2. 3 events dealing with the music of the 90s 3. Smells Like Teen Spirit Event 1: Nirvana formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987, and became known in 1991. Cause 1: The band has sold over 30 million albums in the United States alone. Cause 2: Just months after Cobains suicide, the band continued to sell 5 million albums and won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. Effect: Nirvanas fame and exceptional music sales set new records and helped the genre to prosper. 4. When I Come AroundEvent 2: Green Day was formed in 1987 in Berkeley, California.Cause 1: Their music is very political and speaks about numerous world issues.Many of our youth care about the world, and issues of war are definitely on their radarscreen.Cause 2: The music also emphasizes nihilistic views, the total rejection of establishedlaws and institution.Effect: Many youth listeners were exposed to world issues and new ideas, sparkingestablished political statements & new opinions in the younger generations. 5. All the Small Things Event 3: Pop punk rock band, blink-182 was founded in Poway, California, in 1992. Cause 1: Blink 182s simple and straightforward music focuses on the struggles of coming of age during adolescence, with a flavor thats irreverent, crusty, profane, sexually perverted and bizarre. Cause 2: The first member of the bands original lineup is Tom DeLonge, a self-proclaimed outcast, who gives hope to the average and not so average teenager. Effect: The music and message of Blink 182 is a loud and powerful voice in past and current youth culture. . 6. Anthem Part 2 - Blink-182 Impacts Political Many youth listeners were exposed to world issues and new ideas, sparking established political statements & new opinions in the younger generations thanks to Green Days music. Blink-182s songs, such as Anthem Part 2, drew attention to injustices that are supposed to be prevented in the Constitution, such as youth discrimination. 7. Come As You Are - NirvanaImpacts Social The music and message of Blink 182 is a loud and powerful pop musicvoice in past and current youth culture. Nirvanas lead singer, Cobain, expressed his support for manyminorities at the time, such as women and homosexuals, inspiringmany others. 8. Feelin This Blink-182 Impacts Economic Nirvanas exceptional music sales set new records andhelped the genre to prosper. Blink-182 was known as the top selling pop-punk band ofthe 1990s. 9. American Idiot Green DayInfluence on todays society Green Day takes a stand with their music on important issues, for example American Idiot is an anti war anthem against actions of President George W. Bush that many youth strongly disagreed with. Nirvanas Kurt Cobain is a music icon and is famous for his music and suicide. 10. Dear Maria, Count Me In All Time LowInfluence on todays society In 2011, The New York Times asserted that no punk band has been moreinfluential that Blink 182, and stating that even as the band receded after their2005 split, its sound and style could be heard in the muscular pop punk of FallOut Boy, or in the current wave of high-gloss Warped Tour punk bands, like AllTime Low and The Maine. 11.
