1.0 LATAR BELAKANG

Academic & Research collaboration Tour to Nottingham / Loughbrough/ Sheffield/ Imperial College (UK) Universities adalah salah satu aktiviti fakulti dalammelaksanakan Global Outreach Program (GOP). Lawatan ini telah dilaksanakan pada29 November hingga 8 Disember 2009.

Keseluruhannya seramai 12 orang peserta telah menyertai program ini yang terdiri

daripada 9 mahasiswa/i, 2 orang pensyarah pengiring dan 1 orang wakil pengurusan

fakulti.

2.0 OBJEKTIF

1. Memberi pendedahan dan interaksi pelajar di peringkat antarabangsa melalui

forum, sosial dan dialog dengan kakitangan dan pelajar universiti luar negara

yang bertaraf ’World Class’

2. Mewujudkan Kerjasama di antara UTM dengan Universiti yang dilawati bagi

menggalakkan pertukaran pelajar, budaya dan kemungkinan penyelidikan

bersama pada masa depan.

3. Membangunkan kemahiran insaniah di kalangan peserta seperti komunikasi

’oral’, ’written’ dan ’interpersonal’ dengan yakin dan efektif.

4.0 LAWATAN PERTAMA KE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND STRUCTURALENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD (Laporan ditulis oleh pelajar)

Ini merupakan universiti pertama kami melawat di United Kingdom. Kami bertolak dariNottingham selepas sarapan pagi dan sampai di Sheffield pada jam 9.00 am..

Semasa sampai di Sheffield Universiti kami disambut oleh En. Safuan staff FKA UTMyang sedang dalam pengajian PhD di Sheffield University. Kami di arah ke Bilik MesyuaratFakulti Kejuruteraan dan di sambut oleh Dr. Mariah Hogg, lecturer Jabatan Kejuruteraan Awamdengan minum pagi yang ringkas.

Timbalan Dekan Akademik - PM. Dr. Abd. Latif, staf Pengiring Dr. Redzuan dan DrRozana serta Staf FKA yang sedang dalam pengajian PhD di University of Sheffield En.

Selepas minuman pagi, jadual kami di mula dengan taklimat yang sampaikan oleh Dr.Marian Hogg tentang latar belakang Bandar Shefield, informasi tentang Sheffield University danFakulti Kejuruteraan, serta program akademik yang ditawar di di Jabatan Kejuruteraan Awam.

Akhir taklimat kami diperkenalkan kepada Prof. Ian Burgess, Professor di JabatanKejuruteraan Awam dan senior lecturer Dr. John Cripps. Selepas perbincangan yang ringkas,kami mengunjungi Makmal Jabatan Kejuruteraan Awam di bawah bimbingan Prof. Ian Burgessdan Dr. John Cripps. Dalam sesi ini, kami melawat Makmal Struktur Berat, Makmal Strukturringan, Makmal Hidraulik dan Makmal Geoteknik. Terdapat beberapa peralatan penelidikanyang agak luarbiasa dan mengkagumkan kami. Contohnya oven ujian keluli di dalam suhu tinggidan mesin tekanan 3 dimensi berkuasa tinggi. Seterusnya kami dibawa oleh Dr John Crippsmelawat makmal hidraulik dan bertemu dengan prof dan dua orang pelajar penyelidikan yangsedang menjalankan ujikaji urban drainage system. Di makmal geoteknik, kami diberi taklimatoleh En. Safuan dan juga seorang kakitangan UTHM yang sedang membuat kajian Phd mereka.

Seterusnya kami diaturkan untuk menghadiri kuliah Geoteknik tahun dua di UniversitySheffield. Dalam kelas tersebut kes-kes situasi dan kajian sebenar di tunjukan oleh pensyarahselain dengan bantuan maklumat dari nota. Walau pun kulaih hanya satu jam, ia telah membantukami memahami kegunaan sebenar pengetahuan yang kami pelajari di UTM serta caraaplikasinya. Setelah kelas tamat, kami dijemput ke bilik jamuan untuk makan tengah hari denganstaff University Sheffield dan beberapa orang pelajar dari Malaysia. Dalam perbincangan kamimendapat banyak maklumat tentang kehidupan dan cara pembelajaran di Sheffield Universiti.Pengalaman yang kami perolehi sedikit sebanyak dapat membantu kami yang berhasrat untukbelajar di luar negeri, membuat keputusan.

Selepas tamat makan tengah hari, kami dibawa melawat kampus dan persekitaranSheffield Universiti dibawah tunjuk arah 2 orang pelajar universiti tersebut. Bangunan UniversitiSheffield bertaburan (scattered) di sekeliling Bandar Sheffield dan sangat berbeza dengankampus UTM. Kami telah melawat ke perpustakaan, bangunan pengurusan, student union, danbangunan-bangunan fakulti lain.

Di Sheffield Universiti kemudahan bangunan di reka lebih mengutamakan kemudahanperlajar. Paling menarik bai kami adalah rekabentuk perpustakaan di Sheffield Universiti yangagak istimewa. Selain daripada fungsi mancari maklumat dan pengajiaan, ia juga di rekabentuksebagai satu tempat pelajar berkumpul dan berdiskusi. Tingkat bawah dan tingkat satumerupakan ruang terbuka yang membenarkan pelajar membuat pengumpulan dan perbincanganbebas. Ia juga dilengkap dengan café, kemudahan komputer yang berbagai fungsi serta ruangperbincangan terbuka yang membenarkan pelajar berbual sesuka hati. Rekabentuknya telahberjaya membinakan satu imej perpustakaan baru yang tidak terdapat di tempat lain.Perpustakaan ini dibuka 24 jam dan sentiasa dipenuhi oleh pelajar. Kami dimaklumkan ada jugapelajar yang tidur di sana sewaktu musim peperiksaan.

