Your work responsibility is to monitor the loading and delivery of the raw materials to your factory to the production team.

You have been diligently working to provide the raw material in time. In fact you have been awarded for your accountable work

The production team have acknowledged the receipt of the right quantity of raw material.

It has come to the notice of the management that the production is falling short of the final quantity consistently and have been asked for an explanation.

The production team is clueless as the production system is completely automated and there does not seem to be a window where someone can steal the products being produced.

Business wants to find out the culprit as soon as possible as it is

encountering loss. But no one seems to understand -

Who is stealing their profit?

Solving the case

Number of trucks you dispatched every day – 10

The weighbridge at the production was calibrated as per the weighbridge at the loading centre

Some known facts -

The thief -

The weighbridge at the loading centre had developed 5% error since the last time calibrated with certified weights. Since then the weighbridges at the factory (production) and loading centre were calibrated to give equal reading. 5% error in loading was equal to 200Kg. In a month the total loss was 6000 kg Though no one got to identify the difference due to the error the final production fell short when calculated for shipping,

A truck scale or a weighbridge is a platform where the truck is driven in to measure its weight. It is to note that the same truck would weigh different if the truck is not placed on the platform correctly. The truck would not weigh correctly if it is more towards the edges. That is called corner difference and that is an error.

Make sure that the error is nullified and so that the truck weighs the same if placed on the platform be it edges or

in the middle.

How Position steals the weight

The two major factors that steal the weight where maintenance is a challenge – Dirt and Water. If your pit has water or the load cells are covered with dust, it is very likely that the weight-thieves are right down there and needs to be removed.

Keep the weighbridge pit clean and do not let water log there. A good idea will be to have a schedule

maintenance of your weighbridges.

At times the organization calibrates their weighbridges based on an other weighbridge to keep a uniformity. But what it does is that it passes the error from one weighbridge to another. Do remember - Nothing hurts business more than a process that is out-rightly wrong.

The efficient practice is to get your weigh bridge calibrated with proper weights and get certified.

Go for pre calibrated digital load-cells as that will reduce the effort of getting standard weights

What is feel good calibration?

The habit of matching the weight of the load of the trucks leads to multiple re-calibration of the weighbridge by the person doing the weight reading. This is a nasty practice in business and causes the maximum amount of weight theft.

Put anti-theft feature within weigh bridges. This mechanism not only prevents the re-calibration but also

monitors the re-calibration (attempts) made.

Why to be aware of multiple re-calibration?
