MY THREE KEY MESSAGES1. Nigeria cannot have Sustainable Economic Development without Efficient Infrastructural Development, which is the solution to the pervasive poverty and insecurity ravaging our population by total dependence on other nations technology development and production capacity.

2. The total neglect of applied research, near zero investment or allocation to science, Technology and innovation is our greatest security challenge today not militancy or economic woes.

3. Any Success achieve in infrastructural development using foreign Technology, Foreign Men, Material and Machine is temporary – meaning that Nigeria will continue to remain a captive or battle ground of foreign goods and services.

INTRODUCTIONNigeria, just like any other nation hopes and aspires

to be strong economically. Certainly, attainment of sustainable economic prosperity constitutes a huge challenge to both the developed and developing countries. Therefore, diverse strategies are adopted by different countries to achieve economic as well as social prosperity.

Maintaining and improving our Quality of Life today offers many new challenges and opportunities. Engineering infrastructure suggests such singular opportunity for achieving sustainable economic prosperity, through delivery systems.

Delivery Systems are the tools, machinery, equipment and human capacity, which are keys to infrastructure development.

CHALLENGES FACING ENGINEERING INFRASTRUCTURE IN NIGERIA

Lack of political will to develop a grand vision for infrastructural development for the nation. Lack of maintenance culture. Lack of participation by all stake holders in EI policy making process.

Underfunding of Basic and Applied Research and Development.

The non-recognition and hence none utilization of the few relevant manpower within the country. Poor linkages between Rand D institutions, universities and the industries. Difficulties in commercializing Rand D results, as well as absent of funds.

Absence of a technology culture in the society

Very difficult and inconsistent economic environment for engineering practice and absence of incentives.Poor power and other utility supplies.

ELECTRICAL POWER SUPPLY

The independent power producers are now building power stations; some have been commissioned while the others are in various stages of completion.But then what percentage of Technical, Managerial and Material component is truly local to guarantee local ownership and sustainability?

Our government started reform of the down-stream sector; allowing the participation of the private sector in the down-stream sub-sector of the economy. What are the true local components of local contents if the current drive emerge successful?

WATER SUPPLY

Nigeria has invested huge resources with varying result in potable water provision and for irrigation. What percentage of these from bore hole drilling rigs, the pumps, construction of dams and related facilities is local to guarantee sustainability?

CONCLUSION

The future of Nigeria and Nigerians cannot be left at the mercy of fluctuating chances – through dreaming but purposeful STI policy and diligent implementation

Engineering Infrastructure Development is a scientific endeavour – where quality of input and viable process guarantee desired output and outcome.

Strong political will, patriotism and stable policy irrespective of change of dispensation are essential for prosperity.

Engineering, Science and Technology that develop home grown Infrastructure is key to realization of developmental aspirations of Nigeria.
