Newton Faulkner – Hand Built by Robots

Page 2: Digipak Analysis

Newton Faulkner is a folk rock singer. The quirky design of the front cover to his album highlights this genre.

The main image shows eye-catching artwork of various characters, including a soldier, a knight and a pirate, standing atop the hand of a robot. This image links back to the title of the digipak, ‘hand built by robots’.

The writing present on the cover of the album informs us of the name of the singer and the title of the digipak as this is what a potential buyer is most interested in knowing.

The title of the digipak is white in colour, standing out against the blue background. Its font style is uneven, non-block capitals, reflecting the folk rock genre of the album. The title has a relaxed border, drawing attention to it and, once again, highlighting the digipak’s genre.

The background of this digipak shows the peaks of snowy mountains, surrounded by clouds and the sky. This background makes both the title and the artwork present on the digipak stand out. It also emphasises the quirky nature of both the album and the singer.

The background of the back cover of the digipak is the same as that of the front cover. The image of the astronaut is also repeated.

The production information about the digipak is written in small lettering and placed at the bottom of the back cover as potential buyers are interested in the artist and their songs. The production details are not relevant to them.

The artist’s web address is larger than the production details as fans may want to access this and this is another way in which the artist can be marketed.

The back of the CD cover includes the track names, the amount of tracks on the CD, their running order, an image, colour and production details, covering most conventions of the back of a CD cover.

The track names and their running order are shown on the back cover and are written in the same font style as that on the front cover and use the same border, once again reflecting the folk rock genre of the artist and their album.

On the spine of the digipak the name of the artist and the title of their album is shown. This is for practical reasons so that the album can be easily located by fans when it is on a shelf.

The characters shown on the front cover of the album are repeated here, creating a consecutive image throughout the digipak.

The images of the characters shown on the front cover and the spine of the digipak are repeated on the CD within. This consecutive image is continued.

The images are blue in colour against a white background. This is the same colour scheme used on both the front and back covers, showing white writing against a blue background.

The image of clouds and sky is also continued, being the background against which the CD is set. The folk rock genre of this digipak is once again highlighted.

On the back of the booklet within the digipak, there are photos of Faulkner and his production team, allowing fans to feel more connected to the artist.

The cloudy background and white border previously seen throughout the digipak is continued on the back cover of this booklet.

Inside the booklet, the lyrics to each of the songs present on the album are printed, once again, allowing fans to feel more connected to the artist and his work.
