TECHNOLOGICAL CONVERGENCE – FISH TANK

Fish Tank uses technological convergence when they record with there mobile phone which makes it seem for the audience that it is from there perspective.

TECHNOLOGICAL CONVERGENCE – ILL MANORS

They use a mobile phone to suggest that that is the way it has been filmed 2 times in the film. One time was at a party and the second was during a fight. This creates an exciting shot and shows what’s going on from the mobile phones

perspective.

You would be able to listen to the Ill Manors soundtrack and watch the movie on the same device (iPhone, tablet, laptop).

TECHNOLOGICAL CONVERGENCE – SKYFALL

Skyfall uses technological convergence in a variety of ways. One way is that audience can purchase online from amazon instant video to watching on Netflix. Aswell as this you can watch it on smart phones and tablets at any place or time.

There was a connection with Coke Zero as there TV advert is a Bond theme. The viral video filmed in Belgium which captured ‘real men’ going to a coke machine and getting to the platform in less than 60 seconds, then if you suceed you get tickets to the premiere. It was aimed towards at the male audience. The video had 3.5 million views in 3 days through social networking.

Blu Ray is available for audiences.

ISSUES WITH NATIONAL AND LOCAL AUDIENCES – FISH TANK

Fish Tank is aimed specifically to the British audience, there are many reasons for which. One of which is that British audience can relate to the film as they can see it from there perspective. Whereas an American audience don’t see the youth being pursued as troubled, crime issued teens.

The location of the film is in Tilbury (Barking) in London. This is shown as a location filled with estates and youths taking over them. This is suitable for the British audience because they know that these locations exist within London, whereas audience in America will just see London as a big wealthy city without the under developed locations of London.

The producer decided to use endless amounts of offensive language in the film to the extent that its acceptable at an age 15. Whereas the words that are used such as cunt excessively will not be accepted in an American 15 classification film.

ISSUES WITH NATIONAL AND LOCAL AUDIENCES – THE HANGOVER

The Hangover has extremely famous actors within the film especially are Bradley Cooper as Phil, Ed Helms as Stu, Zaxh Galifianakis as Alan, Justin Bartha as Doug. Therefore this can reach out to audiences all over the world. However Bradley Cooper and a lot of the other characters were made famous from The Hangover and then after the film he was the main character in American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook and many more.

The location in which the film is filmed in is Las Vegas. Vegas is an extremely famous location for gambling and for people to go and spend a lot of money. Therefore world wide audiences will watch this in order to get a feel of Las Vegas and see the hype through 4 men enjoying there time out there.

The language within the film is strong but isn't as strong as Fish Tank. They say certain words a lot such as shit and fuck. Whereas you don’t see them saying ‘cunt’ as much as they did in Fish Tank. This is because in America it isn't as socially accepted. If the producers want the film to be world wide and in the Hangovers case they do, they need it to suit there audience in different countries.

PROLIFERATION OF HARDWARE AND CONTENT FOR INSTITUTIONS AND AUDIENCES – FISH TANK

Proliferation of Hardware:

• In Fish Tank they released the movie on DVD as well as in cinema. The movie in cinema was released first as the audience could see it in an improved experience. Then if they enjoyed it they could but it on DVD later that year. This is beneficial for both the audience and the institutions because the institutions will be making more money and the audience will be gaining more entertainment. DVD is good for Institutions because it’s a second gaining point and another try to be successful and it is beneficial for audience because they can watch it multiple times. Cinema is good for institutions because it gives them a chance to improve there profits and the audience gets n improved, emotional experience. The film was most probably shot on digital.

Proliferation of Content:

• In Fish Tank they rarely use any popular actors. The main female actress was found simply arguing with her boyfriend, this shows that they wasn’t looking for existing famous actors just someone who suited the role. This was good for the institution because it means the actress wasn’t expecting good pay, however a big actor/actress can promote the film and be the one thing that makes the audience go to see it. This would be a negative thing for the audience because there would be no one to go and see it deliberately for. The actual storyline of the film would intrigue the British audience.

