Left 4 Dead

Left 4 Dead (abbreviated as L4D) is a cooperative first-person

shooter video game with survival horror elements, developed by

Turtle Rock Studios and Valve Corporation. The game uses

Valve's proprietary Source engine, and is available for Microsoft

Windows, Xbox 360 and Mac OS X. Development on the game

was completed on November 13, 2008, and two versions were

released digitally: A downloadable digital version, released on

November 17, 2008, and a digital retail disc version, with a

release date determined by region. The digital retail disc version

was released in North America and Australia on November 18,

2008; and in Europe and Japan on November 21, 2008.

Set during the aftermath of an apocalyptic pandemic, the game

pits its four protagonists—dubbed the “Survivors”—against

hordes of the infected. There are four game modes: a single-

player mode in which allied characters are controlled by AI; a

four-player, co-op campaign mode; an eight-player online versus

mode; and a four-player survival mode. In all modes, an artificial

intelligence (AI), dubbed the “Director”, controls level pacing

and item placements, in an attempt to create a dynamic experience

and increase replay value.

Left 4 Dead was well received by the industry media upon its

release, with praise given for its replay value, focus on

cooperative play, and movie-like experience. Several criticisms

were aimed at limited level selection and the lack of a narrative.

The game has won several publication awards, as well as

distinctions from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences and

British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Introduction

Pennsylvania suffers an outbreak of “Green Flu”; a highly

contagious virus causing extreme aggression, mutation to the

body cells, and loss of higher brain functions. Two weeks after

the first infection four immune survivors—William “Bill”

Overbeck, a Vietnam veteran; Zoey, a college student; Louis, an

IT analyst, and Francis, an outlaw biker—make their way through

the city of Fairfield, only to discover that the virus is creating

more dangerous mutations. After narrowly avoiding these new

infected, along with hordes of others, the survivors are alerted to

the presence of an evacuation point at the nearby Mercy Hospital

roof by a passing helicopter.

Chapter 1

The Apartment

Chopper Pilot: To anyone who can hear this, proceed to Mercy

Hospital for Evacuation. Repeat, proceed to Mercy Hospital for

Evacuation.

“We can take the subway tunnels to the hospital. There's a redline

station not far from here.” Bill informed grabbing a first aid kit

and a machine gun off the table.

“Subways.” Francis muttered annoyed.

“What's wrong with subways Francis?” Zoey asked.

“I hate subways.” Francis complained.

“Better start moving if we wanna get to the Hospital” Bill

declared reloading his gun and started towards the roof door.

“Good thinking” Zoey agreed and fell behind him. The survivors

opened the door of the rooftop to make their way downstairs into

a kitchen and through the living room shooting any infected on

sight. They searched the bedrooms and bathrooms for aids such

as pain killer pills, and new weapons. Suddenly a guy with a long

tongue known as the “Smoker” silently appeared in front of Bill.

“SMOKER!” Francis yelped sharply. Without hesitating Bill shot

at the smoker repeatedly until he exploded. Thick gassy smoke

enveloped the air and they were all coughing and gaging.

“Is that even safe to inhale?” Louis asked, covering his nose and

mouth so as to not inhale anymore smoke. Zoey shrugged and

followed Bill and Francis downstairs into the hallway. They made

their way towards the last floor by mazing through large gaping

holes and carefully made their way around most of the sealed up

doors and hallways where infectants were waiting in almost every

existing hallways and rooms! As soon as Bill hit the last floor by

leaping through a huge hole in the previous floor, there was a low,

frightening growl.

“There's a Hunter someplace around here.” Francis whispered

reloading his gun and crouching carefully as not to get jumped by

the Hunter. Suddenly a blood curling shirk escaped the Hunter's

lips as he jumped after his target which was Bill who had

momentarily turned his back.

“Watch your ass!” Francis shouted as he rushed forward to punch

the Hunter away and dove bullets into the Hunter’s skull as he fell

back confused and with a deafening cry, the Hunter sunk lifeless

to the floor. The Hunter had pale green skin, his arms and legs

had been duct taped and his hood covered his snarled face. They

made their way around a room and into the hall where the exit

sign shone bright green at the top of an exit door on the other side

of the hall of infecteds. Louis, who was quiet and usually fell back

throughout the entire maze run adventure pointed his shot gun in

the middle of the relaxed unaware horde and with two shots

cleared the hallway.

“Whoe!” Zoey exclaimed surprised, “Didn't know you had it in

you Louis.”

“Well...” The IT Analyst blushed scratching his head.

The survivors made their way through an alley knocking down

infectants and shooting them carefully trying not to hit any cars

to cause an alarm.

“Station's just up the street!” Bill hollered as they got out of the

alley into the main street.

“This way.” He repeated making his way around a fallen truck

with Louis, Zoey and Francis following behind.

“Double my fun” Francis whispered as he picked up an extra

pistol from a fallen cop.

“Grabbing an extra pistol.” Zoey informed as she picked a pistol

out of an abandoned car.

“There's the station!” Bill shouted as he got to a small fight of

stairs not mistaking the safe house sign and arrow pointing

downstairs to where the safe room must be located and arrived at

the safe room first.

“For chrissake people, get in here!” Bill exclaimed annoyed as he

held the safe room door open noticing the others carefully making

their way through rubbles of bricks and stones caused by a

crashed car doing their best not to topple over them and fall. He

had enough super zombie fighting for the night and wanted

nothing more than to rest.

He slammed the door behind Francis who was the last to enter the

room.

We're Safe... For now

Chapter 2

The Subway

In the safe room had fresh supplies of water, food, first aid

supplies, weapons and ammunition. Louis glanced at a toilet that

was filled with thesis and flies and gaged.

“I think I'll take my chances and shit outside instead.” Francis

laughed eyeballing the toilet.

A large writing showed dimly under the safe room light on the

wall “None of you will survive” he read and scoffed.

