Love the Way You Lie is a song recorded by American rapper Eminem for his 2010 studio album Recovery. Released on the 10th August 2010. The Music Video was influenced by Rihanna’s and Eminem’s Ex relationships. Produced and composed by Alex da Kid, the music video for "Love the Way You Lie" was Eminem's third to be directed by American filmmaker Joseph Kahn. Eminem record company is Shady Records and Rihanna is Def Jam Recordings.

Relationships between the lyrics and visuals:

The music video is like Rihanna is the female actress within the video and Eminem is the male actor in the video and the lyrics they say is how they feel and the actors are acting it out. The lyrics that are sung really do relate to the music video each action they do matches with the lyrics. For example when Eminem raps “She f***ing hates me” They are fighting and being very aggressive towards each other, to show that she really hates him is by spitting at him in the face which show that she has no respect for him and that he doesn’t mean anything to him. Also when he says “where you going? The man lip sync this and she replies with “I’m leaving you” which is also lip synced this also a lot of grabbing and pulling towards each other. “when its bad its awful, I lay my hands on her I guess I don’t know my own strength” when saying this they are arguing you can see lip movement but don’t know what they are saying, he pins her to the wall and goes to hit her but misses and gets the wall which links in with the lyrics he says because he puts a whole into the wall. “you know when you love somebody so much you can barely breath, have that warm fuzzy feeling, getting chills, you now getting f***ing sick of looking at them” It shows the relationship between the two characters at the

beginning how they were truly in love and now how they have ending up in a abused relationship. “ if she ever tries to leave again I’m going to tie her to the bed and set this house on fire” which is shown in video him pulling her back into the house meaning that if he can’t have her no one can. “Just goanna stand there and watch me burn, but that’s alright because I like the way it hurts. Just goanna stand there and hear me cry but that’s alright because I love the way you lie” showing the house go up in flames with them both kissing each other and both ending up in flames, showing they both cant not be together.

Relationships between music and visuals:

At the beginning of the music video you have Rihanna singing and seeing shots of the narrative having special effects on fire in the palm of the female’s hands. It then has like a sound of a record being taken off the record player and that’s when the rapping kicks in about the abuse. The music is in sync and rhythm to the beat of the song for example the fighting is in beat of the drums. There isn’t that much editing except from going to scene to scene and the effects of the flames and fire.

Music video characteristics genre:

This genre is hip pop so it does have close ups of Eminem and Rihanna But this music video has more of a story line its like a shot film.

Music videos always have Motifs they always want to get a message of across or want to attract there target audience this is often influenced by there record label.

Emphasis on ‘looking’:

I would say that this music video has a male and female gaze by having Rihanna and Eminem both looking directly into the camera as they both sing/rap there lyrics which makes them connect with the audience. In some sort of way there is voyeuristic view of a woman ‘Megan Fox’ who is the actress in the music video, of her legs and face.

Intertexual reference:

This does have intertexual reference by having Rihanna in the music video as well as Eminem this making the audience wider by having two different genres hip pop and pop.

When you hear the song you know straight way the artist by there unique singing style also them both combined together. This Song is telling the story to its audience and you can really imagine it when you listen carefully to the lyrics and when you see the music video it completely connects with the lyrics and shows each lyric step by step. This Music video you could watch again and again without losing interest, the audience believes that this is real by how realistic it is and you can get involved with the music video and relate to it.

This music video has the start imagine which makes people want to look like them which could also be advertising as they are very high in the charts artists are well known its always important that they do have the star imagine.

Technical aspects really do put the music video like camera work, angles, movement, Mis en scene,

editing, sound and special effects. Lighting and colour really do help to set the mood, in this music video they are quite dark, greys and blacks which shows over shadowing, hell as in not a good place, darkness in the relationship and really shows how there relationship is. The Mis en scene looks like a run down place that there not very stable financially.
