Introduction

We are given an assignment that involves three modules, which are Construction Technology 1, Building Materials, and Measurement 1 by writing a report for our construction site visit.

The construction site visit was organized on Thursday 19th November 2015. Lecturers have told us about the safety precautions which we have to obey by wearing safety helmet, proper clothes and shoes. We gathered at Taylor’s University Lakeside campus around 8am and go to site visit by bus.

The construction site is located at Seksyen2A, Antara Gapi, Hulu Selangor, Selangor. This project is to construct 96 unit twin house (40’ x 60’). The contractor of this project is Siak Siong Construction Sdn Bhd.

The aim of this site visit is to expose us for a better understanding about what we had learnt in the classroom such as the construction process, construction equipment and those building materials and technology on site.

Technical Observation

1.Process of Constructing a Pad Footing So for this report, we are required to study on pad footing. For

the process of constructing the pad footing, at first the professional site surveyors will position the location and the size of the pad footing. And then they will stake out the footprint to mark corner for the building’s pad footing.

After that, excavation process starts. The depth of the excavation is determined by the structural engineers. For the project of the site we visited, the excavation depth of the pad footing which still in progress is 1.5m.

After the excavation, pour a layer of lean concrete on it. Then, the workers start to build up the formwork according to the size and the drawing staked. Add some spacer blocks so to lay the reinforcement bars with accurate spacing. Next, lay the main rebar and the transverse rebar. Then, erect the reinforcement for stump and tied the reinforcement bars with links. Moreover, add more ties to the formwork. Lastly, pour the concrete in.

The formwork moulds the fresh concrete that will be poured in, which is in the stage normally viscous, to the shape specified in the drawing. Generally, the formwork is to be removed after hardening of the concrete placed. To be noted, the concrete used is Grade 30.

2.Material Used to Construct a Pad Footing

Concrete Grade30, is the main material used for this pad footing. Concrete is a composite material composed of aggregate bonded together with fluid cement which hardens over time. The grade of the concrete means the concrete compression resistance at 28 days. The proportion for the concrete grade 30 is 1:2:4. This method is showing the amount of cement, sand and course aggregate in the concrete.

For the formwork which will be removed after the hardening of the concrete, material used is timber. This is the most common material used for bracing members to the form face. Besides that, timber formwork can be constructed at lower initial cost due to higher availability and cheaper production cost.

The most important part is the reinforcement bar, it is a common steel bar that is hot rolled and is used widely in the construction industry. Steel is strong in tension at the same time being ductile enough to be shaped or bent. Moreover, the interaction between reinforcement steel and concrete is free of disadvantages in terms of chemical and physical disadvantages.

Conclusion

After visiting the site, I can truly understand the situation of the construction site. I realized that working at the construction site is much more difficult that we used to think, as the terrible hot weather and the existence of danger.

This site visit gave me a chance to have a better understanding about the basics of the construction process. Besides that, I have witness the usage of construction equipment and the mechanical plants. The most important is, I have explored myself to identify various types of building materials and technology on site.

In campus, we just learn the knowledge based on slde or books that given by the lecturers. So site visit is totally different as you can witness and feel the real life working in the construction site.

I do really appreciate to have the chance to pay a visit to the construction site. I wish to have more practical knowledge to gain more experiences as to prepare myself in my future work as a QS. In overall, it was a great experience for me.
