Cinematography

More spacious depth of field gives subtle tones of tension between the male family members. (shown above) Because they are upper class they don’t say what they feel as they want thing just to run smoothly. This is a stereotypical representation and shown in other dramas like Desperate Housewives.

Closer depth of field within Myra and Jacqui’s conversation, connoting that they aren’t as concerned about appearance and say what they feel – a trait of one of the lower classes. This is supported by reaction shots showing their aggressive and threatening nature towards one another.

This three-shot is very important as it shows the vulnerability of the groom (Riley) as he turns to his brother and father for advice. However, both know about the secret discussed by Myra and Jacqui in the first scene yet are unwilling to voice it.

Mise en Scene

‘Homey’ feel to décor of the house, as it is well lived in. Excess of props give a ‘cluttered’ feel and contribute to the rushed atmosphere created by the wedding. The costume and posture of the boy shown in the shot above connotes that he is slobby and cares little about his appearance or hygiene, a common representation in the media of the lower class.

Much more formal attire worn by all in this scene, connotes wealth and an upper class family. This is supported by mise en scene in the background such as the sculptures, clean lines of the house and expensive light fittings.

Sound

Dialogue between Myra (mother) and Jacqui (daughter) suggests lower working class.

• ‘common’ Accent

• ‘Backhander’

• ‘marrying into money’

• Non-diegetic sound – such as radio in the background- portrays social realism, and suggests a regular morning routine which is juxtaposed by the occasion of the wedding.

The accent of the characters within the second scene connotes a higher education as they pronounce their words much better. The tones of their voices are much quieter and less harsh than Myra and Jacqui who almost sound like they’re hissing threats to each other as their anger builds.

Editing

Both scenes exhibit a conversation between mother and child, however during the first scene there are more jump cuts during their conversation than in the second scene which has longer takes and less transitions. This connotes that the scene in the lower class family’s home is a lot more stressed and frustrated than in the upper class family’s home which is more tense beneath the surface, shown through a three-shot including all of the male family members which each have something to hide.
