Film Noire Pitch
Title of film: Two Red Dollars
The title of the film was chosen because it
relates to the themes in the film. For example
the colour “red” has connotations with blood and
violence. There is also a link to the emotion of
anger, which has connotations with this colour.
Dollars refers to the crime in the film and how
the pursuit of money and wealth leads the
characters into trouble.
Plot synopsis
In 1950s New York, two friends are working as
bodyguards for a crime family. They see things
like murder and extortion as just part of the
job; they have grown up in this morally bankrupt
environment.
Their loyalty to the Mob, and their friendship,
is tested as they see the opportunity to take
control of things and move up in the world.
Opening sequence
In the opening sequence we see the two main
characters Tommy and Joe are with a member of the
family who has told the police information, who
is known simply as “The Rat”. We can see that
this character is nervous from his body language
and anxiety over the group they are waiting for.
Joe and Tommy are incredibly calm throughout this
scene. “The Rat” senses something is wrong and
attempts to run. A gun shot rings out and we cut
to Tommy and Joe walking away with “The Rat”
slumped against the fence. The title “Two Red
Dollars” then appears.
Creative techniques
Creative techniques that we will use in the film
that are common in other Film Noire include
filming in black and white. This gives it a
vintage feel. It is also easier to make the
characters and set look classy and of-the-time in
black and white. Use of shadows is also a common
theme and we shall try to include this in our
opening sequence. This could be used to show the
darkness and fear of living in that world. Canted
angles shall be used to show the characters can’t
escape.
Funding/distribution issues
The film distribution company that we would want
to release the film is Momentum pictures. This
would be ideal as they release a broad variety of
films, with genres stretching from drama and
comedy to horror and documentaries. As our film
would be very different to most films in the
market it would be appropriate for a company who
specialise in releasing films that are unique.