5.0 SECOND DAY VISIT – DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY OFNOTTINGHAM (Laporan di tulis oleh pelajar)

On the third day of the student outreach programme (2nd Dec 2009), we went to the CivilEngineering Department, University of Nottingham. The purpose of this visit is to get to knowmore about the university in terms of the academic program, research and life at the University.We woke up early in the morning at around 0830 local time. After enjoying great meal preparedby Dr. Rosli Noor who is one of the staff from FKA UTM who studied in University ofNottingham, we departed to the University and we reached there at around 0900.

We were welcome by the Head of department of Civil Engineering, Dr. John S. Owenand Prof Kim Elliot. The programme started by a briefing about the University of Nottingham byDr. Owen. In presentation, we were exposed to some background of the campus, the city, theuniversity and the Department of Civil Engineering. He also mentioned that the number ofMalaysian student is increasing since the University opened a branch campus in Malaysia whichis located in Semenyih.

The program at Nottingham was continued with a colloqium given by research students.The first presenter was Mr Naveed Ahmad. His research was on the topic of Asphalt MaterialThe research was carried out in the Nottingham Transportation Engineering Centre (NTEC), oneof the largest transportation research centre in UK. The second presenter was Meinard Tiessenwho is doing a research about Predicting the Development of Crescentic Bed Patterns. The nextPHD presenter was Ms Juan Wang, with the title of Shakedown Analysis for GeotechnicalApplication. The last presenter, who is also the staff of FKA, Dr. Rosli presented his PhDresearch. Besides that, we also had a chance to meet with other UTM staff and Malaysianstudents who are currently studying in the University. They are Pn. Zainab from FKA who isdoing research on Hydrology and also En. Kamil from Kolej Sains & Teknologi, UTMInternational Campus.

After the presentations, we were then introduced to the student Ambassadors of thedepartment of Civil Enginnering, Rob and Damilola. They ackted as tourist guide and showed usthe laboratories, research and study facilities in the Civil Engineering Department. Most of theequipment in the laboratories was funded by industries and research centre. Besides that, we alsovisited the computer laboratories.

During the lunch time, we met a few more students from Malaysia who are currentlydoing their undergraduate programme in Nottingham. We also took this opportunity to discussfuther with the PHD students on their topics and the experience have had in this University. Theyhad also told us about life in England and gave us a lots of advises in studies.

Lunch time is the time we can socialize more with the students and staff there. At the rightis a picture showing Dr. Latif giving a token of appreciation to the Prof Owen.

The following activity was campus tour. Our great tour guides of the day were Rob andDamilola. They showed us around the campus and explained to us the facilities that they have inthe University. University of Nottingham has a very nice and big building for student union. Thebuilding includes facilities such as book store, shops, study corner, cafeteria, surau and etc. Thecentre is really convenient for student as they can easily grab their things that they need for studythere. The building is open 24 hours a day and it is a good place for students who wish to find aplace for study at night. The University is also open to public during office hours to enjoy thenice scene around the campus.

From our observation at the University of Nottingham, we feel that there are someaspects that UTM needs to emulate and enhance to make the UTM campus more internationalflavor, environmental friendly and increase productivity. Among them is the pond and stream inUTM should be manaed and beutified like what is done at Nottingham. University ofNottingham is named campus in the park as there is a lot of greenery in the campus. Theuniversity put in extra effort to beautify the green area around the lake to make it a naturalrecreation centre. Furthermore, the campus is more environmental friendly as there are a lot ofbicycle and pedestrian tracks which encourage the campus community to reduce the dependencyon motor transport. This scene is not available at UTM. The frequent bus services which are ontime and clean are another excellent example that we should follow. Due to the low number ofprivate vehicle in the Nottingham campus, the air is fresher and roads are not congested. All thishave contributed to a fresh, relaxing and natural environment in the campus. This make theUniverity of Nottingham is a good place to study.

As we were informed by The Head of Department of Civil Engineering, Dr. John S.Owen, they have a good ratio of the postgraduate and undergraduate which is around 1 to 2. Inthis way, they could focus on research development while producing quality graduates at thesame time. Most of the research in the Department was funded by the industries and nongovernment bodies. By this way, the Department could afford to have high technology andexpensive equipment in the laboratories, such as centrifuge in the Geotechnical Laboratories.The mutual relationship between the industries and department is a very good way to raise fundfor research and help establish the reputation of the department in the international level.

We were also briefed on the syllabus, material, learning and teaching approach of thedepartment. We found that the way of embedding the laboratories into the core subject is a betterway to help the student to understand the subject. It is a good way to fulfill our OBErequirement. At the same time, the department offers an integrated project for the students. Theproject works include conceptual design, field works, design projects could help student to applythings which had been learn in the class on the actual work and at the same time train theirgeneric skills like communicating, team working, problem solving and leadership.