“Do you think we WILL survive” Zoey whispered to Bill

discouraged by the writing on the wall and reading the others that

accompanied it.

“Don't mind the writing. Some people just don't have faith in

themselves and have no right to discourage others when it comes

to their lives,” Bill disagreed “Ignore the walls from now on

unless their information is useful.”

“But what if-” Zoey started.

“Don't let it discourage you! You all will survive and keep that in

mind. If you want to live you will live. If you give up now you

will surely die and all you have worked for will be in vein. So

either you fight and live or you give up and die but keep your

negativity away from the rest of us.” Bill replied harshly. “It's

bad enough we have one contagious infection slowly turning this

world into hell.” And he walked away leaving Zoey with her

thoughts.

“That's a bit harsh Bill, don't you think?” Louis whispered to Bill

as he peered outside the exit door of the safe room.

“She needs to learn to take some harsh lessons in order to survive

especially in this situation. This is the real world not one of her

college exam” Bill replied calmly.

“I agree with the old man, she needs to be toughened up. We don't

have time for this “between life and death” bullshit.” Francis

declared joining the conversation. “Everyone wants to live even

if they have to die fighting”

“You guys ready?” Zoey asked cocking her pistols with a look of

newly founded determination on her face.

“Yup!” Francis yawned.

“You got it” Louis solemn.

“Let’s do this” Bill replied.

Bill opened the exit door and stealth outside almost falling into a

floorless room. There was barely a concrete ledge where he was

standing and half of the lower floor was on fire where rock

rubbles and blocks were everywhere!

The survivors cleared the path of infected before jumping onto

the rubbles and made their way downstairs into the subway

station.

“Reloading!” Louis informed fighting to replenish his

ammunition.

“Look out!” Francis shouted shooting at a couple of infectants

that were hurling at Louis from both sides.

“Red Line North will take us straight there.” Bill announced as

they entered into the reception area where they found extra

ammunitions and weapons. Bill grabbed a shotgun, a bottle of

pain pills on the floor and one of the pipe bombs.

“Someone's gonna need these.” Bill muttered fitting the pills into

his side pocket.

“Grabbing Pills.” Louis muttered fondly as he picked up a bottle

of painkillers he found next to the desk of guns.

Suddenly there was a low gurgle somewhere in the room. No time

to find out who it belonged to. The survivors made their way

upstairs into the Holly Street Station where the sign “Red Line S”

hung next to a broken down, battered train. They fought through

the horde and hurried through the train still shooting like there

was no tomorrow. Ironic isn't it?

Again the same sound of low gurgling reached their ears but this

time closer and a Boomer fell behind the survivors attempting to

vomit on them. Its huge exposed belly jiggled under its tight shirt

as its stubby legs does it’s best to move its wobbling body. It

gurgled and groaned often because of excessive vomit in its

throat. Suddenly a loud burst echoed in the train.

“Got 'em!” Zoey whooped.

“Oh, HELL yes.” Louis yipped.

Bill shook his head relieved and kept moving. They reached the

next train and jumped onto a platform that was half filled with fire

and rocks where the sign “Red Line N” hung next to the train.

Suddenly a loud Yell boomed throughout the station.

“TANK!” Bill shouted. Louis heart sank, Zoey felt the hair on her

neck stood up and Francis tensed awaiting the worse. The Tank

was huge! Its muscles flexed and throbbed with every movement,

its tongue hung out because of its broken lower jaw and swung

from side to side with every movement, its tough skin was

purplish pink and it moved like an actual gorilla. The only thing

it wore was a pair pants. The Tank made an attack huff and

punched at poor Louis sending him hurling across the station. Bill

ran backwards to get a good aim at the Tank and shot

continuously with his shotgun at its head. Zoey moved forward

and shot at the Tank desperately with her pistols. Francis was

trapped but repeatedly punched the Tank until it hit him to the

floor again.

“Tank!” Zoey Screamed

“T-Tank!” Louis Yelped dazed.

“Tank.” Francis shouted.

The Tank picked up a rubble out of the concrete floor and threw

it at Zoey who dogged it by jumping in front of the second train.

It yelled again and the survivors kept shooting at it.

“Reloading!” Louis cried refilling his ammo.

“Don't stop shooting!” Bill shouted as the Tank grabbed him and

slammed him onto the floor causing him to be half unconscious

and half dazed. Ignoring the sore pain in his back and blurred

vision, Bill kept shooting at the Tanks head.

A few Infectants interfered with the fight by hitting Bill in his sore

back and he lost his aim. The last bullet he shot grazed Francis

shoulder.

“Watch where the hell you're shooting!” Francis shouted with

annoyance and pain.

“Watch out!” Louis screamed shooting the Tank that was aiming

to attack the momentarily distracted Francis.

Infectants poured into the room making it more difficult for the

survivors but the Tank was eventually brought down and it yelled

loudly as it fell with a “thud!” onto the train tracks dead.

Limping, Bill joined his team mates. “Everyone's alright?” He

asked holding his back.

“We should be asking you.” Zoey replied helping him sit on the

pavement to rest.

“You look horrible Bill, you need to heal up.” Louis advised

shaking stones from his shoe.

“I don't need that.” Bill replied stubbornly and stood up to assure

his team that he was fine. The survivors continued their journey

through the station after a few minutes of rest.

“Ammo here!” Bill announced grabbing a handful of ammunition

and kept walking. Zoey, Louis and Francis followed closely

behind more careful than before and kept a worried eye on Bill

who was now breathing heavily from the pain of his wounds. The

survivors made their way through the last train and found a door

with steps leading upstairs into a building.

The sound of a Boomer gurgling made the survivors stiffen in fear

but did not stop.

“Ready for this?” Louis whispered. The others nodded trying not

to make any sound to alert wandering infectants.

The survivors made their way upstairs into a room where the

Boomer jumped into the glass window startling the survivors.

