The presentations will be provided by three of UCSB’s most exceptional serial entrepreneurs, John Bowers, Rod Alferness, and Umesh Mishra. The Dean of the College of Engineering will introduce and kick off the program. Keynote – John Bowers, Professor and Serial Entrepreneur John E. Bowers is Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency and a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also cofounder of Terabit Technology (sold to Ciena), Aerius Photonics (sold to FLIR), Calient Networks and Aurrion. His research interests are primarily concerned with silicon photonics, optoelectronic devices, and optical switching. Bowers is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the IEEE, the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the American Physical Society. Introductory Speaker – Rod Alferness, Dean, College of Engineering Rod C. Alferness, former Chief Scientist at Bell Labs, became the Richard A. Auhll Professor and Dean of the University of California, Santa Barbara, College of Engineering on September 1st, 2011. Alferness is world-renowned for his work on integrated optical device switching technology and networks. His research has been central to the development of fiber optic communications networks. Alferness is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and of the Optical Society of America (OSA). He received the 2005 IEEE Photonics Award and the 2010 OSA Leadership Award, and has served as President of the OSA and of the IEEE Photonics Society. Umesh Mishra, Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department atthe University of California, Santa Barbara where he has been a director of severalGaN research centers. Umesh the CTO and co-Founder of Transphorm. Prior to co-founding Transphorm in 2007, Umesh co-founded Nitres Inc. in 1996 – the first start-up company to develop GaN LEDs and transistors. Nitres was acquired by Cree in2000. Umesh was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2010 andreceived the IEEE David Sarnoff Award for “The Development of Gallium Nitride

Electronics”

Moderator – Leslie Edwards, PhD, UCSB Director of Corporate Business Development

Leslie Edwards, PhD, is the Director of Corporate Business Development for theCollege of Engineering and Math Life and Physical Sciences at UC Santa Barbara.Leslie provides corporations with insightful access to campus faculty, students,strategic planning for heightened corporate visibility, and other key tools for successbetween industry and the university. She has an extensive background in relationshipbuilding between UC Santa Barbara and corporations. Before coming to UC SantaBarbara, Leslie spent a decade working in the biotech industry and has experience

with corporate research, product development, and management. She has been the Manager of divisionpharmacology and toxicology at a biophysics company, Miravant, worked at Amgen as an Associate Scientistwhen there were less than 130 employees, and as a consultant in the field of regulatory toxicology.
