Men At Work

What images come to mind with that phrase? Depending on your background, it could remind you of your dad opening the bakery in the wee hours or leaving with a briefcase in hand. Your grandpa sitting on a tractor for hours on end or working in his shop that he started when he immigrated. Whether he is a white collar or blue collar worker, we appreciate all the hard work and skills that he provided.

We wish to honor men who are fathers, sons, grandpas, uncles or any mentor who has made a positive impact on our youth and community. In this issue we have a diverse group of guys to showcase. From a Vet from the Vietnam War to a music man, we have them all in Lake County!

It has been a full year with FOCUS and I have enjoyed connecting with local businesses and organizations that care about their community. It has also been an educational year, learning about publishing and editing along with writing to my heart’s content and I am thankful for the opportunity! With that said, this is my last issue and I have appreciated every moment! Summer is here, so get outside and enjoy your local events.

Disney Awards Money to HelpLake County OrganizationLake County residents once again enjoyed the gourmet selection at the monthly Food Truck

Night in Historic Downtown Leesburg.

The 17th Annual Fish Fry was enjoyed by all, with fried fish, hush puppies, cole slaw, corn on the cob, cornbread, and key lime pie being served up. Oyster shuckers were steaming and serving up delicious oysters with all he fixings. Guest enjoyed dancing to the Country Sound of J.B.Pawkett.

The Clermont Downtown Partnership, the City of Clermont, Lake County and Lake Apopka Natural Gas are sponsoring the Downtown “Got Kids” Festival to be held on Saturday, April 27th from 9 am to 2 pm on Montrose Street in historic Downtown Clermont. This year a new event has been added, the decorated bicycle parade. Beginning at 1 pm, children will parade down Montrose Street on their decorated bicycles. Decorations may be of any choice of the participant but must not impede riders vision or working order of the bicycle. Pre- registration is not required, parents of children under the age of 18 will require parent signature to participate. Lineup will be at the corner of Lake Avenue and Montrose at 12:30 pm. To access the lineup area, parents will need to come into the Downtown area via 5th street as Montrose Street will be closed between Lake Avenue and West Avenue for the festival.

The Kiwanis Club of South Lake would like to extend a sincere thank you to BJ’s Wholesale for their donation of the diapers to our diaper drive. District 9 of Florida Kiwanis is conducting a diaper drive and Kiwanis of South Lake member Cathy Bateham contacted BJ’s Wholesale. As you can see from the picture there were several hundred diapers donated. The Kiwanis Club of South Lake meets every Thursday, at Cheeser’s Palace in Downtown Clermont at 7:30 AM. For more information on what we do for our community, visit our website at www.kcosl.org.

New Beginnings of Lake County was among the group of 59 nonprofits and schools districts that received $1.5 million in grants through the Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants program. This initiative from Walt Disney World Resort supports organizations that help build strong futures for children in Central Florida. “To receive this grant again is both an honor and testament to the generosity of our Central Florida community” related Steve Smith, President of New Beginnings. “We all work hard to help those in need and having partners like Disney helps us to extend our outreach”.

A variety of other big-name acts are being pursued. See www.ClermontARC.com for a current list of events.

Summer recreation programs for adults include basketball, volleyball, line dancing and swing dancing.

The Center hosted a wildly successful Jazzfest in the performance hall and a free movie night in the multipurpose gymnasium. Individuals and groups are touring daily with holiday parties and banquets being booked.

Carlos Solis will debut his much-anticipated CD at the Center on Oct. 25 with performances by Grammy-nominated Jerry Bravo and his brother Richard Bravo, who has played drums and recorded with Barry Gibbs, Gloria Estefan and Shakira. The performance will include Carlos Oliva, an Emmy Award-winning recording artist, composer and

“The grand opening was amazing,” said City Manager Darren Gray. “Clermont residents told us they wanted more recreation opportunities, especially for children, and they told us they wanted more entertainment options. The new Center is providing both.”

The performance hall seats more than 1,100 and is Lake County’s largest auditorium. It includes state-of-the-art audio-visual systems, including the ability to webstream performances.

THE MUSIC LOUNGE OFFERS RECORDING STUDIOProfile by Hunter O’Rourke

BUSINESS » PROFILE

LOUNGE AGAINST THE MACHINE

It would be easy to overlook the contributions of—or even the need for—a “Producer” in today’s popular

music. With the ascendancy of inexpensive, professional quality, home-recording software any teenager with a guitar can digitally record themselves from the comfort of their own room! Indeed, the casual listener is all but overwhelmed by mediocre music posted by would-be artists on any number of social media sites. The difference between radio super-stardom and amateur hour—all other things being equal (recording quality, talent, songwriting, etc)—lies in no small part with Producers such as George Martin, Rick Rubin or Jay-Z, just to name a few. Even if you don’t recognize their names, their efforts are a huge part of what makes the songs we’ve been singing along with for the past 50 years so great!

The Music Lounge, a professional recording studio and music store located at 15041 Old 411 in Tavares, is where you’ll find local Producer and all-around music aficionado James Williams. Although he would vehemently deny any comparison to the big-time producers mentioned above, his attention to detail, love of craft, and sense of aesthetic all combine to bring the magic

of art to what is too often thought of as a merely technical craft. In this regard he stands with the best in his profession.

In addition to his role as Producer James also wears the hats of owner, head engineer, mixer, and repair-tech as well as being a musician himself ! All of this, as well as his 13 years of recording experience, make James uniquely qualified to record and produce—with the necessary objectivity—any act that comes his way. The ability to move from genre to genre while keeping each sound fresh and every artist unique is important when his recording schedule for any given week may include such wildly diverse sounds as “Lesbian Hip-Hop”, “Christian Pop Punk”, and “Latin Beach Boys”. Really.