Finally, we were impressed by the facilities in the department. The laboratoriesequipments were in good and complete condition although the building was small. The computerlaboratories was also well equipped with adequate computers which were capable of runningmost of the latest engineering software.

6.0 LAWATAN KETIGA – DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND BUILDING ENGINEERING,

UNIVERSITY OF LOUGHBOROUGH (Laporan di tulis oleh pelajar)

Hari keempat (3rd Dec 2009) kami di United Kingdom dipenuhi dengan lawatan keUniversity of Loughborough, yang terletak kira-kira 40 minit dari Notthingham. Loughboroughmerupakan sebuah pekan kecil yang berhampiran dengan Junction 23 dan juga East MidlandsInternational Airport. Ketibaan kami disambut baik oleh staf dari jabatan Kejuruteraan Awamdan Bangunan, University of Loughborough. Kami di jamu dengan teh dan kopi sebelum dibawa masuk ke bilik tetamu. Ucapan alu-aluan disampaikan oleh Dr Frncis Edum-Fotwe. Setiaphadirin yang berada di dalam bilik itu diperkenalkan satu persatu, termasuk Prof Koji Shiono dantidak ketinggalan juga pelajar-palajar Malaysia yang berada di sana turut memperkenalkan dirimasing-masing serta projek serta kajian yang sedang dilakukan oleh mereka.

Selepas sessi berkenalan, kami di bawa melawat pusat Inovasi. Bangunannya agak jauhdan kami berjalan merentasi kampus termasuk kawasan asrama. Malangnya hujan renyai-renyaidan cuaca sangat sejuk dan berangin menyebabkan kam tidak dapat menikmati keindahankampus. Di pusat innovasi kami diberi taklimat oleh pegawainya dan juga melawat fasiliti yang

ada. Pusat ini memberi peluang kepada usahawan baru yang mempunyai idea perniagaan tetapitiada kemahiran teknikal dan modal untuk memulakan perniagaan. Pusat innovasi akan memberibimbingan termasuk staf dan sokongan peralatan pejabat sehingga perniagaan yang ditubuhkanitu boleh bergerak sendiri. Pusat innovasi seperti ini sangat wajar diwujudkan di UTM.

Kemuncak lawatan di Universiti of Loughborough ialah, kami merasai pengalamanberada di dewan kuliah pelajar postgraduate tahun dua di sana. Kami dibawa untuk mengikutikuliah pengurusan pembinaan selama satu jam yang disampaikan oleh Prof Tharek Hassan.Sepanjang satu jam mengikuti kuliah tersebut kami mendapati suasana pembelajaran di sanaagak berbeza dengan suasana di UTM. Perbezaan yang paling ketara adalah dari segi interaksiantara para pelajar dan pensyarah. Pelajar-pelajar di sana lebih berani untuk bertanyakan soalankepada pensyarah semasa pensyarah sedang memberikan kuliah berbanding di Malaysia di manakebanyakan pelajar di Malaysia kurang berinteraksi dengan pensyarah semasa di dewan kuliah.

Aktiviti seterusnya, kami dibawa bertemu dengan pelajar-pelajar Malaysia yang berada diUniversiti of Loughborough sambil makan tengahari. Mereka berkongsi pengalaman bagaimanapertama kali mereka menjejakkan kaki di sana serta halangan dan dugaan yang terpaksa merekatempuhi semasa berada di sana. Semangat serta ketahanan mental dan fizikal yang kuatdiperlukan untuk seseorang berada di negara luar. Kami sempat bertukar-tukar alamat emel sertanombor telefon.

Selain itu, kami juga diperkenalkan dengan staf-staf dari jabatan Kejuruteraan Awamyang menguruskan segala urusan serta permasalahan yang dihadapi pelajar-pelajar Malaysia disana. Mereka menguruskan permasalahan visa, biasiswa serta lain-lain. Seterusnya, setelahberborak serta bertukar-tukar pendapat, kami disajikan dengan makan tengahari oleh pihakuniversiti. Walaupun kami agak sukar untuk menerima menu makanan tengahari mereka, namunatas sebab perut kosong, kami cuba juga untuk menikmati hidangan yang disediakan.

Masa lawatan agak terhad. Kami tidak berkesempatan untuk melawat seluruh kampus.Dalam perjalanan pulang kami singgah untuk sembahyang di surau di dalam kampus. Sunguhmengejutkan, surau nya agak luas dan terjaga dengan rapi sama seperti keadaan di Malaysia,malah lebih baik lagi berbanding dengan sesetengah surau di dalam kampus UTM.

Pengalaman di Universiti of Loughborough merupakan satu pengalaman yang amat sukaruntuk dilupakan. Keindahan kawasan di sekitar universiti amat sukar untuk digambarkan dengankata-kata. Keramahan staf-staf universiti yang melayan kami amat dihargai. Sekiranya diberipeluang belajar di UK, mungkin Loughborough University antara university yang akan kami beripertimbbangan serius.