“BOOMER!” Bill yelped and shot the Boomer with his shotgun.

It exploded leaving a mess of blood and vomit on the floor and

the lower half of its body hung through the window.

Bill moved through the window of blood and gore when

suddenly, another Boomer ambushed them from behind. Francis

punched it back making it topple over and fall backwards from its

extensive and shot it in the stomach causing the Boomer to

explode.

“Well that's one too many Boomers, how many of these do we

have to face?” Louis sighed worried.

Ignoring Louis, Bill half ran half limped to a switch that opens an

emergency door behind it and turned it on. A loud alarm alerted a

horde and the survivors had to defend themselves while the door

slowly cracked open.

“Let’s do this!” Louis shouted

“INCOMMING!” Bill hollered as he cocked his gun with rage

and got ready to cover Zoey and Francis who took in front to fend

off the horde.

Bill through the pipe bomb across the room and the first wave of

infectants ran after it, kicking at the pipe bomb as it counted down

with each high pitch beep and with a sudden acceleration in the

beeping the pipe bomb exploded and parts rained on the

survivors. “That's just disgusting” Zoey complained.

“Suck it up and be a man” Francis laughed as he randomly shot

after infectants as they attempted to get past them to attack the

injured veteran.

Zoey shot Francis a nasty look and ignored him but inside, she

knew what he meant. Getting up she helped the guys fend off the

infectants just enough time for the door to open halfway. As soon

as Louis made it through the door a loud raspy cry followed by a

dry cough came across the room and through the horde, a long

tongue grabbed Francis and began pulling him towards the raging

horde, each infectant punching and biting at him as he was

dragged further in.

“No, NO, NOOOOOOOO!!!” Francis screamed losing his gun

and fighting to free himself from the tight grip of the tongue. Zoey

shot at the tongue releasing the biker and guided him back to the

doors which they slipped through and ran upstairs except for Bill

who, with Louis help, limped upstairs.

“Bill, man heal up.” Francis demanded Bill as he slowed down in

pace due to his injuries.

As soon as the survivors reached the balcony of the top stairs, a

soft moan echoed across the balcony. “Shhh, I hear a Witch.”

Zoey informed

“Kill the lights man.” Louis whispered as they carefully walked

into a quiet room where an ammo pile laid on a table. Zoey and

Francis grabbed some ammo and Bill took a pain killer. The

survivors made their way downstairs as the unseen Witch moaned

miserably.

The halls, stairs and lower floor were clear of infectants. The

survivors gradually picked up their pace and ran towards the door

making sure there were no infectants outside to surprise them.

“Weapons over here!” Bill announced as he grabbed a second

pistol off a table and placed it under his shirt. A smoker ran across

the street where the moaning of a witch drew closer.

Suddenly the sound of a Helicopter hovered over the building.

“To anyone who can hear this, proceed to Mercy Hospital for

Evacuation. Repeat, proceed to Mercy Hospital for Evacuation.”

The Chopper Pilot echoed,

“Hey, take this.” Zoey whispered as she passed a bottle of pills to

Bill who was now slowing down once again due to the pain of his

injuries. Bill gradually took a few pills and Zoey grabbed a bottle

of pills she found on the counter.

The raspy shirk of the smoker grew louder as he spotted the

survivors within the room and he attempted to attack from outside

but his tongue hit the glass and failed. It tried to relocate but bad

luck struck when Francis caught sight of it and shot it clear

through the head. The smoker exploded in a gassy cloud and its

body flew across the street from the force of the machine gun.

“Popped a cap in his ass!” Francis whooped and placed the gun

over his shoulders with pride.

“Nice shot.” Bill chuckled impressed.

“Who said those “Special Infected” were so special?” Francis

replied boastfully. “I can kick their ass with my eyes closed.”

“That's not what you said earlier Mr No No No!” Zoey teased

making Louis chuckle with glee.

“Let's keep moving.” Bill commanded and they made their way

through the dark streets.

“Safe house ahead!” Bill announced as they neared the Pawn

shop. Awaiting hordes attacked them on their way to the pawn

shop. As Louis was shooting an infectant next to a police car and

the car alarm chirped.

“Don't shoot them or you will accidently hit the cars and set off

the alarm” Bill warned. “Just punch or shoved them away and get

your ass into the safe room in shop!” Bill worked his way into the

pawn shop shoving infectants away from him and smashed the

head of those who were trying to get up with the back of his gun.

“Look out!” Zoey shouted as a few infectants attacked Bill from

behind on his way to the safe room. Bill shoved a few of them

away from him but he was too weak. Suddenly there was a

gunshot and the infectants around Bill flew across the room from

the force of the bullets allowing Bill to hobble over to the safe

room.

“Hurry up old man.” Francis urged as Bill entered the safe room.

“Get in here!” Bill shouted at Zoey impatiently as she shove a

gnarling infectant away from her and Francis slammed the door

behind her.

“You did good.” Bill cooed and he sunk to the floor of the safe

room.

We're safe... for now

Chapter 3

The Sewer

“Go ahead and take this.” Louis urged giving Bill a bottle of pain

pills. “Maybe you oughta heal up.” he advised with greater

concern for Bill's wounds. It has been 13 hours since the survivors

have been huddled up in the safe room awaiting Bill's recovery

and even if it has been just a few days his wounds were still far

from completely healed.

“Give him first aid.” Zoey ordered Louis.

“I'm fine, I don't need first aid” Bill objected stubbornly.

“I know we gotta move but you gotta heal up.” Zoey denied his

objection. Bill sunk back down to the floor allowing Louis and

Zoey to clean his wounds and use the first aid kit to patch him up.

When Bill had completely healed from the wounds he received

with the run in he had with the Tank at the station, the survivors

picked up fresh supplies from the safe room and continued their

journey to Mercy Hospital.

Bill was the first one to leave the safe room, into the dark alley of

wandering infectants. He walked but moved quickly through the

rushing horde into the kitchen of an abandoned restaurant.

