Here are some examples of film magazines that

have caught my eye. By the end of this

presentation I will have decided what film

magazine front cover I will be constructing, for

‘Fleeting Youth’.

FILM MAGAZINES

Film Magazines are important in the film industry. Not only does it

promote films, but it also entertains those who work in or have an

interest in films and the film industry.

Like other magazines, film magazines often hold exclusive

information about a film, celebrity or something film related. This is

great for the film industry as it promotes the film industry and the

audience are entertained by this information.

Information about Film Magazines

Empire

Empire magazine is one of the most popular film magazines in the world. It usually features A-List Hollywood films, such as

the films above. However, it also features a lot of independent films, such as Scot Pilgrim Vs. The World, as shown in the far

right corner. Each issue is £3.99.

Empire Magazine is published by the Bauer Media Group, who own a chain of popular magazine companies, ranging in

different genres. It is published by Emap, who were brought by the Bauer Media Company in 2008.

It is the biggest selling film magazine in the UK and it is also published in the USA, Australia, Turkey, Russia and Portugal as

well.

It has the usual codes and conventions of other film magazines. The front cover usually features a main character in the

featured film, with a background that fits the genre and style of the film. However it is also unique in many ways as well, in

terms of it’s presentation.

I will consider designing a magazine front cover for Empire as it is popular and I admire certain feature about their lay out. For

example, to reveal some of the contents of the magazine, they use a film reel with pictures of articles that are going to feature

in the magazine.

Total Film

www.totalfilm.com/

Total Film is film magazine that is UK-based, it is published once a month (13 issues a year) and is published by Future

Publishing. Future plc is a media company that was founded in 2006. It is the sixth-largest in the United Kingdom. It

publishes more than 150 magazines in fields such as video games, technology, automotive, cycling, films and photography.

The magazine provides a series of features, including; spotlight interviews with actors and directors, on-set pieces for new

and future releases and an original feature called ‘The Total Film Interview’, which is a six-page in-depth chat with an actor or

director, along with a critique of their body of work.

It has the usual codes and conventions of other film magazines. The front cover usually features a main character in the

featured film, with a background that fits the genre and style of the film. It has a similar front cover layout to that of ‘Empire’

Magazine, however, a lot of the front covers don’t only feature a portrait photo of the protagonist in the film. I admire this, as

it gives you a broader view of what the film entails and is a more creative way in terms of promotion of a film.

There is a recurring theme with the style of and layout of the Little White Lies magazine front cover, and even contents.

Each issue of Little White Lies is £6.00. Even for a monthly magazine, this is a lot and may put people off buying it.

However, the quality of the paper and contents, is more like a book. The magazine goes against the usual codes and

conventions of a magazine. As you can see from the front cover there is no tag line of any sort of, this is because about 1/3

of the magazine is dedicated the main featured film, that is on the front cover.

For some of the front covers, the name of the film is not even mentioned, because it is recognised easily by the audience.

For example in the third example to the right in the examples above, it is clear to see that it’s a feature of the hit film, ‘Tinker

Tailor Soldier Spy’.

The front cover is often an illustration or painted portrait of one of the main actor (in character) that is from the main

featured film, in the magazine. This is difficult to pull off if you are not artistically talented to illustrate the main character of

the featured film. There is a photo editing feature, that allows you to change an image to make it look like it has been

illustrated. However it is difficult to make it look like it has been illustrated.

Therefore I will not be constructing the front cover of a Little White Lies magazine for ‘Fleeting Youth’.

Little White Lies

It was clear to see that Little White Lies was not the sort of magazine to

feature ‘Fleeting Youth’ as a main feature. It was difficult to choose between

Empire Magazine and Total Film Magazine, but Empire is the most popular

out of these two.

Therefore I decided to choose Empire magazine, also Empire magazine has

had Scot Pilgrim Vs. The World. This is a similar genre to ‘Fleeting

Youth’, apart from the fact that Scot Pilgrim Vs. The World is an action film.

Therefore, Empire seemed to be the most appropriate film magazine to create

‘Fleeting Youth’ as a main feature for.

WHY I CHOSE EMPIRE