7.0 LAWATAN KEEMPAT – IMPERIAL COLLEGE OF LONDON (Laporan ditulis oleh

pelajar)

Kami tiba di London pada malam hari selepas beberapa jam perjalanan dari Universiti ofLoughboorough. Sebaik check-in di hotel, kami pergi berjamu selera di Malaysian Hall. Tidak disangka, ramai orang Malaysia, pelajar dan pelancung yang pergi makan di situ. Pada jam 7.30pagi hari berikutnya kami telah bertolak ke Imperial College dengan hanya berjalan kaki keranakampusnya tidak jauh dari hotel. Didalam perjalanan, kami dapat melewati beberapa tempatmenarik seperti Royal Albert Hall dan recreation park. Tepat jam 8.30 pagi, kami tiba di ImperialCollege dan kedatangan kami disambut baik oleh En Colin Kerr, seorang pengurus pejabat(Office administrator) sebagai wakil pihak Imperial College.Tanpa membuang masa, Sesi suaikenal terus bermula selama 15 minit diikuti dengan sedikit taklimat oleh En Kerr.. Kemudiankami semua dijamu dengan sedikit juadah sarapan pagi selama 15 minit.

Pada jam 9.30 pagi, aktiviti seterusnya bermula, di mana ia dimulakan dengan lawatan kePerpustakaan. Wakil pustakawan memperkenalkan diri dan memberi sedikit taklimat mengenaikemudahan dan perkhidmatan yang disediakan. Melalui pemerhatian kami,didapati bahawaperkhidmatan dan kemudahan yang disediakan sangat canggih dan seolah-olah seperti pihakuniversiti mengetahui dengan sangat mendalam tentang apa yang diperlukan oleh pelajar-pelajar.Di perpustakaan ini, terdapat beberapa ruang yang berbeza-beza yang telah diklasifikasikanuntuk belajar secara senyap, tempat untuk berbincang, tempat untuk beristirehat danmenenangkan fikiran dimana secara majoritinya, kemudahan-kemudahan tersebut tidak terdapatdi UTM. Terdapat juga cafeteria di dalam perpustakaan. Dari segi struktur pula, kami agakkagum dengan konsep bumbung dalam bangunan dimana mereka menggunakan ‘wafflelaboratories’ didalam perpustakaan yang mana tidak terdapat di UTM.

Pada jam 10.00 pagi, aktiviti diteruskan dengan lawatan sekitar kampus di mana kamiberpeluang melawat beberapa bangunan kampus yang bersejarah dan traditional. Bangunan inberbentuk traditional di mukan hadapan tetapi sangat moden di bahagian dalam. Seterusnya kamimelawat makmal struktur berat dan makmal struktur ringan. Di sana, kami diberi pengenalanmengenai kemudahan serta peralatan yang digunakan untuk kajian-kajian yang dilakukan. Selainitu, terdapat juga demonstrasi ujikaji oleh wakil pelajar PhD mengenai projek yang telahdijalankan. Makmal struktur ringan agak tidak terurus kerana kam difahaman mereka sedangmembuat ubahsuai dan menempatkan semetara makmal berkenaan di ruang simpanan.

Kemudian,pada jam 11.00 pagi, kami melawat ke sekitar makmal kejuruteraan tanah danalam sekitar, serta bilik kuliah. Jam 12.00 tengahari kami disediakan makan tengah hari. Kamiberjamu selera di dalam bilik rehat staff dan pelajar postgraduate. Kami difahamkan bilik inimerupakan tempat bersosial antara pelajar penyelidikan dan professor di mana perbincangantentang akademik di lakukan. Pelajar undergraduate tidak dibenar di dalam bilik ini. Kamisempat berbual dengan beberapa pelajar penyelidikan di sana, termasuk Miss Arul, seorangpelajar phd dari Malaysia yang menyambung pelajaran disan. Pada waktu ini Prof Nethercot,seorang prof yang sangat dihormati dan dikenali di seluruh dunia dating berbual-bual dengankami. Kami juga mengambil peluang ini dengan bertanya pelbagai soalan mengenai ImperialCollege dan merisik tentang peluang untuk menyambung pelajaran disana.

Seterusnya, pada jam 2.00 petang, kami telah diberi peluang menghadiri kuliah hidrologibersama pelajar tahun 2 selama 1 jam. Pada permulaan kuliah, pensyarah telah memperkenalkankami kepada plajar mereka dan kami diberi tepukan gemuruh. Apa yang telah diperhatikanadalah, teknologi pengajaran disana agak mundur sedikit kerana mereka masih lagi memakai rodsebagai penunjuk di papan putih. Cetakan slide sangat kecl dan tidak boleh dibaca. Pelajar-pelajar pula tidak menumpukan sepenuh perhatian dan tidak menghormati pensyarah yangmengajar di mana mereka makan di dalam kelas, berborak, menghantar SMS, membacasuratkhabar, bermain belon dan pelbagai gelagat telah dlihat di kalangan pelajar. Pensyarahmereka pula tidak begitu memperdulikan sikap pelajar. Ini mungkin keran bilik kuliah yangbesar dan pelajarnya sanat ramai. Cara pensyarah mengajar pula adalah berbeza dengan carapensyarah di UTM mengajar dimana pensyarah di sana tidak menunjukkan sifat ingin membantupelajar dan terdapat jurang di antara pelajar dan pensyarah, tidak seperti di UTM di manapensyarah-pensyarah begitu dekat dengan pelajar, memahami dan mempunyai sifat inginmembantu pelajar. Hal ini mungkin berlaku di dalam bilk kuliah yang kami hadiri sahaja.