“Should be a way up ahead.” Bill declared moving from the

kitchen to the front of the restaurant. Infectants were everywhere;

laying or sitting on the floor, wandering around the rooms and

even more outside. They rushed towards them as if thirsty for

blood having them to fight for their lives.

“Look!” Louis shouted pointing at the sign “Mercy Hospital” that

can be seen glowing bright green from the distance that they

stood. “Looks like we're almost there.” He was excited and rushed

ahead to help clear the path to get out of this nightmarish realm.

They made it outside into a gas station where Francis accidently

shot a propane Tank in which it's explosion set off the Gas pumps

that exploded and the entire gas station came baring down on

some of the infectants. When the coast was clear, Bill lead the

way to the lift next to the building roof.

“Get on the lift!” Bill barked hastily.

“Hurry!” Louis cried following him to the lift.

“Reloading!” Zoey informed.

“Heads up!” Francis shouted shooting an infectant that was

hurtling at Zoey when it saw her lowered guard.

“Be ready to fight the horde.” Louis muttered to Bill. “This lift's

gonna be noisy whence you start it.” Breathing deeply, Bill waited

for Zoey and Francis to get on board and started the lift.

Almost immediately after the lift was started, horde of infectants

came baring down on the survivors with great force.

“Watch it, Watch it!” Bill cried shoving infectants off the rising

lift. As soon as the lift reached the roof, the survivors ran across

the roof, balanced on the pipe next to the storage room and broke

the glass.

Boxes stood on iron bar shelves with one lit florescent bulb

overlooking a gaping hole in the floor at the left corner of the

room. Bill, followed by Francis, Louis and Zoey, climbed into the

storage room and ran towards the hole. As they reached the hole,

infectants tried to climb out to attack. Bill shoot at them from

above but suddenly slipped off the edge of the hole and fell

through and landed on his feet on the second floor. He shoved

infectants that were awaiting him like candy on a stick.

“Bill!” Zoey screamed when she saw him fell through the hole.

“I'm fine Zoey just get yourselves down here.” Bill ordered

clearing the room of infectants with his shotgun. The survivors

collected themselves and fought through the horde in the hallway

until they arrived downstairs. Bill was the first one into a large

warehouse room when he heard a Tank spine tingling yelled. The

survivors felt the Tank's ground shook as it charged towards them.

The Tank yelled in pain as Bill shot at its face and took out one

of its eyes a few meters away.

“Tank!” Bill shouted.

“Tank!” Zoey screamed. A Hunter growled somewhere on one of

the storage isles as the Tank charged after Bill. Bill circled with

the Tank shooting it repeatedly in hopes that he will kill it before

it catches up to him.

“This way!” Zoey shouted to the others leading them to the Tank.

The Tank chased Bill until he tripped over a small stone which

gave the Tank enough time to punch him into a wall leaving him

dazed from hitting his back and head. Zoey, Francis and Louis

caught up and repeatedly dove bullets into the Tank who lost

interest in the vulnerable Bill and ran towards the nearest person,

Louis. Bill collected himself and led the Tank away by annoying

it with bullets in its back having it to chase after him once more.

“I'm coming to help you Bill!” Louis shouted getting between the

Tank and Bill but a Hunter suddenly leaped onto him, knocking

him over and pinning him to the floor.

“Get him off me!” Louis screamed. The Tank swatted the Hunter

and Louis from its path instantly killing the Hunter but leaving

Louis dizzy and weak from a harsh impact with the nearest wall.

Francis protected Louis from further attacks and Zoey used her

pistols to distract the Tank. Bill emptied his shotgun into the Tank

who slowly died and sunk to the floor, lifeless.

“Share the wealth, brother.” Francis muttered as he gave Louis

pain pills and guided him to where Bill and Zoey were. They

found an exit door close by and the survivors entered into a

hallway.

“This way.” Bill guided moving into a darker hallway with

broken pipes and started a few flights of stairs which lead into a

manhole. A decaying body laid in a pull of blood greeted the

survivors at the foot of the steps and they hopped over it into the

manhole area.

“Here, I got something for you.” Louis told Bill and handed him

a bottle of pain pills. “Wait up while I heal guys.” he continued

and pulled out a first aid kit.

The manhole was filled with large white, horizontal, cylinder

septic Tanks which connected to each other with large, thick

pipes. They were the size of the Tank that sits at the back of a

sewer truck. Bill counted approximately 8 on both sides. They sat

neatly organized and respectfully measured away from each

other. The ground was solid concrete and there was a manhole

cover that sat at the back of the room in the middle of the isle of

Tanks.

“I think I hear a Witch.” Zoey whispered out loud. Everyone else

stopped to listen and to their horror a sorrowful moan echoed

through the manhole.

“Turn it off.” she warned and everyone turned off their

flashlights.

Bill moved steadily but carefully, checking each side of the large

barrels of the manhole making sure he doesn't run into the witch

and carefully uncovers the manhole.

“In the sewers we go.” Bill muttered and jumped onto a thick

clump of horizontal pipes meters away from the sewage water.

The survivors were welcomed by a blast of sewage stench which

they had a hard time getting use to.

“Let's hurry up so I can get out of here.” Francis complained

moving forward, “I hate sewers.”

Before they could jump off unto solid ground Louis gasped

loudly.

“W-W-W-Wi” Louis stammered not finding the words.

“What is it Louis?” Bill groaned impatiently.

“Witch!” Zoey hissed pointing at a glowing figure in the dark

corner of the sewage. As their eyes adjusted, the survivors made

out a woman whose skin was pale white sitting by herself

moaning and weeping on the sewer bank. She was extremely

skinny, her nails were about a foot long and her clothes were torn.

Her eyes were as red as blood and glowed brightly in the dark.

She was a horrid sight but she was more dangerous than she

looked and the survivors had no desire to get on her bad side. If

there is a worse side than she was now.

