Hemp Vocabulary

• Overhand Knot: a fundamental knot used to start hemp jewelry pieces

• Knot: a singular tie

• Sinnet: a series of knots

• Drone Strands: hemp strands that are not used to tie, but rather are tied around. Drone strands are generally cut to be a little longer than the desired length of the finished piece.

• Working Strands: hemp strands that do the tying. Working strands are generally cut to be several times longer than the drone strands.

Tie the same knot over and over to create a spiral piece.

Adding Beads

To add a bead to your hemp necklace, just thread it on both base strands (black) and make a knot around it.

Starting Jewelry1. Find the center of your strands (drone and working), and fold them in half.

2. Tie an overhand knot as shown.

3. Leave a half-inch loop just largeenough for your bead orfinishing knot to go through.

Finishing Jewelry

Make your piece of jewelry using theloose ends of the cords,

and finish with your bead or knot closure.

Lark’s Head Knot1. Fold the working strand in half. Place it under the drone strand. The loop should beat the bottom and the ends at the top.

2. Then take both ends and bring themover the drone strand, and feed themdown and through the loop. Pull the endsto make a snug knot.
