Codes & Conventions • The codes & conventions know what genre of music

interests them the best. For music videos they also help people understand the music genres too.

• They can be placed into 2 categories – ‘TECHNICAL’ and ‘SYMBOLIC’

• TECHINCAL = Structures how equipment and technology are used in order to show the meaning, this is usually shown using different camera shots and angles. Also by editing in a unique and different way by using non-diegetic & diegetic sound as well as linking it towards the chosen genre.

Codes & Conventions (Cont.)• SYMBOLIC = Shown by the connotations &

denotations as it shows signs and the meanings behind them. It’s done most effectively when it shows mise-en-scene throughout the video including facial expressions to show how somebody is feeling within that specific moment.

Our music video: The Fray – ‘How to save a life’

• Within our music we decided to use the genre ‘Indie-Pop’ as I was familiar with this genre from using it last year and my partner used the Pop genre to create our music magazines.

• This therefore meant that we both have good knowledge and understanding of how we can portray these 2 genres together as a collaboration and make them work well together. In order for us to associate our music video to Indie-Pop we added in conventions. For example, using costume & clothing to give our character an Indie look, which is unique and different.