“Go the opposite way, she's not in our path.” Bill whispered

relieved. The survivors jumped off the pipes and turned the corner

opposite the witch who took no notice of them and they ran into

a small horde of wandering infectants. A smoker cried out with a

raspy scream when its watery swollen eyes met Bill’s.

“SMOKER!” Bill shouted. Acting quickly, Bill killed the Smoker

before he had a chance to swing his tongue at him and coughing

and blinded by the smoke, the survivors fought through the now

alerted horde. Bill noticed a pipe bomb on the ground.

“I'd rather have a grenade, but this'll do.” Bill muttered unsatisfied

while grabbing the pipe bomb.

As soon as the survivors turned a corner, Bill through the pipe

bomb into another horde. “Fire in the Hole!” he shouted.

“Carrefulll.” Francis warned as a Hunter growled nearby. The

Hunter leaped on to its target and pinned its victim to the floor.

“Hunter on Louis!” Francis shouted punching the Hunter off and

killing it instantly with a shotgun. The pipe bomb exploded

leaving a temporary pathway which was just enough time for the

survivors to escape into a hidden room nearby.

The survivors entered the room where Francis closed the door

behind them. The room was small and had trash all over the floor

and ammo sat in the middle of the room. After resting and

replenishing their ammunition Louis noticed Bill's wounds were

still bleeding and heavier this time.

“Hey Bill, might be a good time to patch yourself up.” he warned.

“That's a crock of shit.” Bill replied rudely and picked up a pipe

bomb on a small cylinder barrel and left the Molotov behind.

“Molotov?” he suggested to the others changing the subject.

Louis rolled his eyes and followed Bill through a small opening

through the room. Zoey and Francis who were on the lookout for

intruders set off behind them and the survivors crawled through

the small sewage tunnel where every step was a sickening “plop”.

“Need to find manhole.” Bill declared as they cleared the tunnel

into another part of the sewer.

Suddenly a Boomer gurgled and growled when it saw the

survivors aimed towards them.

“Boomer!” Zoey warned. “Watch out!”

The sight of the manhole caught Bill’s attention he left the others

to take care of the Boomer. He climbed up the ladder allowing the

others to follow. Francis who successfully killed the Boomer

climbed up after Bill followed by Zoey and Louis. As soon as Bill

reached the top of the manhole a Hunter growled menacingly and

a horde came running towards him as if they were waiting to

ambush. Bill backed up and half shoved, half shot every infectant

that came his way. When Louis came out of the manhole after

Zoey the Hunter pinned him to the ground.

“Not again! Help!” Louis screamed.

“HUNTER!” Zoey yelled.

“Hunter's got Louis!.... again” Francis hollered.

The horde came down on the survivors like a hungry pack of

wolves.

“Watch Out!” Zoey warned but it was too late. The smoker which

was patiently awaiting behind a police car grabbed Bill with its

tongue and pulled him towards it.

“No, No, NO, NOOOOOOO!!!” Bill screamed in terror as he

kicked and pulled at the slimy tongue that held him captive.Zoey

tried to rescue Bill but she and Francis were held back by the

horde. Louis, who was able to escape the hunter, jumped over a

car and kicked the infectants that were on their way to helping the

Smoker finish off Bill from behind and killed the Smoker with his

rifle.

Bill noticed a safe room sign on the Hospital and limped towards

it.

“To the Hospital!” Bill yelled without stopping. He made his way

around the reception desk and into the safe room where the others,

who were not far behind, joined him.”

With a loud slam of the safe room door, Bill let out a dry, raspy

laugh of relief.

We're Safe... for now.

Chapter 4

The Hospital

Bill patched himself up with his first aid kit and grabbed the extra

one on the table. This safe room was a small modern day kitchen

with one television, a stove, a microwave, a table filled with

ammo and four walls filled with complaints.

“What? No cable?” Francis complained slamming the television

on its top with his clenched fists.

“Someone's gonna need these.” Zoey muttered grabbing pain

pills. Louis shot at impatient infectants who tried to reach them in

vein through the upper bars of the red steel exit door. Bill opened

the door slightly and checked the hallways. The Infection had

spread to people within the hospital as well and everyone were

wandering about unaware of their presence.

“I'm guessing we're finally at Mercy Hospital, huh Bill?” Louis

asked.

“I Hate Hospitals.” Francis complained glum.

“Right you are Louis.” Bill confirmed. “Right now we have to

find our way to the roof.”

“Then what are we waiting for? Let's get moving.” Zoey declared

keeping a low voice. The survivors left the safety of the safe room

and entered into the halls making their way through exit doors to

the stairs.

“Up the stairs.” Bill ordered pointing at a short flight of stars that

lead into another hallway and continued through the reception

area into another hallway of offices.

“I ain't walking to the roof.” Bill complained.

“Stairs are a good workout.” Louis flattered

“Let's find the elevator.” Bill objected.

Their conversation was cut short by the low growl of a Hunter

followed by a smoker's dry cough. Francis ran forward and

carefully peered through the door.

“Smoker!” Francis screamed and smoker grabbed him almost

immediately after he yelled but he was able to escape from its

grasp by shooting it repeatedly in the head with his shotgun and

killing it. At the same time the Hunter jumped over his head after

Bill who quickly punched it back and shot it repeatedly in the

chest until it screamed in pain and fell to the floor dead.

Suddenly a familiar moan echoed through the hallways and the

further the survivors moved the louder the moan. Without

warning the moan became a growl. The survivors prepared

themselves assuming it was another Hunter but then the familiar

figure of a pale skin woman with red glowing eyes, extremely

long finger nails, torn clothes was staring right at them, growling

a warning growl showing a jaw full of sharp teeth that can put

piranhas to. The Survivors were invading her personal space.

“Witch!” Francis hissed and she was in the only path they had to

make it to the elevator. The survivors backed away from the

Witch quickly and waited for her to calm down. Gradually the

Witch groaned softy and went back to moaning miserably.

