Michael Jackson: Thriller

‘Thriller’ was the title of Michael Jackson’s sixth studio album. It is said to be the number one music video ever. The album was released on the 30th November 1982 and has sold millions of copies worldwide. And still continues to sell, especially after his sudden death. The song along with his video people regard as one of his signature songs.

We as the audience, see an immediate connection between him and his onscreen girlfriend. There is also an immediate relationship between the lyricsand the visuals as we can see it immediately feels like we are watchingsomething spooky and dark.

This image reinforces what the song is about and again forms therelationship between the visuals, lyrics and music. This image of thegraveyard distinctly makes us connect it to death and therefore we knowsomething spooky is going to happen. It is gradually setting the scene andbuilding it up.

The iconic choreographed dance routine, that has been copied many times.Although this video doesn’t have distinctive intertextual references, therehave been other music videos and films that have used this iconic video. Forexample the Beatfreakz video to Somebody’s Watching Me .

The sounds effects that appear in the song are also emphasised in the musicvideo through the use of mise-en-scene. We actually see the noises beingmade e.g. The sound of the coffin when its being opened.

There lots of close ups throughout the video of Michael Jacksons face and hison screen girlfriend’s, it makes it feel a bit more spooky as it gets across theemotion of both characters.
