INTRODUCTIONA large amount of electrical energy is wasted in speed breaker through friction, every time when vehicle passes over it.

So electricity can be generate using vehicle weight (potential energy) as an input.

So this small step to improve this situation.

Very new and innovative concept

Non –Conventional Energy Source.

This Makes Use Of WASTE OF ENERGY TO generate ELECTRICAL

ENERGY.

DIFFERENT MECHANISMS INVOLVED

There are three basic mechanisms involved in power generation using speed breakers

Roller mechanism

Rack and pinion mechanism

Crank shaft mechanism

ROLLER MECHANISM

Here roller ,sprocket-chain arrangement is used. Ratio of speed of roller to dynamo shaft is 1:5Whenever a vehicle passes over this hump the roller fitted in between a speed breaker and some kind of a grip provided on the speed breaker rotates.This in turn rotates the shaft of D.C generator and hence produce electricity.

These are the few disadvantages of roller mechanism

Extensive maintenance required.

Might cause collision, eg. a car comes at 100kmph and passes

over this hump due to which the hump gains a speed of

90kmph,at the same time if a bicycle at 20kmph passes over the

hump it cause collision.

Their efficiency is less compared to other mechanisms.

RACK AND PINION MECHANISM

Here the reciprocating motion of the speed-breaker is converted into rotary motion using the rack and pinion arrangement .The axis of the pinion is coupled with the sprocket arrangement .The axis of the smaller sprocket is coupled to a gear arrangement. Finally the gear arrangement with free wheel is coupled with the generator .

CRANK SHAFT MECHANISM

Whenever the vehicle goes on the speed breaker , the speed breaker goes

downward.

So the potential energy is converted into kinetic energy.

Here whenever the vehicle passes over the hump,the hump goes down.

This cranks the flywheel present below which has low inertia and it rotates at high

speeds.

This in turn drives the alternator which generate the electricity.

HOW MUCH POWER CAN BE GENERATED ??

“A vehicle weighing 1,000 kg going up a height of 10 cm on such a rumble strip produces approximately 0.0098 kilowatt power. So one such speed-breaker on a busy highway, where about 100 vehicles pass every minute, about one kilo watt of electricity can be produced every single minute. The figure will be huge at the end of the day,”

ADVANTAGES

Simple construction, mature technology, and easy maintenance.

No manual work necessary during generation.

Energy available all year round.

No fuel transportation problem.

No consumption of any fossil fuel which is non-renewable source of

energy.

Pollution free power generation.

India is a very vast country and has a broad network of highways, the rural

areas beside the highways can be supplied with the street lightning

electricity.

It gives low electrical output.

Initial cost of implementation is high.

Regular maintenance is necessary.

Achievement of proper balance between speed and torque is

difficult

The springs used gets worn frequently and hence need to be

regularly replaced .

FUTURE SCOPE

Such speed breakers can be designed for heavy vehicles, thus increasing input torque and ultimately output of generator.

More suitable and compact mechanisms to enhance efficiency.

A survey on the energy consumption in India had published a pathetic report that 85,000 villages in India do not still have electricity. Supply of power in most of the country is poor. Hence more research and development of technologies are needed in this field. This energy can be used for the lights on the either sides of the roads and thus power that is consumed by these lights can be utilized to send power to these villages.

It may also be used for light vehicle also.

The existing source of energy such as coal, oil etc may not be adequate to meet the ever increasing energy demands. These conventional sources of energy are also depleting and may be exhausted.

These are some non-conventional methods of producing energy. This project is a one step to path of exploring the possibilities of energy from several non-conventional energy sources.