Pada jam 3 petang, lawatan sekitar kampus dan bangunan persatuan pelajar dimulakandan pada jam 4 petang kami telah dibenarkan pulang kerana aktiviti di Imperial College telahtamat selepas sesi penyampaian cenderamata dilakukan.

DAripada pengamatan kami, Imperial College adalah antara pilihan yang perlu diberipertimbangan jika ingin menyambung pelajaran di UK kerana terdapat kemudahan yang baik dansuasana pembelajaran yang kondusif dari segi akademik mahupun social. Sungguhpun begitutidak dinafikan bahawa belajar di UTM juga adalah pilihan yang baik bagi rakyat Malaysia,terutamanya apabila aspek kewangan menjadi factor utama. Daripada pengalaman lawatan ini,kami dapat meningkatkan interaksi dan interpersonal skill dengan pelajar dan professor sertastaff disana. Kerjasama diantara UTM dan Imperial College untuk menggalakkan lagi pertukaranpelajar, budaya dan penyelidikan masa hadapan untuk kepentingan negara dan UTM jugaberkemungkinan besar boleh dicapai. Selain itu,lawatan ini dapat membangunkan pengetahuanilmu, kemahiran dan pengalaman untuk mencapai ‘common goal’. Pelajar juga dapat melihatsendiri dan merasai bagaimana melanjutkan pelajaran di Imperial College serta dapat mengetahuimengapa Imperial College merupakan antara university terbaik di dunia.

8.0 CHAPERONING ’SNAPSHOT’

At the University of Sheffield

From my email correspondence prior to the visit, Sheffield was the most organized andprompt in responding to my emails. There was an assigned staff who look after the emailenquiries.

The reception was very simple, as if there is nothing happen in the department. Nobodyseems curious about our presence. The first itinerary was a briefing by Marian Hogg, a lecturerin water/environmental. She is also overseeing all quality issues within the Department and is theundergraduate admissions tutor. The briefing was about Sheffield, the university, the departmentand their program of studies. I observed that the presentation slides were prepared veryattractively and in a very professional manner such that when you hear and look at thepresentation, you would feel that this is the best university in the UK, and you would want tocome, or send your children to study here already. The presentation focused more on the strengthand uniqueness of their programs. I believe that the slide is a standard one and is used to markettheir department. Anybody from the department can use it to make presentation to any visitor atanytime. Perhaps they have many visitors like us visiting their department regularly. That is whythey were well prepared with the presentation.

Then we were lead by Prof Ian Burgess and John Cripps (a senior lecturer) to visitstructures, Water lab and Geotech lab. (Did we visit environmental lab? I can’t recall it). All inone building, stacked in a few stories. The labs were very crowded. Definitely our labs are morespacious than them. There were a lot testing machines but the lab was quite at that time. Therewas one big sophisticated machine for compressing concrete in 3D. Prof Burgess said themachine was designed and build in the lab, no one else in the world has it. It must have costhundreds of thousands of ringgit. I’m 1000% sure that we will never get a research grant to buildsuch a machine here in our university. In the geotechnical lab we were briefed by 2 phd studentsabout their research. One of them was Safuan, our staff, and the other waas a UTHM staff, alsoour former UTM student (forget the name).

After the lab visit, the students were lead to attend a 1 hour geotechnical lecture while we(the lecturers) mingled around with Safuan and the other guy and discussing with one of juniorlecturer.. There was a nice and spacious surau also in the departmentt. When I asked our studentsabout the lecture, many said that there is nothing special with the lecture here. Some said UTMlectures are more fun!

Then lunch were served. The Head of Department, Prof Harm Askes, a number ofSheffield lecturers and a number of Malaysian students were present. Lunch were simple and dry(a few kinds of sandwiches) and fruits. I mean you still can shake hand while eating lunch. Nospoon, no messy kuah nor wet hand! No need table also. You can socialize while eating lunch(though somebody said it is recommended that eating lunch should be in sitting not standing). Ilike their style though because at that time a lot of personal and unofficial thing can be discussed.Some even discussed about bad things about OBE!. Prof Askes is a tall person; my height is onlyup to his chest. In fact other staffs are also tall. I felt very inferior and difficult to talk to them!

From the presentation by Marian, and from my talking to Prof Askes, I understand thatthe curriculum is also OBE, which is the trend of education nowadays. Also they have theintegrated course kind of thing like what we call here the capstone project. In fact they have thereal construction project for students which they were proud to show it in the slide. Which mean,as Prof Askes agreed, with the OBE things, they also have more works to do now than in theyesteryears. However Prof Askes did not convinced that CL (corporative learning), or PBL arebetter modes of teaching (Sorry PBL proponents!). He still preferred the traditional way ofteaching and learning, i.e. chalk and board. Also my understanding is that each staff also doesadministrative works like us here, like Marian who looks at the quality issues within theDepartment (I guess pretty much like the much hated MQA thing....) as well as theundergraduate admissions tutor (seems like 2 AJKs for her).

Then we went to tour the campus, guided by 2 international students, one from Iran andone from China. The professors did not follow us. Tour campus is not an academic thing, so it islogical that the professor would not involve. I think at UTM we also should allow our students toget involve with the department affair such as fronting the visitors. The student can be paid byhourly rate to show around any visitor who comes to visit our campus. And they can improvetheir interpersional and communication skill too.

