Thrillers are essentially about the battle of justice vs. injustice where often there is a price to be paid for the conclusion of the story. A thriller is a film of suspense with a plot structure that reinforces the elements of gamesmanship and the chase. It is build around the use of red herrings, enigma’s and McGuffin’s.

Thrillers can be a variety of story lines including spy based, tales of geopolitical crisis, legal thrillers, medical thrillers, or domestic thrillers. Commonly thrillers progress with a growing sense of threat or danger and the excitement of pursuit.

Thriller films are normally shown from two characters points of view. The first being that of the protagonist, which involves the audience more in events and creates empathy for the character. Or the story is occasionally told from the view of the villain, which can lead to empathy for the villain also at their twisted understanding or perhaps disturbing past that has led to the present. Although it can also create a sense of guilt..

Events in the storyline enable the film to progress, and allow the audience to second guess what will happen next. In many films this will be wrong so adds to suspense. The dialogue in thrillers never contains a complete explanation of events or plot, to give it pace, and maintain the mystery, which is essential in building up suspense.

Our thriller film includes the key conventions of thriller films. Our film is full of suspense which according to my audience research is one of, if not the most important theme that must exist in ANY thriller film. Our thriller film has a enigma involved, through the use of the photograph as it is used to develop the plot and to create a sense of mystery as to who this person is, why they are involved with these types of people etc, which is another key convention of a thriller film.

We incorporated suspense into the thriller film by not reveling the victim until the very end, making the audience wonder and begin to think about who the hostage is. We also use a pace and shot title sequences to build the tension. It breaks up parts of the film which also increases the intensity levels and suspense of the film.

•In our thriller film we took some slight

inspiration from the film Hit man. As our

film has a hostage situation we wanted

to think about how past thriller films with

hostage situations have carried out

certain shots, to give the person power

and demonstrate their authority over the

situation, and by looking at the Hit man

film we could see several example of

how to do this effectively and accurately.

The main thing we got out of watching

the film was that to give the person the

most power and authority, shoot them

from a low angle, mid shot. By

including part of the victims in the shot,

it put across the message that the

persons power and authority is superior

as they tower over the victim,

dominating them.

Our thriller film is original and offers diversity as it

demonstrates the power struggle between men and women in

today’s society which would not be a original story line

associated with the thriller genre. We have a inventive titles

sequence which is not commonly seen in thriller films.
