Hip Hop
History of hip hop• Hip hop music, also called hip-hop, rap music or hip-hop music, is a musical
genre that mainly contains stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping or a rhythmic speech that is chanted. Hip hop was first started by someone called DJ Kool Herc, he moved from Kingston to NY West Bronx. Here, he attempted to incorporate his Jamaican style of DJ which involved reciting rhymes over the dub versions of his reggae records. Unfortunately, New Yorkers weren't into reggae at the time. so Kool Herc adapted his style by chanting over the instrumental or percussion sections of the day's popular songs. This then turned very popular in parties and events so the term ‘rap’ soon came into place as young people liked this and would rap to friends. This is also where the term emceeing came in. the pictures and magazines you see now days differs a lot now as you can see in the pictures, nearly all of them are from the black community and most reflect violence, drugs, weapons, death and threatening or intimidating content, where as this was not the case in terms of where and how the genre of hip hop started, as Kool Herc came from Jamaica and his style differed a lot. There are also a lot more characteristics of hip hop which is represented through the artists, this is known as the hip hop sub culture. For example the way the clothing goes, most up to date hip hop artists have a specific clothe range, for example they are known to wear branded and expensive clothing, or even ‘gangster’ clothes. this is because it reflects what background they come from and etc. the font and house style of hip hop magazines are quite consistent and they contain extreme fonts and colours, such as big bold writing and red coloured font. The names are quite extreme too as they sometimes refer to street slang used by hip hop artists such as ‘stash’
