Introduction & History:-

• A Thermal Power Plant converts the heat energy of coal into electrical energy.

• Coal is burnt in furnace and in a boiler which converts water into steam. The expansion of steam in turbine produces mechanical power which drives the alternator coupled to the

turbine.

• In thermal generating stations coal, oil, natural gas etc. are employed as primary sources of energy.

• The foundation stone of G.N.D.T.P. at Bathinda was laid on 19th November 1969, the auspicious occasion of 500th birth anniversary of great Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

• Selection of the city because of :

1) Its good railway connections for fast transportations of coal.

2) Availability of canal water.

Main and Auxiliary Equipments:-

Coal Handling Plant:-

Wagon Unloading Coal Carrying Conveyor

• The function of coal handling plant is automatic feeding of coal to the boiler furnace.

• A thermal power plant burns enormous amounts of coal.

• A 200MW plant may require around 2000 tons of coal daily

Page 9: thermal power plant - GNDTP Bathinda

Pulverising Plant:-

• coal is pulverised i.e. ground to dust like size and carried to the furnace in a stream of hot air.

• Pulverising mills are further classified as:

1. Ball mill2. Impact mill3. Contact mill

Page 10: thermal power plant - GNDTP Bathinda

Boiler:-

• A boiler or steam generator is a closed vessel in which water under pressure, is converted into steam.

• Boilers are of two types-

1. Fire tube boiler2. Water tube boiler

Page 11: thermal power plant - GNDTP Bathinda

Turbine:-• A steam turbine converts heat energy of steam into mechanical energy and drives the

generator. It uses the principle that steam when issuing from a small opening attains a high velocity.

Page 12: thermal power plant - GNDTP Bathinda

Ash Handling Plant:-

• Ash is the residue remaining after the coal is incinetered.

• In a thermal plant coal is generally used as fuel and ash is produced as a byproduct of combustion.

Page 13: thermal power plant - GNDTP Bathinda

• The percentage of ash in coal varies from 5% in good quality coal to about 40% in poor quality coal

• Power plants generally use poor quality of coal , thus amount of ash produced by it is pretty large.

• A modern 2000MW plant produces about 5000 tons of ash daily

• The stations use some conveyor arrangement to carry ash to dump sites directly or for carrying and loading it to trucks and wagons which transport it to the site of disposal

Page 14: thermal power plant - GNDTP Bathinda

Fly ash can dispose off in two ways:-1. Dry ash System2. Wet ash System

1) Dry Ash System:-

The main parts of dry ash handling system are:-I. Electrostatic PrecipitatorII. Vacuum PumpsIII. CompressorsIV. Bag Filter TowerV. Transfer HopperVI. Surge HopperVII. DenseveyorVIII. Silos

Page 15: thermal power plant - GNDTP Bathinda

Cooling Towers & Ponds:-

• Typically a 2000MW plant needs about 1500MGallon of water.

• Most plants use a closed cooling system where warm water coming from condenser is cooled and reused.

• Cooling tower is a steel or concrete hyperbolic structure having a reservoir at the base for storage of cooled water
