HISTORY OF MUSIC VIDEOS
THE BEGINNING
Modern music videos primarily used as a
marketing device for promoting artist music.
The first music video was filmed mid 1950s
But before then films animators would accompany
music which was known as “visual music” in order to
match the animations.
1900- Edison invents the gramophone in
the USA. This is where we see the first shift
from music as a solely live experience to
recorded audio on various forms of disc.
1927- first sound film, The Jazz singer
1940s: peak period of MGM Hollywood
musical
1940- Walt Disney released Fantasia
which was based on the use of different
pieces of classical music
1960 the scopitone which was a visual jukebox was invented in
France and short films were then produced by French artist,
including Serge Gainsbourg and Francoise Hard to accompany their
songs.
1963: UK’S FIRST MUSIC TV programme, Ready steady go (ITV)
1964- TOP OF THE POPS BEGINS
The Beatles release the film and album, A Hard Day’s night, shot in
black and white and presented as a mock documentary
1975 Queen Bohemian rhapsody
1981 pop clips on Nickelodeon
MTV starts
1983 Michael Jackson: Thriller
1985 VH1 BEGINS
1986: Dire Straits: money for nothing Steve Barron is top video
1987: MTV- Europe launched, broadcasting to 1.6 homes
Peter Gabriel: sledgehammer (Stephen Johnson” wins best director award)
1994: R.E.M everybody hurts (Jake Scott) wins best director award (ANALYSIS ON BLOG)
Launch of VH1 in UK
1999: Fatboy slim: Praise you ( spike jonze|) wins best director award
2001: Launch of MTV Dance