One of the most impressive facilities that Sheffield has is a huge four storey studentlearning center which looks like a library, but full of tables, computers, books, discussion rooms,sofas. Cafeteria etc. for use by all students. Only students and staffs can enter the building andthe entry is controlled by the student card which functions like a touch and go card. After classes,students are flocking into this building to study or do their homework or project or even sleep. Itis opened 24 hours. This is one of the facilities that impressed our group most. Our students saidthat they dream about UTM to also have such a facility. To me this building alone makesSheffield look like a real university campus. Back here, I’m sorry to say that students cannoteven hide from heavy rain in between classes. I had a dream a few day later that the whole C09block has been renovated to be like that. Sadly it was my dream.

At The University of Nottingham

Our visit was welcomed by Prof John Owen, the department head who waited patiently infront of the door of the Civil Eng building. Prof Kim Elliot, the guru of precast construction wasalso present. Prof Owen still looked young to me and he is also a very tall person. I also feltinferior like I was at Sheffield because of his tallness, Or was I too short?? Anyway I let Dr.Latif did more talking (same as at Sheffield indeed, and I only menyampok in the background orlaugh whenever they laugh. Sometimes I was not sure what was the context. I heard so muchHarry Porter slang I UK!

Prof Owen gave the briefing, about the University, their campus, their academic program,their uniqueness, etc. My memory faded too fast. What I could remember is only that theirprograms are also having the integrated student project which involves all civil engineeringdisciplines. This is to answer the industrial needs nowadays. Whether they use OBE approach inthe curriculum was not very clear to me. But definitely they have the program objective, theattribute they wanted to produce for their students, bla.. bla.. bla.. Sounds like OBE stuff, is itnot? Following Prof Owen was the presentation about research project by four PhD internationalstudents. One of them Dr Rosli Noor, our very own lecturer who likes to call himself ‘Black’. Iwould like to suggest we should call our students to present their projects to visitors like them atUTM. At least it can build confidence in them

After students presentation, we visited the laboratories: structures laboratories inparticular. The equipment was not amazed me because most of them I already knew about. Wewent through buildings that house lecturer’s room, lecture halls, library, computer labs, cafeteria,students centers etc. There I bumped into Kamran, an ex-FKA student from Pakistan whose sonwas my son’s best friend in 2004-2005. He did his Masters degree here at UTM and now doingPhD at Nott. I mean, not only we sent our own staff to UK to study, but also internationalstudents there got trained buy us initially! In a way, we already have been recognized indeed thatwe produce international quality students. Our tour around the campus was also guided bystudents, 2 undergraduates, who seemed to know a lot about their campus. How about ourstudents here? Have we trained them for this type of generic skill, or just mere rhetoric and howto assess them in the ISO/MQA forms at the end of each semester?

Then back to the meeting room for lunch. Again the lunch was simple, similar toSheffield. Compared to us, whenever we serve lunch, it must be a heavy one, full course, kuah,curry etc. and enough for the whole department but never involve students. At UTM, eating timemeans eat, no talking or socializing. There, other Malaysians and local students were also invitedfor lunch. Too many people came, till the food was a bit too little. But anyway, everybodyenjoyed socializing while eating. This is my point! Got it?

At Nottingham, we met Puan Noerwati, our ex Penolong Pendaftar. She works as pegawai tadbiralso at Nott. I want to highlight her story that we must learn from people in the west. PuanNoerwati said, she used to handle an exhibition for 60 companies alone by herself. Imagine thatif we were to organize the same event here, it must have eaten up 20 man-months of ourlecturer’s time. Agree? Look at APSEC if you disagree. That is one reason why they can writepaper but we cannot. Also read this: Puan Noerwati said, “they don’t use PAPER for

corresponding between them in the department or else where”. All by EMAIL. Wasting paperwas non issue at all there. Here we are still debating about scanning evidences?. And sending thetimetables or whatever form with a cover letter for each: Example: “Dengan hormatnyadisertakan jadual waktu untuk semester bla.. Bla.. accompanying the time table”. 1 rim of paperwasted for this alone and at the end of the day we still have to scan it for evidence. UTMmanagement only see “journal papers” but not wasteing real papers. Anyhow there is one areathat FKA can beat Department of Civil Eng, Nottingham Engineering. They are proud of beingone of the largest civil department in UK, having close to 400 students. Dr. Latif stunned ProfOwen by telling him that we have 1300 students. Perhaps they can come to FKA to learn how tomanage students.

At the Department of Civil and Building Engineering, Loughborough University

On the way to Lougborough from Nottingham I was so worried whether there are peoplewho would wait for our group. That was because, prior to that their Dead of Department and hisdeputy has sent me email that they will not be in the office during our visit. Right in front of thesecurity check in, Dr. Francis Edum-Fotwe called me asking when are we arriving. It soothedme.

In the Civil Department, we were greeted by Dt Francis Fotwe, Prof. Koji Shiono andanother professor whom I could not remember his name. We arrived quite late, at around 10amso there was not enough time for Dr Fotwe to give presentation about the department, which healready prepared with the power point and projector. After a brief introduction, Dr Fotwe took usto visit CICE, an innovation center by walking through the campus, dormitory and some otherfaculties. Dr Fotwe is also tall. His height had increased my inferiority complex. Anyway he wasvery friendly, could speek a few malay words and I called him by his first name, Francis. Theinnovation center nurture new idea for bussiness. People with ideas but without capital andlacking of bussiness knowledge can propose to CICE. If they found the business is viable, thecentre allows them to open the office at the centre and start doing bussiness under the guidanceof the experts from the university. They have many success story. Back here, but I am not awareabout any business which flourished from our BIP. On the way back we passed by a field withbuidings on it. Francis told us that it is cricket research centre. What?? What kind of researchthey do? He said he don’t what reseach they do.