“Now what do we do?” Louis moaned miserably. “She's in our

way, how are we gonna make it out there without disturbing her?”

Francis who was losing patience attempted to sneak around the

witch but she caught sight of him and began to groan loudly.

“Wow talk about teenagers who want “personal space”.” He

muttered backing away.

“There's gonna be hell to pay if you keep aggravating that Witch.”

Bill warned. Francis moved to where Bill was standing feeling

beaten.

“So what do we do now pops?” Francis asked shrugging his

shoulders in dismay. When Bill opened his mouth to reply an ear

piercing scream made his blood run cold. Louis had startled the

Witch!

“Dammit Louis!” Bill yelled and the survivors pulled out their

guns and shot like mad people as the witch dashed forward. The

witch screamed in pain and raged after Louis. Bill tried to stop

her by shoving her away but she shoved him so hard he flew back

and toppled into Zoey and they both fell to the floor as the witch

fixated her attack on Louis.

Her long nails scratched the wall as she was ready to attack and

with one swoosh, she slashed her nails into Louis chest.

“I'm down!” Louis screamed as he fell onto his back in sever pain

and protected his chest with his right arm as the witch repeatedly

shredded his skin while slashing at him with her long tough nails.

Francis emptied his shotgun on the Witch and was now reloading.

“Help!” Louis screamed as blood flew left and right. Bill and

Zoey got to their feet to help bring the Witch down. With a loud

agonizing cry, the witch flew her arms into the air and sank to the

floor dying while the survivors who were not going to take any

chances to leave her for death finished her off until she was no

longer breathing.

“How ya doing?” Francis asked helping Louis up.

“How bad are you?” Zoey asked concerned.

“I'll live.” Louis replied. Blood gushed from his arms and oozed

from chest but no fatal wounds were inflicted.

“Up we go.” Francis cooed as he allowed Louis to balance on his

feet.

“Thanks a lot.” Louis thanked and the survivors hid in a room to

check their ammo and Louis to patch himself up and used pain

pills to numb the pain of his wounds.

“Let's get to the safe room so that we can re-cooperate” Bill

suggested as Louis started moving about freely. Not long after the

survivors found the elevator. Louis stood at the right side of the

elevator, Francis and Zoey kept an eye out for an attack and Bill

called the elevator. The elevator made a loud noise which

attracted the horde.

“Here they come!” Louis announced and the survivors fend off as

many infectants as they could awaiting the elevator. Both walls

on either side were bashed outwards and infectants poured into

the hallway fighting hungrily at the survivors. A Hunter from the

back of the horde leaped forward and pinned Bill to the floor.

“Bill!” Zoey screamed and shot the Hunter off Bill. Bill got to his

feet while Zoey protected him with her pistols and Francis took

over the right side while Louis covered him and Zoey from the

back. It went on for at least 30 minutes before the elevator came

with an innocent “ting!”

“Get into the Elevator!” Bill commanded and the survivors threw

themselves into the elevator and Zoey hit the “close door” button

when everyone was safely inside.

“I hate elevators.” Francis complained with a miserable look on

his face.

“Francis if you keep your mouth shut and your eyes open, you

will aim better.” Bill replied annoyed. After a few minutes Bill

sighed miserably.

“Even bein' in a war doesn't prepare you for this. They never stop.

They come at you and come at you and they NEVER damn

STOP.”

“Game over, man! Game over!” Zoey laughed trying to cheer Bill

up.

“What the hell was that?” Bill gasped confused. Zoey and Louis

laughed at his reaction and Bill shook his head annoyed.

The Elevator doors opened on the 28th floor which was near the

roof.

“Now to the roof!” Bill declared thoughtfully as the survivors left

the elevator and started around the maze of boxes and steel bars

on the floor. Suddenly a smoker grabbed Zoey from behind.

“SMOKER!” Francis shouted shooting at the smoker. The

smoker dogged Francis and attempted to pull Zoey off the edge

of the roof attempting to kill her with a high fall. Francis turned

his gun onto the smokers tongue and shot at it until it broke and

the smoker ran away with a broken tongue.

“You ok?” Francis asked untying the shaken college student.

“I-I'm fine.” She smiled wearily “A bit shaken up but I'll live” and

they met up with Bill and Louis who were clearing the pathway.

“We saw a safe room sign around here!” Louis exclaimed as Zoey

and Francis came into earshot of him. “Help us clear the way so

we can find it!”

Immediately after Louis finished, a Tank growl lurked softly but

clearly through the squealing and shirking of infectants. The

survivors quickly cleared out the infectants before taking any step

forward and prepared themselves. This was not going to be easy

especially since the Tank can easily throw them off the roof and

send them plummeting to their death.

A Boomer that was carefully camouflaging itself with any box or

dark corner, came forward and attempted to vomit on the

survivors.

“Watch your ass!” Francis shouted and he shot the Boomer who

exploded and fell off the roof but some of the vomit splashed on

Zoey.

“Woops, sorry bout’ that.” Francis apologized scratching his head

out of embarrassment. Zoey shot him an annoyed look but said

nothing and shook as much vomit as she could off her clothes

until the smell died out.

“There's the safe room!” Bill whooped and ran forward assuming

that they can escape the Tank but to his demise the Tank ran out

of the safe room and sent a blind punch after Bill who lucky

dogged!

“Tank!” Bill yelped

“Tank!” Louis cackled.

“Tank!” Zoey squealed.

“Head's up!” Francis yelled.

The Tank cornered Bill and punched him against the wall. The

others stood behind the Tank and dove pullets into his back.

Hollering at it to leave Bill alone except for Francis who yelled

“go to hell you asshole!”

The Tank ignored them and punched at Bill again. Bill, who was

now wounded, limped quickly into a closet and the Tank

followed. He shot at a nearby kerosene bottle and he and the Tank

lit on fire. The Tank screamed in pain and Bill felt his clothes

began to burn. He cried out in pain as the flame enveloped his

body.

