Introduction

• Pop music began around about the 1950’s getting inspiration from Rock, it has managed to develop over the years and is seen to be a softer side of rock which generally combines with different elements of music.

• Even though pop is not often associated with a band, the genre is seen as ‘power music’ and features electric guitars, drums and bass. The music's main appeal is to be pleasurable for the listener not to have artistic meaning or depth.

Introduction

• Over many years, pop music has stayed the same and remains the only genre that is seen as the most ‘popular’ genre and has been throughout the years.

Origins• Through out the development of pop music is has been highly

influenced by earlier ‘pop’(popular) music. Vocal harmonies has been drawn from gospel and soul.Instruments from jazz bands, country and rock.

• Orchestration from classical music.Tempo – dance music.

• Recently appropriated spoken passages from rap.

• Pop music has been dominated by the American and (from the mid-1960s) British music industries, whose influence has made pop music something of an international monoculture, but most regions and countries have their own form of pop music

Key Female Pop Solo Artists

• Adele• Know today as one of the UK’s iconic female

pop artist. Adele is recognised for her draw dropping vocals and stunning lyrics

• Adele has broken the record previously held by the late Whitney Houston’s soundtrack to "The Bodyguard" by notching 21 non-consecutive weeks at #1.

• Adele prefers not to perform in front of large audience as she feels conscious and gets stage fright

• Yet again, one of the worlds most famous pop stars. In 2005 Rihanna released her first album Music of the Sun

• Which hit the top ten of the Billboard 200. Rihanna has now produced a total of five top selling albums and is not stopping anytime soon.

• After collaborating with Jay-Z and Kanye West Rihanna has been noticed as part of the illuminati (People claiming to possess special enlightenment or knowledge of something – Google definition ) this was more apparent after her Good Girl Gone Bad Album, as she had more freedom during the production.

• Rihanna has a missive fan base called Rihanna Navy, and her fans like to call her RiRi

Lady GaGa

• Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, also know as Lady GaGa is one of the most famous and recognised female pop artists due to her original music and style; she likes to break the boundaries in both departments and make her songs ‘speak to her fans’. She has sold an estimate of 23 million albums and 64 million singles world wide, in the space of five years! (this certainly makes her the most popular artists of all time).

Lady GaGa

• Influenced by David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Queen

• Lady GaGa wore a ‘meat dress’ to a red carpet event – her reasoning behind it was – one's need to fight for what one believes in, and highlighted her distaste for the US military's don't-ask-don't-tell policy.

Album Art Work

• Most albums are aimed to sell in mass production therefore the album art work is produced to appeal to the eye and doesn’t often have a meaning behind it.

• Most artist have bonus tracks and albums which entice the consumers to spend extra.
