Studio Winners
Time Warner – Warner Bros. not only leads box office so far in 2013, but Man of Steel performing well sets up a Batman/Superman tie-up in 2015 that should will come with enormous expectations.
Universal – Despicable Me 2 continues striking box office gold, outperforming Disney’s Monsters University. Also, Fast & Furious 6 continues on the series’ recent winning streak and performed extremely well in international markets.
Studio Losers
Sony– The timing of Sony’s dismal summer is ill-timed as billionaire investor Dan Loeb pushes for an entertainment spin-off, arguing Sony’s studio unit is inefficient. After Earth and White House Down were notable flops. Overall, the studio is running in sixth place so far in 2013 in spite of bringing in more domestic box office than any other studio last year.

The schedule for 2014 is already firming up. Here are a few key movies to be on the lookout for:
May 2, 2014: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Sony)After a dismal summer 2013, Sony will rely on Spider-Man to boost its fortunes next summer. 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man grossed $752 million world wide.
May 23, 2014: X-Men: Days of Futures Past (Fox)2011’s reboot X-Men: First class grossed just $146 million domestically, but was well reviewed. The on pressure on X-Men as a franchise will be amplified as this summer’s The Wolverine underperformed in its opening weekend.

May 30, 2014: The Good Dinosaur (Buena Vista/Disney)Pixar ventures into the world of dinosaurs with its newest animated feature.
June 20, 2014: How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Fox)The first movie in the series was beloved by audiences and critics on its way to a world wife box office of nearly $500 million. If the reception to Despicable Me 2 this summer is any indication, this sequel could score big.
June 27, 2014: Transformers 4 (Paramount)The last Transformers grossed $771 million overseas on its way to $1.1 billion globally. Will be the odds on favorite to take the crown of 2014’s biggest box office.