“Ahhhh, I'm down!” Bill screamed in terror and excruciating

pain. “Need some help over here!” he continued in terror. The

Tank ran out of the room and died with its body still on fire as

Bill decided to use the last moment of his life which flashed

before him to make peace with his maker before joining him.

Suddenly a hand grabbed him and he heard someone winced in

pain from the burning flames.

“Save yourself! Forget about me!” He cried.

“Not today old man.” The voice replied with a short chuckle.

“No leave me behind!” Bill begged.

“Come on, Come on! Get up!” A voice shouted ignoring his plea

and the hand pulled him out of the fire where cold water was

splashed onto his body immediately after.

“Oh my Gosh! Will he be ok?” Another voice cried worried. Bill

felt a finger touched his neck and someone's head laid on his chest

for a few seconds.

“He'll live.” Another voice replied. Bill opened his eyes and

noticed his friends kneeling besides him.

“That's one I owe you.” Bill smiled weakly.

“You're lucky old man, the fire didn't have time burn your skin.

Just turned you red a bit but nothing permanent.” Francis laughed.

He picked Bill up and assisted him as he hobbled towards the safe

room which waited at the end of the hallway of steel bars and

boxes.

“We could get to the roof through here.” Bill declared as Zoey

slammed the safe room door behind her.

We're safe... for now.

Chapter 5

Rooftop Finale

“Well, this is it.” Louis declared calmly “I bet the helicopter pilot

would be happy to see us.”

“Mercy Hospital, respond if you are there.” The radio could be

heard all the way from the safe room. When the survivors had

rested and renewed their ammo and first aid supplies, they opened

the safe room door onto the stairs and cleared through the long

dimly lit hallway. They found themselves in a room where the

elevator door was missing, and so was the elevator, where all that

was left was plain darkness.

“We can get to the roof from there.” Bill suggested nodding his

gun in the direction of a small ventilation path on the right to

where the elevator use to be. Louis carefully made his way to the

vent door and was quickly ambushed by a smoker that stood on

the other side. The smoker used its long, slimy tongue to grab

Louis and pulled him into the elevator hole.

“Louis!” Zoey cried and ran over to aid him but a Hunter, as if to

defend the smoker, leaped onto Zoey and pinned her to the floor.

Francis immediately shot the Hunter off Zoey and it fell into the

darkness followed by the smoker a few seconds after a headshot

from Bill.

“Don’t forget me guys.” Louis whimpered dangling dangerously

over thick, unknown darkness for dear life.

“There’s the landing pad.” Bill informed as the survivors got to

the roof. “Let’s find the radio”. The rooftop looked like a carrier

area for medical and other hospital supplies. Small storehouses

stood on the roof where the radio shaft stood as the only lit place

on the rooftop. They all had ladders built on their sides. The

survivors hopped onto a small ladder that served as a bridge to the

half smashed landing pad and ran down the stretch and into the

shaft.

“You made it! All you need to do is holdout until I get there. But

you first need to prepare. There should be a mounted gun and

other supplies to help you hold out. No way I can land unless you

are ready. Call me back once you’ve prepared. News Chopper 5

out.” The chopper Pilot informed as Bill answered the radio. The

survivors replenished their ammo and selected smaller guns for

backup. When the survivors did what the Chopper pilot

instructed, Bill called for their rescue.

“Okay I am on my way. ETA 15 minutes. Just hang in there. News

Chopper 5 out.” The Chopper Pilot informed.

“I called the chopper.” Bill informed and the survivors prepared

for the battle of their lives. The survivors climbed the back stairs

of the radio shaft onto its rooftop where a turret sat overlooking

the entire hospital roof.

“Now THAT’S what I call a BIG gun.” Louis chuckled

examining it. Shirks and screeches echoed through all four

corners of the Mercy Hospital roof and infectants sprinted

towards the building where the survivors held it down as a fort.

Bill, Louis, Francis and Zoey huddled together on the roof back

to back shooting at any infectant in sight. A Boomer tried to sneak

on Bill from behind but Francis, as sharp as he was, caught sight

of the Boomer.

“Boomer!” he warned and shot it in the stomach. Its body

exploded leaving its lower body behind in a grotesque mess, a

smoker grabbed Louis and pulled him off the roof.

“Shit.” Francis growled and jumped after Louis.

“Reloading!” Zoey informed backing up for Bill to take over her

end. Francis found the smoker behind a building dragging Louis

towards it attempting to beat him to death with its own fists.

Francis grabbed the smoker and punched it off the roof leaving it

plummeting to its death.

“Out of ammo!” Bill shouted to Zoey clicking his empty gun.

“I’m going downstairs to get more!” Zoey nodded her head

quickly and backed up Francis and Louis who were now climbing

to the roof to join her from an outside ladder. Bill used the back

stairs in the building and made his way to the ground floor to

replenish ammo. As soon as he opened the door on his way back

up, a Hunter leaped after him and missed. Bill punched the Hunter

out of his way and it fell to the ground. Without checking to see

if it was dead, Bill raced upstairs.

“Mercy Hospital, going to be running a bit late, just had a… an

incident. New’s Chopper 5 out.” The chopper Pilot informed

wearily.

“Hunter!” Zoey shouted as a Hunter shirked and leaped past the

building. She shot at it but missed and the Hunter hid downstairs.

A smoker that was hiding patiently saw Bill and grabbed him with

its tongue and yanked him towards it causing him to fall and lose

his weapon. The Hunter leaped onto the defenseless Bill, breaking

the smokers tongue and scratching him wildly and howling with

glee as Bill helplessly shot his arms out to protect his face and

chest from the Hunter’s sharp, hard fingernails. Francis, who saw

the commotion, leaped from the roof to where Bill was and

punched the Hunter off him and killed it instantly with his

shotgun, the smoker ran away. Bill patched himself up with his

first aid kit and hobbled over to the cabinet and grabbed an extra

kit and a gun.

