Well Intervention Any operation carried out on a well during or at the end of its productive life, which alters the state of the well and/or well geometry, provides well

diagnostics, or manages the production of the well.

What is Coiled Tubing?

“Continuously-milled tubular product that is

straightened prior to being inserted into the wellbore and is recoiled for spooling back on to the reel.”

Page 5: Well intervention

Application of Coiled Tubing? Mechanical

Cementing Fishing Perforating Logging Scale removal (mechanical) Cutting tubular (mechanical) Running a completions straddles for zonal isolation Drilling Setting a plug or packer

Work over (Pumping)

Removing sand or fill from a wellbore Fracturing/acidizing a formation Unloading a well with nitrogen Gravel packing Cutting tubular with fluid Pumping slurry plugs Zone isolation (to control flow

profiles Scale removal (hydraulic) Removal of wax Hydrocarbon or hydrate plugs

Coiled Tubing Unit:The coiled tubing unit is comprised of the complete set of equipment necessary to perform standard continuous-length tubing operations in the field.

Injector Head To provide the surface drive force to run and retrieve the CT

The equipment that performs these operations is grouped into the following systems:

1- Drive and brake system2- Chain assembly3- Traction and tension system4- Guide arch system.

StripperThe stripper provides the primary operational seal between pressurized wellbore fluids and the surface environment❑ It is physically located

between the BOP and the injector head.

❑ The stripper provides a dynamic seal around the CT during tripping and a static seal around the CT when there is no movement.

Blowout preventerThe BOP is used to contain wellbore pressure. A CT BOP is designed specifically for CT operations

Blind ram - seals the wellbore when the CT is out of the BOPShear ram - used to cut the CTSlip ram - supports the CT weight hanging

below it Pipe ram - seals around the hanging CT

The four BOP rams, from top to bottom and their associated functions are:

Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA):Coiled Tubing BHA includes: ConnectorsCheck ValvesDisconnectsCirculation valveNozzlesQuick Connects.

Page 17: Well intervention

ConnecterThe main function of a

connector is to attach the CT string to various down hole tools. It must

mechanically hold and seal on the CT string and provide a threaded connection to connect down hole tools below it

Page 18: Well intervention

Check valves

The function of a check valve is to prevent wellbore fluids from entering the CT string, while allowing fluid pumped through the CT string to enter the wellbore.

Page 19: Well intervention

Disconnect toolsA disconnect in a CT BHA

provides a means of releasing from the lower BHA in a controlled manner

Page 20: Well intervention

Circulation valve

A circulation valve in a CT BHA provides a means of opening circulation ports in a controlled manner. Circulation ports can be used to provide additional flow area (and therefore allow higher pump rates) in many types of applications

Page 21: Well intervention

Quick connects

A quick connect is a tool designed to assist with making up tool strings, where it is difficult to rotate the tools to engage the threads.

Page 22: Well intervention

Centralizers

Centralizers are fitted to or are included in a CT tool string to help keep the tool or nozzle away from the tubular wall; that is, the
