Complication involved in the transportation of horses to long distance and ways to tackle them
Horses need to be transported long distance for a number of
reasons. Sometimes their owners are moving or they may be
needed at another location for some show or event. Long
distance travel may prove very stressful and tiring for the horses
and is reason of concern for most horse owners. Travelling long
distance can adversely affect the performance of the horse as
they get exhausted and physically drained. They regular routine
at the stable is hampered and their body starts showing sign of
that in different ways. Thus if necessary the task of Horse
transport needs to be undertaken with utmost care and with the
help of professionals in this area.
Research on this issue has shown that travelling in a truck makes a horse as exhausted when it walks the
same distance. Long distance travel generally requires horses to travel in a truck or trailer for more than
8 hours. International horse transport may even take a much longer period. Horses have their own
sleep pattern and diet requirements which adversely get effected during the travelling period. In such a
situation most horse are not able to perform well.
Apart from that horses easily get dehydrated and need to be given a proper proportion of food and
water. Sleep deprived horses are not able to eat well which then leads to depletion of their energy level.
Another possible upshot of long distance transportation of horses is that they may suffer from “shipping
fever” which is a bacterial infection of the lungs and chest and is fatal in nature.
To avoid any of these from happening horse owners must give the task to experts in this field who have
prior experience of handling horses. Proper care must be taken to keep the horses well hydrated by
giving them ample water with their food. There should be breaks at regular intervals during the travel
which offers the horses a time to relax. Getting the horses physically a week prior to the travel helps in a
big way.
Once the horses have arrived at the place of transport they must be properly fed with hay along with
abundant water. Give them enough rest before they look revitalized and normal like before. The travel
should be well planned so that it allows the horses to take breaks to rest at regular intervals and also
gives them a breather when they have reached the destination. Thus proper care and handling of horses
during long distance horse Transport helps in avoiding a number of mishaps.