Then Francis lead us to visit construction lab. He showed as a new equipment which wasdesigned and built in that lab. If te project was successful, Francis confidently said that it willrevolutionize the construction industry as all brick laying work can be done using machine. Afterthat the students were asked to attend a lecture on constructon by Prof. Tharek Hassan, while thelecturers followed Francis to visit European Constuction Institute (ECI), Water Engineering andDeveloment Centre (WEDC) and Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (engCETL).Prof Naomi, the director of ECI briefed us on the activities in ECI, a non profit organization,surviced by donation from more than 60 construction related companies. Prof Sohail Khan

briefed us on the WEDC activities and research projects around the world. The engCETLfocused on research on how to improve teaching engineering effectively. The centre also supportthe lecturers on how technical thing such as preparing web base or computer based teachingmaterial. I believe the engCETL function is moreless similar to our CTL. We were told thatLoughborough has implemented integrated design projects (we call it capstone project) some 15years ago. We at FKA just discussed a month ago about introducing and incorporating theproject in our new curriculum, yet with some objections by some staff. In this case, we arebehind Loughborough by more than 15 years! At one point, I did not remember on what issue,Francis said that ”Perhaps our most prominent alumni is Zaimi” referring to our Prof MuhdZaimi Majid.

After engCETL, we went back to Civil Eng Department for lunch. I was surprise to seeso mane Malaysian students being invited for lunch together. One of them was Miss FarahJaafaran who is studying at WEDC. She was my advisee in last semester and I wrote myrecommendation for her to apply to Loughborough. I was proud to tell Francis that she was myformer student. As usual the lunch was sandwiches, but this time a lot and we couldn’t finishthem, despite of so many students came.

At Loughborough, the research are mainly done through recearch centres where researchand postgraduate students are attched to the research centres. There many research centres beingestablished in Loughborough with specific focus area.

At the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Imperial College

We arrived at Imperial College at 9.30am. We were greeted by Mr Colin Kerr, an officeadministrator. The whole of our visit to Imperial College was fronted by Mr. Kerr alone, no oneelse! First we were briefed by him about the Imperial College, their success story, academicprograms, research, etc.

Imperial College also implemented an intergrated design project (capstone project) butjust two years ago. This is actualy to fullfil the need of the industries. Sounds familiar?Supprisingly they were behind Loughborough in such teaching innovation. Then Mr. Kerrshowed a picture of a man who is one of the most famous engineer (whom I forgot his name) inthe UK. Imperial College is so proud of having such a big name from their alumni. Perhaps wealso should show off any prominent figure who graduated from our department in our futuremarketing presentation. I believe the success story of our alumni can be used as marketing tool.

From the presentation about their academic program, I could guess that they also implementedOBE thing, though Mr Kerr did not mention it specifically. According to Mr Kerr, one of thereason why they have to change their curriculm to this type is because the quality of the studentsnowdays are not as good as students in the good old days. So they have to put extra effort toeducate them. What? This is also happening in Malaysia! To my question why we need to

implement OBE things while in the past curriculum we still could produce good engineer as theone he showed it in the slide. Mr Kerr argeed to my question but he said he had no answer. Myguess is because it is the current trend where every body do it, so we also should do it.... By theway I felt much more confident at Imperial College because Mr. Kerr is only as tall as me.

After presentation, Mr. Kerr took us to visit library, dormitory area, historic buldingfacade, and lastly the laboratories. On the outside Imperial College buildings they look sohistoric but on the inside they are very contemporary. In the environmental lab there are oldmodel computers which still use 3.5” diskette. The structures labs were very crowded withequipment. I felt very blessed with the space that we have in UTM.

Then we were lead to lunch in the postgraduate and staff rest room. We were informedthat in this room, as big as our staff rest room, usually research students have their dicussion withcollegue and with the professors. Undergraduate students are not allowed. The mood was sorelaxing in the room where we can socialize while eating lunch. Some took a nap. As usual, thelunch was sandwiches. At this time Prof Nethercot came to chat with. He appologized that hecould not join us for a longer time due to tight schedule. He looked much more bussier than us atUTM, but yet he could write papers. I soothed myself by thinking that all best students in theworld go to Imperial Colleges. Even the professor don’t write by himself, he still can producepapers because their students are all good, like our Dr. Airil. Give me two students like Dr Airiland I can write 5 papers a year. Back home we are busy defending ourself from many annoyingstudents, be they local or foreigner, who are not able to do work by themself. Let alone to askthem to write papers.

After lunch, we attended a lecture on global warming. I am not sure what course it was,but looked like a form five geography materials. Lecture room was big. The students could bearound 60 or 70. Most of them were playful and did not give much attention to the lecture.Looking at the lecture style, many of us agreed that we were not impressed studying at ImperialCollege. The lecture was too monotonuos. Maybe this one alone, I don’t know. But all I can saythat attending lecture in the US universities were much more fun than in UK, period.

