Sexual Reproduction in Plants and Animals

Sexual reproduction is a means for organisms to make "pretty good" copies of themselves

It involves sperm and egg which are produced by meiosis in the male and female reproductive organs

Sexual reproduction also requires fertilization to occur by uniting the sperm and egg

What we already know about sexual reproduction in humans...The male reproductive organs are called

____________ and they produce ____________.

The female reproductive organs are called ___________ and they produce __________.

Fertilization occurs (sperm and egg unite) in the female reproductive system in the ___________.

Let's compare sexual reproduction in humans to that in plants...The male reproductive organ is called the ___________ and it produces _____________ (sperm).

The female reproductive organ is called the _________ and it produces _____________ (eggs).

Fertilization occurs (pollen and ovules unite) in the ____________ of the female part of the plant.

Perfect or Complete Plants: Plants that have both female and male parts (pistil and stamen). These are able to self-pollinate or cross pollinate to produce offspring.

Imperfect or Incomplete Plants: Plants that have either a male part or a female part (pistil or stamen). These plants are able to cross pollinate to produce offspring.

Sexual Reproduction in Plants: Pollination and Fertilization

Pollination = spreading of pollen from the stamen to the pistil

Self- Pollination = the pollen from a flower spreads to the pistil of the same flower

Cross-Pollination = the pollen from one flower spreads to the pistil of a flower in another location

Fertilization = Pollen + Ovules = Seeds

Seed Dispersal occurs by wind, animals, humans, gravity, insects
