Introduction Design Process Safety Difficulties Solution Video Conclusion Q & A
Rationale Behind The Selection (1)
Polypropylene (PP) -- The main body
● Thermoplastic polymer
● Non-toxic ---> applicable for canned food
● Low density and handy ---> easier for elderly to hold
● Normally tough and flexible ---> prevent cracking
12[1,2]
● Good resistance to fatigue ---> able to withstand slightly dash many times
● Higher yield strength ---> pulled by the steel ---> not deform
Design Process

Introduction Design Process Safety Difficulties Solution Video Conclusion Q & A
Stainless-Steel
● Non-oxidizable ---> can be used for a long time
● Austenitic steel ---> tough in low temperature---> high strength produced by work hardening---> the most weldable
● Ferritic steels ---> lower corrosion resistance and only weldable in thin sections
13
Rationale Behind The Selection (2)
[3,4,5]
Design Process
ME3S01 - Engineering Design for the Community
Introduction Design Process Safety Difficulties Solution Video Conclusion Q & A
● Duplex steels
---> Weldable with care
● Martensitic and PH steel---> less weldable

Introduction Design Process Safety Difficulties Solution Video Conclusion Q & A
Rationale Behind The Selection (2)
● Austenitic steels : the most formable of all the types
---> able to undergo a high degree of deep drawing or stretch forming
when we construct the extended part
● Ferritic steels : not as formable
● Duplex, martensitic and PH grades : not particularly formable
● Non-magnetic properties
---> add the small strong permanent magnet

Rationale Behind The Selection (3)
Wood
● light material, but strength is quite high
● Remove static electricity ---> safer
● Higher sound isolation ---> movable component ---> Reduce noise when operating
● Durable material ---> always use

Rationale Behind The Selection (3)
Wood
● High adaptability to decorate ---> make the can opener more beautiful
● Reusable, recycle and recoverable material
● Inexpensive

Individual Learning Experience
LI Wai Kin Casper I had experienced what service learning is and means for me. Understanding other’s need and serve them with our own ability is a meaningful experience. I got reflections through meaningful service learning. I also realized to be a responsible person to our community.
Furthermore, I know more about the design process which is out of my profession. Understanding the client context is an important step to identify the problem and the goal we need to be achieved for the whole process. Working on conceptual design can bring out the best solution among different kinds of idea. After finalize the design solution, prototype testing is the key for adjusting the design solution details. Size or different dimensions can be decided with support and feedback.
The selection of materials affected the durability and user experience with the final product. The whole design process is a problem solving process in improving our service client’s needs.Cooperating with other helps to solve the difficulties that I cannot solve by myself. And, I understand that different people have different skills, different skills produce a better solution.

After this service learning subject, I found that many elderly need help and their needs are different. For example, our clients only need a can opener which is suitable for her. Therefore, it is beneficial for us to participate for this service learning class to help them. I also know Ms. Lai had participate some activities in the centre to help those people in handicapped. In light of this passion, I think I have to spend time helping the needy in the future. In addition, I have learned more about mechanical engineering. It requires us to design a product which need some skills such as 3D modelling, material selection, it is difficult for me to handle it especially in the short time. I know I have many inadequacies, I will also put a lot of effort to finish it and make it better in the future. Therefore, I will spend my semester breaks on exercising the software by using the sources from this subject and other websites. I am looking forward to gaining some knowledge on the software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorld before graduation. During the site visit 3, we will give the final product to our client. I hope our clients will give us a satisfactory feedback.

After studying service learning subject, I can get a lot of treasure experiences, learn a lot of different knowledge and software skills.
I can make new friends with other department students and older people. It can broaden my social network and improve my communication skill. After the service period, I become more patient and consider about other people feeling.
In this subject, I faced some difficulty and challenge. For example, I did not have mechanical engine knowledge and the course study period is short. Thus, I need to study by myself and have a good time management. It enhances my self study, problem solving and time management skill.

Through this service learning, it is my first time to cooperate with engine department. I gained knowledge about mechanical engineering and touched with 3D modeling skills. It helps me to explore and get to know different profession apart from design.
I felt delightful in contributing service to our target with my professional. Our team design and solved the client problem. From understanding the client’s context to product delivery, our client Ms Lai will have a better user experience with the modified can opener. By understanding part of the society needs, it brings my heart to care more about the society and people around me.
In the design process, the problems that we solved more or less were difficult. I had improved my problem solving skills with problems never faced before. The teamwork and communication with teammates are very important. We discussed together and divide our work, in order to solve the problem. I am pleased to have such great teammates.
