(Guilford Town Hall)
• Harvey Smith, former marine biologist and Yale graduate said the animals were given the best possible care.
• Smith said the USDA signs off on the animals used, and signs off on the use of caged animals.
• EX: The Bronx Zoo
• Smith said cats in particular don’t need to move around a lot. He cited the term “catnapping”
• “Catnapping”: Cats sit around all day, kill/eat their prey, and then sleep and/or sit around some more.
• Pagliuco said the animals used looked “mangy”. He said there were several tigers to a cage
• Pagliuco said the tigers were pacing back & forth and looked angry.

• According to PETA, Hawthorn Corp. has a 20-year history of being fined by the USDA.
• They’ve been fined nearly $300,000
• Pagliuco plans to cite Hawthorn’s legal troubles in his petition
(Daniel Hand High School in Madison)
• All parties said previous years only used acrobats
• Pagliuco said he thinks the fair wants to make more money by using circus animals
• Neighboring towns don’t use Hawthorn Corp., circus animals, or charge money to attend
• Like East Haven’s Fall Festival…
• Branford’s Summer Festival…
• Or Clinton’s Blue Fish Festival…
