Ambrose was happier now, but Bernice and Gracie were doing nothing but fight. It should have been a honeymoon period, but they were squabbling over everything.

Bernice confided in her best friend, telling her everything Gracie had said and accused her of. Teresa saw what the problem was straight away. Gracie had once dumped Bernice for being too frivolous and sleeping around. Reading between the lines of Gracie’s recent complaints told her that Gracie thought Bernice would be more mature following their wedding. All Bernice needed to do was show she had grown up.

So Teresa gave her friend a quick wardrobe makeover. Some new clothes that were a little less tight, less revealing…

Bernice was the same age as Teresa, who had teen children and grey in her hair. She didn’t need to change who she was, just learn to love herself as an older person. Gracie might not want her squeezing herself into outfits made for teens.Gracie loved her, perhaps she should start loving herself.

Gracie apologised to Bernice for their fights the moment she got home. She admitted she was worried they had married too quickly, that Bernice might regret being forced to settle down. They had a long chat and reaffirmed how they felt. Bernice assured her wife she was happy with herself and with their relationship.

Megan’s relationship was also going well. Allain seemed to be really into her. Plus, she received her first payment from Edward for her help.

It was a pretty exciting moment, and she knew exactly what she would spend it on.

The Bailey family’s garden was long gone, the fence sold on as firewood. Warren and Teresa had abandoned their dream of being self-employed in case the mysterious blight returned, as it had done elsewhere. But Megan was determined. She used the money from Edward to buy blight resistant seeds.

Page 7: 8.42

Megan Bailey, an interesting conundrum. Just starting out as a career criminal with a high performing business brain she’d been honing since childhood… spending her first pay cheque on plants for her parents to lift their spirits.

Page 8: 8.42

Malika Williams was certainly confused by her. Megan was smart and funny, did well in school and came from a nice family. But she hung out with a boy who had quit school completely and Malika had seen her sneaking home after curfew several times.

Page 9: 8.42

Malika didn’t tell her new police friends about Megan breaking curfew though. She would give her the benefit of the doubt. But if she ever discovered anything more serious… well what else was she training so hard for? When she aged up she would be a teen police cadet. And then she would join the police. She hoped Megan wouldn’t give her a reason to ever arrest her.

Page 10: 8.42

She liked the other children she had met as a junior cadet. They were better friends than Megan had ever been.

Page 11: 8.42

Megan was out when Annette called round to talk to her. James answered the door and out of the blue asked if she wanted to hang out with him instead? He had no idea where his sudden burst of confidence had come from.

Page 12: 8.42

She did stay though. And they talked for some time. It started a bit awkward, reminiscing about when James would hang out with her and Megan as a child, but never speak. Then they talked about their lives at boarding school, something they had common. Then the time flew by.
