INTRODUCTORY TASK
What is a music magazine?
This is a coloured booklet
that is designed to
entertain and inform a
niche audience.
What content
(text/copy/writing/articles/stories)
would you expect to find in a
music magazine? You would expect to find interviews with
artists that have new single/releases etc, tour dates, from artists related to the specific
genre also reviews from critics, in addition to this top albums of the week with availability
to download playlists, furthermore other
pages include new technology, gossip adverts from other products.
INTRODUCTORY TASK
Identify general characteristics / features that you would expect to
find in all music magazines?
Plenty of colour, captions, large images, artist
information, posters, freebies and competitions
, film reviews, clothing sites and puzzles
What images would you
expect to find in a music
magazine? You would expect to find images
from the artists’ live
performances, moreover pictures
of the artist with a background that
relates to their music, added to
that instruments that relate to
the genre of the magazine
and also pictures of new
releases of albums covers.
Features and
characteristics they all
have.-Masthead-Cover lines
-Date-Barcode -Colour
-Main Images of artists -Rule of thirds
These characteristics are very important as they are
conventional and feature on all magazines.
Differences between the magazines are a range in close
up and medium shots you are able to see expression but on the other hand fashion for example ‘Q’ and ‘Billboard’ are close ups.
Some cover lines are across the image to stand out, such
as ‘NME’ and ‘Top of the Pops’ are very colourful and eye catching whereas ‘Q’ and
‘Billboard’ are very formal and consistent to their specific
house style.
This is the NME magazine, which
is based around the Indie/Rock
/pop genre. Examples that
support this statement, are the
artists featured in the magazine
such ‘Kate Nash and ‘Jack
Penate.’
In addition to this the cover lines
are very clear about what is
going to be displayed to the
target audience, for instance
‘NME Rock Riot’.
The target audience for this
magazine in my opinion would
be aged 17-30 boy and men with
knowledge of the variety of
different genres featured in the
magazine.
