Chinese Calligraphy• Calligraphy is an ancientart of China that uses a brush,Black ink, and paper.• It is known as “the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner.”• Seen here is a word meaning“thank you” in Chinese.

History• The oldest style of calligraphy is Jiaguwen (seen above)

characters carved on ox scapula and tortoise plastrons.• There is also some calligraphy created in 200BC in China

on graphs on old steles using the Xiaozhuan style.• In 220 BC, Qin Shi Huang (the first emperor to rule all

of China) created a set of 3300 characters called the Xiaozhuan cahracters.

• Writing using a brush and paper was also present at the same time, however few copies remain.

Calligraphy• There are also many other typesof calligraphy including Tibetan,Nepalese, and Persian calligraphy;however, they are all very similar.• In the picture shown here, theartist writes a poem in a calligraphyscript that describes the bamboo hepainted to the right.• Calligraphy is a famous and beautifulart of East Asia.
