Content of Magazine

I analysed various magazines throughout the research process and listed

various elements that professional magazines incorporate. Specifically I

looked at the contents page of ‘Q’ magazine and thought that adapting

the band index would be a good Idea for my own contents page of my

magazine.

I also found that magazines are used to promote sales for various companies

so I decided to incorporate my own advertisements on my front page and

contents page. I tried to relate the advertisements I incorporated to the

genre for example my Noah and the whale advertisement which are a band

highly associated with the genre.

I found that most magazines within my research also used interviews with

famous music artists such as noel Gallagher. Within my magazine I created

an interview with a fictional artist associated with the genre to attract the

target audience and entice them to read the magazine. I also made a

preview interview at the bottom of my contents page which would make the

reader what to look further in the magazine for the full interview.

“The ways in which my product represents social groups”.

I represented the social group of mainly boys who are around the ages of

14 – 21. The reason I feel the gender of my social group is mainly boys is

because of the gender of bands and artists I have mentioned in my

magazine. Examples of these include; Noel Gallagher, Liam Gallagher,

Morning runner, Noah and the Whale, Sum 41 and The Kooks are all boy

artists/bands.

I feel that I have constructed this representation by the different elements I

have used such as male artists within the images in the magazine and also

the costuming style (Mise-En-Scene). An example would be the male

image on the contents page as I have used a male artist who is dressed

like an indie rocker with a guitar which should hopefully attract the social

group of musicians and guitar players.

“What Institution would distribute my product and why?”

The research I have carried out around media institutions has enlightened

me on what institutions within the media world distribute and produce music

magazines. If I was to pick an institution to distribute my magazine it would

probably be ‘Bauer Media Group’ who distribute magazines such as ‘Q’ and

‘Kerrang!’

Bauer Media group is run by its headquarters in Hamburg, Germany and their

titles amounts to 38 million magazines weekly. Bauer operates in 15 countries

world wide and were founded in 1875. The industry of the conglomerate is

specifically publishing and broadcasting as they have their own subsidiaries

of Bauer Radio.

The reason I would choose this institution is because the magazines that are

associated with the company are magazines which are of the same genre

as mine such as Q and Kerrang. They are a wide-based global company

and I feel that my magazine would fit well into the company.

Technologies that I used

The main software I used to produce my magazine was Microsoft

PowerPoint. I thought this was a suitable piece of software

because it is relatively easy to use with some knowledge of ICT skills

and it can produce a well produced magazine. I could easily scroll

through the pages I had created and importing and editing

pictures was easy. Although it is used for slideshows I have

adopted some of its features and used it in a different and unique

way.

For the images I created I used adobe Photoshop to edit each

shot I used on my magazine. I changed various elements such as

different image colours, contrasts and backgrounds. I also

changed the format of the pictures so they were in the correct

format to use in PowerPoint.

I have used my Sony digital camera to take the images used in my

magazine and simply used the SD card to upload them to my

school computer and add them to Photoshop. I have learned a

lot of useful technology skills like using Photoshop successfully for

the first time. I feel my use of technologies has been good.

Improvements from Preliminary task

I feel that the steps I have taken since my preliminary task have been massive.

I have had a better understanding in all aspects of the task such as layout,

colour schemes, fonts styles and content of magazines. I feel that I improved

by carrying out better research and looking at a wider range of professional

magazines.

My Music magazine is in a different league to my school magazine and I feel

it is clearly obvious throughout the process of my music magazine I have

gained a much better understanding of magazines in general. The images

look much more professional on my music magazine as I used a Sony digital

camera rather than an iPhone.

My Music magazine looks much more professional than my school magazine

as I have used a much more magazine natural layout. The school magazine

looked more like a newsletter or leaflet with all the cover lines too neatly

boxed in. I also thought their wasn’t enough on the front cover of my school

magazine and it looked too bear and needed to include more cover lines

and maybe an advertisement. The font styles are more relevant to the genre

with my music magazine and have more of a purpose than my school

magazine
