SEISMIC DESIGN CRITERIA&
DESIGN REQUIREMENTS FOR BUILDINGS
MYANAMR BUILDING CODE 2016
MYO ZIN AUNGShip Design Lab.Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering
MYANMAR Building Code 2016 is based on:
• Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures 7-05 (ASCE7-05)• Modify to be suitable with Myanmar’s land,
environment, available resources, natural disasters such as:• Flooding• Landslide• Cyclone• Earthquake, etc.
References
•Concrete Building - American Concrete Institute 318-05 (ACI 318-05)•Steel Building - American Institute of Steel
Construction 303-05 (AISC303-05)•Brick Building - International Building Code
2006 (IBC2006)
Criteria for the Design and Construction of Buildings Subject to Earthquake
• Earthquake loads are based upon Post-Elastic Energy Dissipation in the Structure• Because of this fact, the requirements for design, detailing,
and construction shall be satisfied even for structures and members for which load combinations that do not contain earthquake loads indicate larger demands than combinations that include earthquake loads.
Seismic Site Classes• Classes A, B, C, D, E, F• Based on – • Spectral Response
Accelerations• Site soil properties (Solid
Shear Wave Velocity in Top 100 ft.)• Important Factor
(Occupancy Category)
Maximum Considered Earthquake Ground Motion for 1 Sec Spectral Response Acceleration at 2% Probability in 50 Years with 5% Critical Damping, Site Class B
Sagaing fault
Maximum Considered Earthquake Ground Motion for 0.2 Sec Spectral Response Acceleration at 2% Probability in 50 Years with 5% Critical Damping, Site Class B
Seismic Zoning Map of Myanmar for Alternative Seismic Design Procedure
For Seismic Class C through F
• “Geotechnical Investigation Report” to be submitted• An evaluation of the following potential
geologic and seismic hazards: • Slope instability; • Liquefaction; • Differential settlement; • Surface displacement due to faulting or
lateral spreading, etc.
Criteria for the followings
• Member design, connection design, and deformation limit• Continuous load path and
interconnection• Connection to supports• Foundation design• Material design and detailing
requirements• Stress limit in the moment frames• Diaphragm Flexibility, Configuration
Irregularities, and Redundancy, etc.
