What is social realism?

Social realism, also known as socio-realism is a film genre, which portrays a realistic portrayal of British society.

It’s the most ‘typically British’ of all film genres, showing us to ourselves better than any other genre.

Social realism depicts social and racial injustice, economics hardship and other real life struggles of citizens: often making working class activities seem heroic.

Social realism often hybrids with crime, comedy, drama and thriller genres and resemble that of a documentary.

Reasons

I have various reasons behind choosing socio realism as my genre:

• No budget required

• Not many actors necessary

• Locations based in the genres most typical area of choice when filming a movie.

Now that I have a new genre, I’m planning on making it as obvious as possible that its social realism in the first two minutes.

I’m going to be setting scene as urban, with a montage clip of me walking through streets in the first minute, then introduce dialogue with another character in the next.
