Introduction The Self Inflating Tire system is an invention of CODA DEVELOPMENT, a company based in Czech Republic. The patented SIT solution offers a major advance in solving tire pressure concerns. Self-inflating tyres are designed to constantly maintain tyre pressure at the proper level. Self-inflating systems are designed more for the slow leaks and for optimizing performance and safety than for keeping a vehicle moving on a tyre that will no longer hold air. Self-inflating tyres allow a vehicle to adjust to the current terrain for ideal performance and safety in those condition. Research into reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as well as improving on the road safety.

Tyre Inflatation BasicsAbout 80 percent of the cars on the road are driving with one or more tyres under inflated. Tires lose air through normal driving (especially after hitting pot holes or curbs), permeation and seasonal changes in temperature. Tyres lose one or two psi (pounds per square inch)each month in the winter and even more in the summer. When tyres are under inflated, the tread wears more quickly. This equates to 15 percent fewer miles which can be driven on them for every 20 percent that they're under inflated. Under inflated tires also overheat more quickly than properly inflated tires, which cause more tire damage.

Statistics show that tires that are under inflated by as little as 2 psi reduce fuel efficiency by 10 percent.

Self Inflating SystemsThe SIT system is based on highly reliable and proven peristaltic pump principles. It uses the weight and motion of the vehicle to inflate the tire as needed, sourcing air from the outside atmosphere. The whole system consists of only two components – a tube chamber functioning as a peristaltic pump for the tire and a pressure management device to control the inflation.A Peristaltic PumpThe peristaltic tubing is located longitudinally between the rim and the tire wall and copies almost the whole perimeter of the rim. As the tire moves against the road this closure pushes the air contained inside the tubing into the tire and simultaneously it pulls outside air back into the tubing. As a result, the tire is inflated with the contents of the tubing with each wheel revolution until it reaches its desired pressure.

Advantages Reduced tyre wear Increased fuel economy Increased overall vehicle safety Providing sufficient airflow to the tire with minimal

leakage Pressure adjustment based on increasing vehicle

speed Pressure adjustment based on increasing vehicle load Adaptability for recreational use (inflating rafts, sports

balls, etc.) Implementation of interactive display Creation of universal design for aftermarket use

Disadvantages Too many components More costly than the conventional tires. Requires more maintenance. Heavier than general vehicle. The user must have the basic know how of the relation

between the pressure and road condition.

Future Scope The main beneficiaries of this advancement in

technology that will allow for tyre pressure to be adjusted for driving.

Reduction in tire wear and an increase in fuel economy; both of which will result in saving money in the long run.

The reduction in tyre disposal in landfills and decrease the rate of consumption of natural resources.

Both tire manufacturers and the petroleum industry will be negatively affected by this resulting design.

The demand for their products will decrease as tires last longer and fewer replacements are needed.

It is plausible to say that society as a whole will benefit from the resulting design.

ConclusionSelf inflating tyres will become very common in the near future. It increases the safety and the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. The development of self inflating tyres increases the safety, comfort and other performances of vehicle. The driver will be able to adjust the pressure depending upon the desire driving mode, comfort, sporty over obstacle. So “self inflating tyres are the future tyres”.