Suddenly there was silence. There were no more infectants. The

survivors relaxed and checked their ammunition and Francis

peered out of the window constantly checking for any surprise

attacks.

“News Chopper 5 to Mercy Hospital, ETA 10 minutes. News

Chopper out.” The Chopper pilot informed.

“10 more minutes? No problem.” Louis muttered and cocked his

gun. Zoey was the first to the roof.

“Tank!” Zoey yelped as a yell boomed across the roof. Francis,

Louis and Bill got to the roof and found the Tank hurtling towards

them with massive speed. The survivors shot at the Tank

endlessly but the Tank withheld and climbed to the roof. It

punched Louis and he hit the wall with a loud thud and the Tank

swatted him off the roof.

“No! Louis!” Zoey cried as Louis fell onto the concrete ground.

“We will see about him later!” Bill shouted, “For now, we must

bring down the Tank!” Zoey did not argue. She jumped forward

and shot with rage at the Tank’s face. The Tank grabbed Zoey and

threw her into a nearby building knocking her out cold.

The Tank punched Bill in the back as he tried to leap off the roof

and he flew forward harshly onto his stomach on the concrete

grown from the force of the punch. Bill tried to get up but toppled

over by a common infectant who tried to attack from behind but

carelessly fell at his feet. The Tank picked up a rubble from the

concrete ground and threw it at Bill. Bill dogged but large rocks

flew about as the rubble collided with a building near him and a

stray rock hit him in the leg making him fall onto his back in pain.

Francis leaped onto the Tank’s shoulders. The Tank tried to grab

Francis but he was out of reach and Francis shoved a pipe bomb

into the Tank’s jaw and leaped off. The Tank raced after Francis

but couldn’t catch up with him on time. The pipe bomb exploded

in the Tanks mouth severing his head clean off his body. The

Tank’s headless body sunk to the ground miserably.

Zoey recovered consciously about two minutes after the Tank was

brought down and with Francis help, went back to the rooftop.

Bill and Louis stayed at the bottom to help where they were

covered by Francis and Zoey from the roof. Shirks and screeches

echoed loudly across the rooftop.

“Looks like they’re off their tea break.” Francis joked and

prepared for battle.

“Here they come!” Bill boomed.

The second battle was harder than the first one. This horde was

angrier, stronger and faster. The survivors shoved as many as they

could just for breathing space and reloading. The infectants

climbed past Louis and Bill downstairs as they had their hand

filled but Zoey and Francis were able to pick them off the roof

easily. Unfortunately as time passed, they were also shoving and

punching as they were surrounded by the horde.

“News Chopper to Mercy Hospital, ETA 7 minutes. News

Chopper 5 out.” The Chopper Pilot informed over the radio.

“Reloading.” Zoey informed.

“Smoker!” Bill shouted shooting desperately at the dodging

infectant.

“Watch out.” Louis declared swatting at common infectants that

tried to attack Bill from behind. In all this commotion, another

Tank took the advantage of getting to the survivors undetected

and swatted at the first person he saw.

“Tank!” Louis shirked flying like a ragged doll. Bill shot at the

Tank but the Tank swatted at the gun in his hand and punched him

through the doors of the radio shaft. Francis left Zoey on the roof

and ran after the Tank. He shot at its back to get its attention from

Bill and had it follow him away from the others. He then climbed

a ladder to the furthest building and dove bullets into the Tanks

head. The Tank yelled in pain but didn’t give in as it climbed the

ladder to where Francis was standing. The other survivors

collected themselves and ran after the Tank that was now

pursuing Francis who constantly weakened it with every few

shots.

“Come on you steroid machine!” Francis taunted. “Let’s see what

you got!” The Tank yelled angrily as if it knew what Francis was

saying and threw itself at him. Francis dogged its punches and

shot at its eyes. The Tank was rendered blind and yelled in pain

but kept perusing blindly.

“There they are!” Louis shouted pointing at the two opponents on

the roof. The survivors shot at the Tank while it was distracted by

Francis. Francis leaped off the roof and joined the others in

bringing it down. The survivors made their way back to the radio

and held their positions.

“News Chopper to Mercy Hospital, looks like you are going to be

my final run.” The Chopper Pilot informed over the radio.

Suddenly the heart leaping sound of the chopper echoed over the

roof and the helicopter came into sight. Rescue has arrived!

“The bird’s here! Let’s go!” Bill commanded making a break for

the helicopter.

“Let’s get the hell outta here!” Louis shirked following Bill.

Shirks and Screeches was heard over the helicopter’s noise and

infectants stampeded after the survivors, toppling over fallen

infectants in a desperate attempt to catch up to them.

The smoker, Boomer and a couple of Hunters lead the hungry,

blood thirsty army of terror.

“Get to the chopper!” Zoey screamed. “Let’s go, let’s go!”

“Haul Ass!” Francis boomed picking up speed as the infectants

drew closer. Bill got into the helicopter first, then Francis and

Zoey.

“Hurry up Louis!” Francis yelled as Louis made his way up the

stretch shoving infectants that grabbed at his clothes and slowing

him down. Suddenly, a long tongue grabbed him and pulled him

off the landing pad.

“Come on! I can’t hold on much longer!” The Chopper Pilot

urged and Bill got out to save Louis. Bill killed the smoker that

held Louis captive and helped fend off infectants that were

preventing them from proceeding.

“I can’t hold on much longer, hurry up!” The Pilot yelled

anxiously as Zoey and Francis fended infectants away from the

chopper. Bill and Louis climbed the stretch onto the landing pad

and leaped into the helicopter at the same time. They made it! The

Door automatically shut behind them with a loud “clank!” and the

chopper flew off into the sky leaving the nightmarish scene

behind.
