HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE

MOST BASEMENT AND FOUNDATION WATER DAMAGE IS CAUSED FROM HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE. HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE OCCURS WHEN THE SOIL AROUND AND BENEATH THE BASEMENT GETS SATURATED WITH EXCESS MOISTURE FROM RAIN, MELTING SNOW, OVER-WATERING, OR CONDENSATION FROM A/C UNITS. THIS WATER PUTS PRESSURE AGAINST THE WALLS OF OUR BASEMENT AND WILL EVEN START TO PUT FORCE AGAINST YOUR BASEMENT FLOORING. WITH CONTINUOUS HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE BEING PUT ON BASEMENT WALLS AND FLOOR, THEY START TO CRACK AND ROT BECAUSE OF THE PRESSURE ACTING AGAINST THEM. UNTREATED CONCRETE IS NOT ABLE TO PRVENT THE HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE AND THUS FORMS LEAKAGES.

CONCRETE PROPERTIES

• CONCRETE IS GENERALLY USED AS A BUILDING MATERIAL• IT IS BRITTLE, AND HAS MANY CRACKS. THE JOINTS IN CONCRETE ARE NEVER 100%. • PERMEATION FACTOR IS LOW IN CONCRETE. IT ABSORBS A LOT OF WATER DURING

CONSTRUCTION.• HENCE TREATING CONCRETE BASEMENTS IS A NECESSITY IN ORDER TO AVOID CRACKS

AND LEAKAGES.

THREE WAYS WATER ENTERS INTO THE BASEMENTS.

HAZARDS OF A DAMP BASEMENT:

A DAMP LEAKY BASEMENT CAN CAUSE:• TERMITES AND INSECTS• MILDEW AND MOLD• DRY ROT• WEAKENING OF SUPPORT BEAMS• RUSTING FURNACES• CRUMBLING OF WALLS• LOSS OF VALUABLE LIVING SPACE• ELECTRICAL HAZARDS• HEALTH HAZARDS• DETERIORATION OF PROPERTY VALUE

REASONS FOR WATERPROOFING BASEMENTS:

• TO PROTECT OUR BUILDING’S INTERIOR FROM WATER DAMAGE

FOR MOST OF THE TIME DURING CONSTRUCTION, THE INNER PARTS OF YOUR BUILDING EXPOSED TO THE ELEMENTS. THINGS LIKE THE FRAMES, THE FOUNDATIONS, WIRING AND INSULATION, AS WELL AS THE FLOORS. BASEMENTS IN PARTICULAR ARE VULNERABLE TO MOISTURE SEEPING WITHIN THEM. WATER SOAKS THROUGH THE SOIL AND QUICKLY LEAKS THROUGH CRACKS AND FISSURES WITHIN THE CONCRETE, WHICH CAN LEAD TO FLOODING AS WELL AS MOLD AND MILDEW. DURING THE WINTER, THIS MOISTURE WILL THEN FREEZE, CAUSING IT TO EXPAND AND FORCE THE CRACKS OPEN WIDER AND MAKING THE PROBLEM WORSE. EVENTUALLY, THE ENTIRE BASEMENT COULD BE RENDERED UNSAFE.
