Social Groups within our film, The Vengeance.
The interrogator.
Characteristics: Self confident Independent Opinionated
Career strong
We moulded our interrogator around Carrie-Anne Moss from the
'Unthinkable' a female interrogator. Within the film she is known
as 'Special Agent Helen Brody', the leader of an FBI
counter-terrorism team assigned to interrogate. She appears very
self-motivated, smart, opinionated and dominant. This being exactly
what we intended for our interrogator, Detective Inspector
Smith.
The mise en scene used with the film appears very smart and formal,
this being a feature we decided to include in the vengeance as our
interrogator Jenny wears a smart stripped shirt, with neat hair and
minimal, simplistic makeup. This giving her a serious attitude,
undeniably perfect for the interrogation role.
To make our character's intended characteristics come across to the
audience, we followed certain procedures with the mise en scene,
lighting, camera angles and speech to help do so.
To show her dominant side, we did an over the shoulder shot/mid
shot, showing her to be almost in control of the screen whilst
questioning John Mulberry. Minimal lighting was used also, to
maintain the focus on her rather than anything else. Highlighting
the importance of her being and showing good versus evil as John is
left in the dark. Her positioning is very forward and encouraging
as she aims to get the truth out of the suspect.
The victim.
Characteristics:IndependantMotivatedProfesional Vulnerable Feminine
Our victim, Rebecca Jane Foster was intentionally put across as
a helpless soul, who is dominated and murdered by the coniving John
Mulberry.
This idea was inspired from the film Kill Bill, with Uma Thurma
being the helpless victim, who is shot by a mysterious man. In
which we included within our film, through the use of Johns
identity not being shown. Overall influencing the thrilling
atmosphere and making it a mystery encouring the viewer to want to
watch the rest of the film.
We chose to dress her in casual, pretty clothing, covered in
flowers to resemble her gentle and vulnerable nature. She speaks in
a 'stressed' tone, to help build up the tension as the sequence
goes on, creating a sense of danger. To show her vulnerability we
did various ariel/crane shots of her working and walking around,
with the lighting always focused on her as she is one of the main
protagonists. This also making her almost appear inferior, that she
isn't safe and something is about to happen. Encouraging the
audience to watch and become involved in the film, worring for
Rebeccas welbeing.
The villain.
Characteristics:RoothlessSlyStrongDeterminedDominant
Our villain was inspired by three separate thriller films,
Casino Royale, Kill Bill and Flight Plan, in which we moulded
together to create John Mulberry. The dark mysterious outfit was
inpired by casino royale as we felt it helped viewers identify the
villain from the victim easily. The conspiracy within our film was
enouraged through flight plan as we felt it adds a mass of mystery
and unanswered intruiging questions to occur. We then tied this all
together with the use of Kill Bills mystery footsteps and dark
boots as we felt it added suspense to our villain John.
To carry on with the theme of mystery and to give John a dark
menacing image we dressed him in all black, like in Casino Royale,
with his hoodie up to hide his identity. Unlike Kill Bill however,
we chose to give John no speech as it adds to the suspense and
mystery of his actions and character. A high angled shot is used to
show his dominance over Rebecca as he watches her leave her
precious office.
This also shown with his posture and actions as he visciously
pushes all of the pieces of unwanted paper on the floor along with
anything else in his path, showing he is looking for one thing and
one thing only. To enhance the realism of this we used a hand held
camera shot to help build up to the climax of the opening.
Our aim was to make John silent but deadly, he did not speak, he
did not have to, hes being was thrilling enough.