For a flat fee of $25 per hour you can get everything that James and The Music Lounge have to offer. From epic multi-track recording to final mixing in their acoustically tuned control room they have the means to bring your masterpiece to life. Visit www.themusicloungfl.com for all the information you’ll need to get started today or stop by the studio for a tour or just to check out the eclectic array of musical instruments for sale. Rock on!

SUMMER HAIR TIPSSubmitted by Kristin Moulton, Posh Glamour Studio

It’s Spring Break in Florida and that means more time outdoors in the sunshine and hitting the swimming

pool! While enjoying your fun in the sun, remember to protect your skin and your hair from sun, salt, and chlorine damage.

While most people have become more diligent about applying sunscreen to protect their skin, hair is often forgotten.

Here are a few tips for keeping your hair healthy and beautiful:

Before hopping into the swimming pool, go ahead and wet your hair with fresh water. Your hair strands are like sponges and soak up moisture. By presoaking the hair with clean water, you leave less “space” for chemicals to soak into the strands.

After wetting hair, apply a conditioner, a silicone-based serum, or for a natural choice - coconut oil. The product will coat the hair and help to create a barrier to keep slow down the chemicals from soaking into the hair.

Since chlorine chemically bonds to hair and skin your everyday shampoo may not be strong enough to clean your skin and hair properly. We recommend that you use a specialty shampoo designed to get rid of the chlorine and copper which can cause your hair to turn a green color.

When out in the sun, wear a hat! Not only can a hat protect your face from getting too much sun, but will also keep your hair out of the direct sun rays.

Opt for leave in conditioners, styling aids, and hair sprays which have SPF right in them.

(Tip: Make your own UV protection for your hair. Dilute a 2 teaspoons of SPF 25 sunblock in 1 cup of water and put in a spray bottle. Mist the product on your hair throughout the day.)

Most importantly, maintain moisture in your hair. Perform weekly deep conditioning treatments with a product that contains protein or keratin.

AUGUST 7 INNArticle by Heather Graham | Photos by Mark Zinkiewicz

A preserved piece of history combines with modern elegance in this beautiful boutique hotel. The August

7 Inn, nestled just a short walk from the soft sands of the “World Famous Daytona Beach,” was built in 1896. The over 5000 square foot structure was designed as a guest house for the vacation home of original owner James N. Gamble, of Proctor and Gamble Company.

Ironically, the house, which is on the historic register, is now being used for its original purpose of providing a stylish and comfortable retreat for guests to the area.

Owner and Innkeeper, Joe Dirsa, resides on the property which features eight beautiful and unique guest rooms, all with private baths. Several of the suites include whirlpool tubs

Those wishing to have a quiet, intimate night indoors can choose a movie from the dvd collection and have movie night, complete with popcorn, in their room! Breakfast is served each morning and includes a variety of choices, including bacon, pancakes, waffles, muffins, cereals, fresh fruit, breads, coffee, milk, and juices. Guests can enjoy dining in the fancy, formal dining room or on the porch just off the dining room.

As Innkeeper, Dirsa provides the perfect balance of making his guests feel welcomed and pampered, while being completely unobtrusive. Guests are given a key to the main house as well as their private room and

and fireplaces. All are tastefully decorated and have their own theme. The room numbers, as well as the name of the inn, reflect important dates in Dirsa’s life. For instance August 7 is the day he made the decision to purchase the inn. Room numbers reflect other important dates, such as his grandmothers birthday.

Special touches, which make the August 7 Inn stand out from others would include the serene Tranquility Room, where guests enjoy a session in the state of the art massage chairs, with soft music playing. Each room also features an aromatherapy machine and guests can select their favorite scent for their room.

TASTE OF OUR TOWN MOUNT DORA GUIDED TOUR

Submitted by Shelly Gerig | Photos by Janelle WoodyardA DASH OF HISTORY & WINE TO SAVOR!

John Tucker & Paula NeJame Tucker are the owners of this fabulous tour around historic downtown. They both decided

to share their acquired knowledge of the unique town along with a sampling of local fare and wine from the restaurants and wine bistros. This combination is a win-win for both clients and shop owners. Finding some amazing treasures along the way isn’t a bad way to shop while enjoying the scenery.

They share how Mount Dora started from the naming of Lake Dora to the real Dora Drawdy to the Donnelly home that still

stands (it is the Masonic Temple currently). With the town boasting such a rich history, there was plenty to learn along the way. For instance, the town was originally called Roy-ellou in 1800 and changed to Mount Dora in 1883.

HOT SPOTS OF THE DAYMerrill’s Patio Bistro and Wine Bar-Wine Flights for tastings, homemade beer bat-ter, chips and salsa and some amazing wine choices.

Mount Dora Coffee House and Bistro-Live entertainment along with American Idol owner David Willis and wife Olivia give it a homey feel inviting everyone in for a moment or an evening.

Julianne’s Coastal Cottage-one of those fanci-ful shops designed to entice women of all ages to explore while having a tropical drink.

Norm’s Palette Wine Bar & Tapas Bar- Fan-tastic atmosphere to sit and relax. Enjoy a wide variety of wines and artistic styles in this cozy spot. Highlight: Pinot Noir-unusual blend of three pinot’s.Mount Dora Olive Oil Company-A relatively new concept that is sure to delight the senses with over 70 varieties of imported olive oils & balsamic vinegars (that you try over ice cream!).

Cody’s on 4th- Quaint little space for a deli-cious sandwich, hot or cold coffee drinks or a treat in the middle of the afternoon with a friend.

Book your guided tour on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday from 2-5PM. Visit www.mount-doratasteofourtown.com.
