LocationI managed to organize a perfect location for our final task: ‘Withdrawn”. This location showed a sense of isolation and was industrial which we thought was a good convention for our thriller genre. Our previous locations were not related with our film, though the chase sequence could be argued that it was, we still did not believe that we had organised the best position for this project. This specific factory had much more relevance and more reason for actually shooting at that location.

Location

Editing Our editing in all previous projects before Withdrawn were not very obvious, and there was not a lot to it. In our chase sequence we merely added a black/white filter and classic cutting. In our preliminary task, it was only cutting and lighting changing. Though in Withdrawn, there were many key aspects that conveyed our film with specific editing conventions. In Withdrawn, we added a dark blue filter, it was subtle but we believed it was very effective and made the film look much more dark and eerie [1]. We also edited shots into jump cuts during dialogue to add to the film's depth [2]. Also to establish a POV of our camera recording Jacob, we made our shot look like the POV of a camera. Some examples will be on the next slide [3].

Blue Filter [1]This dark blue filter is added as well as making our shot more dark through Final Cut Pro, to reinforce the thriller conventions of darkness and in this case doom.

Jump Cuts [2]We used jump cuts through out the dialogue to make sure that not too much is focused just on the dialogue but also on the setting and the situation the hostage is in.

Camera PerspectiveThis POV from the camera's perspective is a nice editing technique to show variety in our film and also emphasizes on the use of the camera. We also added a blur to add the effect that the hostage is in a delusional state of mind

LightingThis film had many bad moments of White balancing issues, and we have tried very hard to make certain that this didn’t not happen in our Thriller Intro (Withdrawn). The white balancing issues made it very hard to watch the film, and we tried decreasing this problem through the use of Final Cut Pro and adding a Black/White filter. In our Thriller Intro ‘Withdrawn’ we had very good lighting, and kept it low key throughout the film, as well as adding a slight blue filter to add to the eeriness and isolation of the factory. I have compared both of the lighting differences in the next side, and it will show you the developed skills of lighting in our film.

Comparison

Lighting ComparisonAs you can see, our lighting and colour in our film are significantly improved as you can clearly see the second shot and it has an effective darkening filter. This was one of our biggest improvements, as Withdrawn was very easy to view and watch compared to the ultra-bright chase sequence. We have also used a more sophisticated filter rather than black and white which makes Withdrawn convey the darkness and isolation a lot more effectively. This darkness helps the audience understand the themes and conventions provided by our film and how it relates with the specific genre of thriller.

Costumes and Make-up

Costumes and Make-upIn the previous comparison you can see that the costume in our preliminary task had zero effort as we were merely wearing our school uniforms. This couldn’t convey any messages and an audience would find it more difficult to understand the character. Though in Withdrawn we made a great effort, as I wore full black to emphasize on the darkness of this intro and my villainous role, as well as Jacob immersive appearance as he was wearing casual gear to promote the sense that he was quickly picked up and ‘withdrawn’ from his normal life into being a hostage. The makeup implies that he has been beaten in order for information to be extracted from him. This makeup looked very professional and made the film look much more horrible and serious.