9.0 KESIMPULAN:

Faedah/Dapatan dalam lawatan:

Sepanjang perjalanan dan pengalaman kami untuk Global Outreach UK universiti,terdapat banyak informasi baru yang dapat kami perolehi yang mana boleh dimanfaatkanbersama. Kami diperkenalkan dengan banyak peralatan canggih dan baru yang mana jarang danmungkin tidak dapat kita temui di kebanyakan universiti-universiti tempatan.

Kebanyakan peralatan yang disediakan disana mempunyai nilai harga penyelidikan yangtinggi sesuai dengan keperluan penggunaan peralatan tersebut. Antara peralatan tersebut adalahmesin ujian terhadap konkrit bertelulang untuk mengkaji kesannya terhadap kehadiran haba yang

tinggi. Mesin tersebut dapat mengenakan haba sehingga beratus-ratus darjah selsius. Selain itu,kami juga berpeluang untuk mengumpul maklumat dan memanfaatkan kepakaran staf di sanadengan bertanyakan segala permasalahan yang kami miliki.

Kebanyakan daripada kami, merupakan pelajar tahun akhir yang mana menjadi syaratbagi setiap pelajar universiti untuk mengendalikan projek sarjana muda. Di sana kami telahbanyak mengumpul idea mereka dalam membantu mencambahkan idea kami untuk kepentinganprojek tersebut.

Melalui program ‘Global Outreach’, pelajar dapat mengembangkan bakat-bakat yang adaseperti berkomunikasi dengan yakin dan efektif dan yakin dengan kebolehan diri sendiri. Pelajarjuga dapat meluaskan pandangan, meluaskan cara pemikiran dan pergaulan serta menambah ilmupengetahuan. Pelajar berpeluang merasai, melihat dan meneliti tentang sesuatu university denganlebih mendalam dan seterusnya dapat membuat pilihan yang tepat bagi menyambung pelajarandiperingkat yang lebih tinggi. Program ini memberi peluang membandingkan UTM danuniversiti-universiti luar negara. Program seperti ini harus diteruskan kerana memberi impakyang sangat besar kepada pelajar yang membuatkan pelajar menjadi lebih positif dari segalaaspek dan pelajar dapat keluar dari kelompok yang mundur serta terkebelakang.

Komen:

Lawatan sambil belajar selama satu minggu ke beberapa universiti di sekitar UnitedKingdom merupakan pengalaman yang amat bermakna buat kami. Kunjungan sulung kami keUniversiti Sheffield mendedahkan satu suasana kampus yang sangat menarik untuk dikongsikanbersama.

Universiti Sheffield mempunyai orientasi susun atur bangunan yang agak berbezaberbanding universiti-universiti lain yang kami kunjungi. Suasana kampus yang disusun secarateratur di dalam bandar menyediakan suatu suasana belajar yang berlainan berbanding dengankebanyakan universiti-universiti tempatan. Suasana kampus di dalam bandar dapatmengurangkan tekanan belajar dan melatih pelajar supaya dapat merangka kerja harian merekadengan lebih kreatif.

Selain itu, Universiti Sheffield juga dapat menyediakan peralatan makmal yang canggihdan berteknologi tinggi yang mana dapat dimanfaatkan oleh pelajar. Peluang yang diberikankepada kami untuk merasai suasana belajar di dalam kelas telah membuka minda kami tentangpendekatan-perdekatan yang diguna pakai oleh para pensyarah di sana. Pendekatan yangdigunakan adalah agak efektif untuk mengggambarkan segala teori yang disampaikan. Pensyarahdi sana mendedahkan sebahagian kajian-kajian yang dijalankan oleh pihak universiti yangdirasakan relevan untuk dikongsikan. Kaedah pembelajaran seperti ini telah banyak membantupelajar untuk memahami sesetengah konsep yang diajarkan kepada mereka.

Kami juga mendapat informasi daripada pelajar di sana yang menyatakan bahawa latihandalam makmal tidak diasingkan di dalam satu kod subjek, malah ianya disatukan didalam subjekteori yang berkaitan bagi meningkatkan keberkesanan pembelajaran. Ujian dan latihan dalammakmal hanya akan dikendalikan apabila para pelajar telah menjalani teori yang berkaitan.

Cadangan:

Secara umumnya kami menganggap program yang telah selamat kami jalani ini telahlebih 90% keseluruhan objektif program. Maka, terdapat beberapa perkara yang kami rasakansesuai untuk dicadangkan kepada pihak fakulti yang mana mungkin dapat dijadikan elemen-elemen penambahbaikkan yang dapat buat untuk program-program yang akan datang.

Pihak fakulti dapat merangka lebih banyak slot interaksi bersama pelajar-pelajar disana.Melihat kepada objektif-objektif program yang digariskan sukar untuk dicapai kerana kurangnyasesi-sesi interaksi yang tidak formal bersama-sama pelajar disana.

Selain itu, program lawatan yang sangat bermakna dan boleh dipanjangkan jangka masalawatannya untuk meningkatkan keselesaan interaksi peserta dan perjalanan keseluruhanprogram.

Global Outreach Program harus diteruskan bagi mengahasilkan pelajar yang bukan sahajaterbaik dari segi akademik malah terbaik dari pelbagai aspek supaya dihormati oleh masyarakatyang mana ia sekaligus memberi kesan yang positif kepada UTM dan negara Malaysia.