• OTHER FILMS RELEASED IN SEPTEMBER 2009 – Fame, Love Happens, Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs,

Page 27: Case studies

PROLIFERATION OF HARDWARE AND CONTENT FOR INSTITUTIONS AND AUDIENCES – ILL MANORS

Proliferation of Hardware –

Within Ill Manors the film was released in cinema then like Fish Tank the DVD was released shortly after. However the difference with both films is that Ill Manors also had an album that was used for promotion. Plan B the writer of the film wrote the album to be released with the DVD as well this was brilliant promotion and for the audience it was good too because they got to experience a lot of what went on the film. The album was also good for the institutions as well because people may have brought the album without seeing the film and this may influence to buy the DVD at the same time.

Proliferation of Content –

As advertised a lot on the DVD, Cinema billboards and CD’s Ben Drew (Plan B) was the producer of the movie. Even though Plan B isn't even in the movie, fans would still be intrigued to buy the movie purely just because they know he has written it and that he is the voice over throughout. This is extremely beneficial for the audience as the fans will be intrigued however there is no big actors in the film which may be a weakness. Plan B being the producer is good for the institutions because it means higher profit.

Films released in June 2012 consist of Ted, Magic Mike, Snow White and the Huntsman and many more.

Page 28: Case studies

PROLIFERATION OF HARDWARE AND CONTENT FOR INSTITUTIONS AND AUDIENCES – THE HANGOVERProliferation of Hardware –

In the Hangover they firstly released the movie into the cinema and then onto DVD on October 8 th 2013. Like the previous case studies this is the usual thing to do because it creates a second opportunity to create a bigger profit for the movie.

Proliferation of Content –

The Hangover is an extremely popular film consisting of popular actors too. Bradley Cooper especially got extremely famous from this film opportunity. The film was filmed in Vegas which automatically attracts the older audience to go and watch the movie.

Other moves that were released at this time were

MEDIA OWNERSHIPMedia Ownership is the process in which an increasing number of companies can own media outlets. Being able to debate and explore the advantages and disadvantages of large conglomerates and the smaller independent companies.

Film London Microwave and Film Londons micro budget feature film-BBC Films produced Ill Manors. Sony and MGM produced Skyfall and as everyone knows Sony is a large international conglomerate.

Major Companies like Sony and MGM

Advantages

Production - can take risks when making the film, don't need to collaborate to secure funding and can be more ambitious with the film for example have bigger stars and more special effects.

Distribution -  More money which means they have better links to different companies, they use synergy and cross media convergence to promote the film.

Disadvantages

Exhibition - The film has to do well because the companies involved would've spent a lot of money and they need to earn it back.

Independent Companies like Film London Microwave

Advantage

Production anD Exhibition - They can take risks due to that there is less money involved within the making of the film.

Disadvantages

Production - Smaller budget which means they will be less ambitious and often has to secure the extra funding and the finance.

Distribution - Has to be targeted as there is less money to spend on marketing the film, The film is expected to make less revenue (at box office) and also cant withstand losses with Box Office Returns.

Page 31: Case studies

SKYFALL MEDIA OWNERSHIP

• Most obviously Skyfall is produced by a large international conglomerate.

• This is obvious as in the film everything is taken to a new level. One way is the famous actors that they have used such as Daniel Craig and many other familiar faces. In comparison to Ill Manors you wouldn't’t see famous actors within because the budget is just too low for that.

• Another way is the special effects used for the title sequence. It is all based under water which is a big risky way to present the titles however it worked really well and this was most probably an expensive process.

• Skyfall also bought different areas for that day of shooting so for example they would shut down a tube station and this would be an expensive power.

• There were 80 suits made for James Bond, to show how many different occasions in which they was needed.

• Heineken Lager paid 28 million dollars for Skyfall to use there products in there film.

Ill Manors would not have a lot of money to spend on marketing as there budget was low, however they did market through the CD which was cross media convergence and synergy.

ILL MANORS FACTS

He made a short film called Michelle with his own money.
