Protagonist

The protagonist is the main character in a story. Often this person is referred to as the “good guy.”

Monsters Inc.

The protagonists from Monsters Inc. are Sulley and Mike Wazowski.

Antagonist

The antagonist is the person or thing that works against the protagonist. This is often the “bad guy” or “bad thing.”

Monsters Inc.

The antagonist in the movie is Randall Boggs.

Conflict

The conflict is the problem or struggle the protagonist faces.

Monsters Inc.

The conflict in the movie is that Boo has come through to the monster world and Mike and Sulley are not able to easily get her back to the human world.

Resolution

The resolution is the solution to the conflict.

Monsters Inc

The resolution in the movie is that Sully and Mike have to fight off Randall, Mr. Waternoose, and some bad luck to save Boo.

Plot

The plot is the events that occur in the story.

Monsters Inc

Mike and Sulley are monsters that generate power for Monstropolis by capturing the scared screams of children (Somebody).

By accident, a small child gets through their defenses and is in their city. They need to find a way to get her back home (Wanted).

Randall Boggs and Mr. Waternoose want to keep Boo in Monstropolis because they think they need her screams (But).

Mike and Sulley stand up for what they believe in and they fight to get Boo home (So).

Setting

The setting is when and where the story takes place.

Monsters Inc

The setting for Monsters Inc. is Monstropolis. There is no definite time of the story.

Climax

The climax is the most exciting part of the story.

Monsters Inc

The climax of Monsters Inc. is when Mike and Sulley are running through the power plant trying to find the right door to send Boo back home.

Theme

The theme is the moral or the lesson the author is trying to tell you.

Monsters Inc

The theme in Monsters Inc is that you can’t be afraid of what you don’t know. When you get to know someone, you see around the differences they may have.

Mood

The mood is the feeling the story gives you.

Monsters Inc

The mood of Monsters Inc. changes as the story continues. At first we are sad for the scared children, then we are worried about Boo, then we are angry with Randall, finally we are happy when Boo gets home.

Narrator

The narrator is the person who is telling the story.

It can be a character in the story or it can be an unspecified person who is able to see everything and hear everything.

Monsters Inc

There is no specific narrator in the movie. We are only able to hear what the characters say, not what they think.

Twilight

An example of a narrator in a story is Twilight. The entire story is told through Bella (the main character).
