● National Association of School Music○ NASM, founded in 1924, is an organization of schools, conservatories,

colleges and universities with approximately 644 accredited institutional members. It establishes national standards for undergraduate and graduate degrees and other credentials.

● GAMA's Goal○ Document, publish, and maintain a directory of NASM member

institutions where guitar students can earn a bachelor’s degree in music education and learn to teach both studio and classroom guitar.

Education Initiative

● National String Project Consortium○ NSPC is a coalition of 40 college- and university-based String

Projects. NSPC works to increase both the number of qualified string teachers and the number of children playing stringed instruments. Its unique approach to teacher training has earned national recognition.

● GAMA's Goal○ Work with NSPC member colleges to add a guitar pedagogy

component to their existing programs which currently focus only on bowed strings. We have the support of NSPC’s Executive Director, Dr. Eugene Dowdy of the University of Texas, San Antonio, who directs the only String Project that already includes guitar in its program.

● American String Teachers Association○ The national association of teachers of violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar,

and harp, with more than 10,000 members in all 50 states.○ In 2011, ASTA formed its ad hoc Classroom Guitar Task Force to

explore ways the organization could better serve its guitar-teacher members. In 2012, the Task Force was upgraded to a permanent standing Committee of ASTA, led by long-time TGW clinician Glen McCarthy.

● GAMA's Goal○ Work with ASTA’s leadership and Classroom Guitar Committee to

expand the presence of guitar throughout ASTA’s programs, especially its annual membership conference.
