Local Artist Response

“Hip Hop is the culture in which I'm given a platform to

communicate truth. The culture that I grew up in, the culture

I'm burdened to reach out to.” – Duoshun Pledgure, Portland,

OR

“Hip-hop is creative, original, real, uncut feelings that an

individual expresses through their life stories. It is not just music

but something greater than that..something that united a

community together when there was nothing else..there was

hip-hop.” Laura Whedon, McMinville, OR

“Hip hop is the vehicle that drives my passion and takes me

where to where I want to go.” Halfa, Portland, OR

Origin

The first people who made this music genre are the African Americans. Keith Cowboy, a rapper with Grandmaster Flash and Furious Five, made the term hip-hop. He was singing the words, “Hip hop hip hop," when he was teasing a friend who had just joined the US Army. The word "rap" created later and was a slang word that mean conversation. In The 1978 when hip hop was first created there were only 3 known hip hop artist: Keith Cowboy, Melly Mel, and Kid Kreo. Recording was not its primary function. It was really about entertaining and throwing parties. There was DJ who would scratch records and MC who would shout chants on the mike that rhyme and the crowd followed along as they danced. Then Hip hop took off when it started recorded and hit the public nationally.

Cultural Influences

The Lyrics of rap come represent real life circumstances. Many of Rap Artist come from low income communities and they speak of the violence, drugs, prostitutions that seems to control their environments.

Also you can find music on political topics and presidential views.

Blacks were suppressed of equality and in the music of the early 90’s and even now, they make it very aware of how they feel and think.

Page 12: Mus 34(final project)

Materialism

In music videos, rappers sport lavish jewelry, top designer clothes, and higher end vehicles. They promote these materials to lower class individuals who cannot afford such expensive items. Indirectly, rappers are boasting of their wealth and shaming their audience’s poverty

Violence

Violence is a major motivator in rap music. The music gives violence a good name. Rappers speak on it as if it is the norm for everyday life. Guns are the most spoken about. Murder is not a topic that is shied away from, but encouraged.

Consequences not informed with the violent lyrics:

1. Death

2. Jail

Page 15: Mus 34(final project)

Hypocrites

These same rappers that speak about violent matters, are in reality family men. They don’t ride around in their high quality cars looking for the next person to kill, but they influence their audience to do so. Instead of preaching morals and lawful action, they despise such things. Consequently, they’re encouraging their audience to commit legal acts, giving up their freedom and spending a great deal of time incarcerated. While incarcerated, their icon is free to do as he pleases, and there will no letter or visit from him.

KRS One and as well as other Hip Hop artist

pay particular attention to the message they

encourage and lyrics that represent them. They

understand that their music is being idolized by

young youths. So they make sure to spread

positive and hopeful ideas. The positive music

they influence is unfortunately not popular,

therefore their music is less heard publicly and

the violent music is heard and distributed well

through out National regions.

Page 20: Mus 34(final project)

Parental Guidence

Parents need to monitor what their children are listening to and children need to seek their parent’s approval of what they are involved in. Entertainment is sucking the ethnics out of children and forcing them to desire an unrealistic life. Rap music is misleading to one who desires a nonviolent and free from incarceration life.

Education

Education is looked down upon in the rap industry. . Most rappers are high school dropouts. They persuade their viewers that education is a waste of time and teachers are only there for a paycheck. Instead, they promote distributing controlled substances for income. It’s said that one can make more than a teacher doing so.

turkeys and food to the families that can't afford to

have nice Thanksgiving dinners, and on Christmas we

go around and give a certain amount of toys to the

less fortunate families that probably wont be able to

shop and afford to trade gifts," Chingy told

In Conclusion

Hip Hop is very valuable to me and apart of my everyday life. I listen to it as I walk to school, get dressed, work and even get ready for football games. Hip has its’ positives and also its negative. But right now in my opinion is more negative than positive. Hip hop should promote more of efficient production versus illusionary life style. A lot of kids want to be rappers and President Obama addresses this….
