The Objective of The Task

• The objective is to gain understanding of WHAT the titles are in an opening sequence and HOW and WHEN they are applied.

• My Target – Research and complete

analysis of at least 5 opening film titles.

My Research of Film Titles

• In films, the opening credits are shown at the very beginning and normally list the most important members of the production.

• Now they are usually shown as text superimposed on a blank screen or static pictures, or sometimes on top of the action.

• There may or may not be accompanied by music. • When the of a film opening credits are built into a separate sequence of their own,

the correct term is title sequence.• Opening credits since the early 1980s, if present at all, identify the major actors

and crew, while the closing credits list an extensive cast and production crew. • Since the early 1980s opening credits , if present, identified the major actors and

and, largely, the cast, although over time they tend to repeat the cast.• Up until the 1970s, the closing credits of films usually listed only a reprise of the

cast members along with their roles, or even simply just said "The End", requiring opening credits to normally contain the details of the people involved in the film.

Common opening credits order

• (NAME OF THE STUDIO)– Name of the studio that is distributing the film and may or may not have produced it.

• (NAME OF THE PRODUCTION COMPANY)– Name of the production company that actually made the film or name of the investment

groups or companies that financed a substantial part of the film. Usually credited as "in association with" or "A (studio name) production."

• (PRODUCER NAME) PRODUCTION or/and (director only) A FILM BY (DIRECTOR NAME)– Director's first credit, often "a film by XY or "a XY film".

• STARRING– Principal actors, (Sometimes the stars' and director's credits will be reversed, depending on

the star's deal with the studio; sometimes, as in the Rodgers and Hammerstein films, or as in all three film versions of Show Boat, or, as in many of Disney's films, the title of the film will be shown before the names of its actors; sometimes, as in many of Cannon's films, the name(s) of the principal actor(s) will be shown before the name(s) of the producer(s), i.e. "The Cannon Group presents X in a Golan-Globus production of a Y film").

• (FILM'S TITLE)– Name of the film.

• FEATURING– Featured actors.

• CASTING or CASTING BY– Casting director.

• MUSIC or MUSIC COMPOSED BY or ORIGINAL SCORE BY– Composer of music.

• PRODUCTION DESIGN or PRODUCTION DESIGNER– Production designer.

My Research of Billing (filmmaking)

• Billing: A performing arts term used to refer to the order and other aspects of how credits are

presented for plays, films, television, or other creative works.

• From the beginning of motion pictures in the 1900s to the early 1920s, the moguls that owned or managed big film studios didn’t want to bill the actors appearing in their films because they did not want to recreate the star system that was very prominent on Broadway at that time.

• The order in which credits are billed generally signify their importance. For example, in films, the first is usually the motion picture company, followed by the producer. Next, depending on his/her standing, the director may be granted an extra, prominent credit; this practice began with directors such as Otto Preminger or William Wyler in the late 1950s.

• The major starring actors generally come next, then the title of the movie and the rest of the principal cast. The following production credits also usually form part of the main billing:
