Text of Media Evaluation

  • 1. For our A2 media product, we had tomake a short film of our choice, wedecide to make a comedy film, which weknew would be a challenge as it can bedifficult to successfully deliver a comedyfilm that both please and amuses theaudience.

2. We decided to watch several different short student films on YouTube and othercomedy films to get inspiration for our idea. This short film here inspired us touse the idea of having one person in an awkward/uncomfortable situationwhich was comical for the audience. We wanted to base the film around anevery day life event, and decided to use public transport as we all travel onthe train daily which gives us first hand experience of being inawkward/uncomfortable situations on the train. We decided to use the moststereotypical annoying people which would make the main character feeluncomfortable as we have all experienced the same thing and feel theaudience would be able to relate to our film for the same reason. Our film ismainly aimed 16-21 year olds as statistically they are more likely to use publictransport on a day to day basis due to college and work so they would be ableto put themselves straight into the main characters position, which is also whywe made our film from the main characters point of view, as its easier for theaudience to put themselves in the characters position as its as if this is whatthey are seeing with their own eyes. 3. With independent research, I decided to research thecodes and conventions of the comedy genre. Themain idea of the comedy genre is to evokelaughter/humour from the audience using differentelements. I found that the comedy genre is made upof different elements, our film uses the SocialComedy element, which is where the environmentand the situation the person is in makes it comical -with our film, the person being stuck in the confinedspace of a train with the most stereotypical annoyingpeople makes the situation itself comical. 4. Another convention of the comedy genre is thatit includes The Gag which is the verbal/visualjokes in the film. Our film doesnt so muchinclude verbal jokes but more visual jokes, seeing as we used the technique known asDual Role where an actor plays more thenone character in the same film this has beenused in famous comedy films such as TheNutty Professor with Eddie Murphy. 5. The two ancillary texts we had to create where a film poster and adouble page spread. I looked at other film posters for comedyfilms and realised they all used a simple layout with brightcolours. I experimented with several ideas and actually decidedto base my film posters layout on the film Trainspottingslayout with the idea of having all the characters lined up andeach character having a pose/emotion which shows theirpersonality, giving the audience an idea of what to expect fromthe film. To produce this, we had a photo shoot of all thecharacters as we thought this would be more effective thenusing screen shots from the film. I also stuck to the comedyposter convention of using bright colours and came up with theslogan We are now approaching madness which is a mix ofsaying what station the train is approaching and the fact thatthe character is about to be driven mad. 6. With my double page spread, I decided to use a screen shot forthe main picture which took up the majority of the page asthe magazine article is an Exclusive behind the scenesinterview, so having a screen shot from the film gives a sneakpreview to the readers. I made the title Quiet Zone in themagazine a similar font to the font used in the film poster sothey could be recognisable to each other. The article wasdifficult to write as all three of us in my group made the filmand directed it together, so I decided to do a Question andAnswer style interview between the interviewer of themagazine and all us three directors. 7. I feel that both the film poster and the double pagespread support my film well by giving the audience abroad idea of what to expect from the film. I feel thatthe film poster is the more successful ancillary text asit would draw the audience in as it makes the filmlook interesting and makes the audience questionwhat it could be about. Where as with the doublepage spread, if readers dont recognise the directorsor film title they are more likely to skip the articleand not pay much attention to it. 8. Audience feedback is one of the most important thingsas the audience brings in the revenue and without theaudience there is no film.Working in a group was an advantage as we gave eachother feed back on our ideas and agreed on whatworked and what didnt. We showed other people toget there opinions on our film as it was being edited.Unfortunately we did not get a chance to get otheraudience feedback as we had trouble filming ourfootage and when editing our film, we found thatmost files where corrupted which cost us a lot oftime! 9. Media technologies where used for my whole project, I hardlyused any paper based work except from when taking downnotes and creating a rough story board. The Mac computerwas the main technology product I used to create my blog andmake my film. I used photo shop when making my film poster using tools such as the lasso tool and cloning stamp. I alsoused photo shop to create the opening title for our film QuietZone by following a tutorial online I found this to be one ofthe most complicated things I had created on photo shop. Iused Indesign to create my films double page spread. This wasthe first time Id ever used this programme and found it veryhelpful when making my double page spread and also found iteasy to use. 10. We used three different cameras for our project. The reason forthis was one camera was used for a photo shoot so we coulduse pictures for our ancillary texts. Then we began filmingwith one camera, but we needed permission from themanager of the train station to film on their trains which wewas only told half way through filming. So once we gotpermission we began filming again, yet this was on a differentcamera due to the camera we was previously using beingunavailable yet we found no difference in the quality of ourfilming, the only problem being was that half of our footagebeing corrupted for an unknown reason, yet this was resolvedby using another programme to convert the files. 11. One of the main programmes I used to edit my film wasFinal Cut Pro. I have used this programme before whencreating a short film Experiment 235 earlier on in theyear, so this helped me and I was able to experimentmore with the programme as I already knew the basics. Iused Tumblr to write my own individual blog and also ourgroup blog. I have my own personal Tumblr and we alsoused it in media last year so I was already accustomedto Tumblr and how it worked. We used the internet tohelp with research for our project such as YouTube, toget ideas by watching other short films, as well asFacebook and Twitter to get audience feedback.
