3 Inventors’ Club — University of Peradeniya

1. Introduction to Peradeniya Inventors’ Club

Peradeniya Inventors’ Club is one of the most active clubs in Faculty of Engineering. This club was

formed in with the primary objective of bringing out the innovator inside young engineering minds.

The events of the club carefully selected to enable young inventors to think differently and apply

the knowledge and theories in practice. We firmly believe an engineer should always be a practical

person. This amity of innovative engineers will provide the background to get the essential practical

knowledge and necessary experiences to fortify the engineering career.

Among activities of the Peradeniya activities, the grand event organized by the Inventors’ club is

the ‘INNOVATORS’ competition. The sole intention of this competition is to bring out the innovative

skills of newcomers to the faculty of engineering. The event is carried out for three days with five

different themes. The competitors are given a task and asked to complete it within the time given,

and finally they are evaluated by a panel of judges from the academic staff. Last year’s competition

achieved a high level of success with 300 participants from the first year students.

The members of inventors’ club are looking forward to make it even better, this time which will

surely open path to open up the creative engineering minds.

2. Introduction to “INNOVATORS 2015”

The Peradeniya Inventors’ Club will hold the “INNOVATORS” competition for the fourth consecutive

time in collaborated with the Engineering Students’ Union. As in previous years the competition will

be opened for the freshers of the Faculty of Engineering. The prime motive of Innovators 2015 is to

guide the young men and women who made themselves eligible for the field of engineering

towards innovation and lead them to gain hands on experience in the basics of engineering relevant

to different disciplines. They will be encouraged to step beyond the simple trial and error methods

and utilize mathematical modeling, computer assisted simulation, model testing etc. which will

modify their mind set for the coming years of engineering. The competition will be a happening of

three days’ time in the Faculty premises where the participants will be assigned into groups and

presented with five projects

Designing and building,

1. A Water Rocket

2. A Line Following Robot

3. A Bridge

4. An Energy Efficient Hearth

5. A Programmable LED Cube

The participating teams will be provided with all the necessary resources to proceed with their

projects so that there won’t be any prior preparations for the participants. The participants will be

grouped at the commencement of the competition according to their preference of projects and

the availability of resources.

Second day morning will be allocated for the researching and planning of the project. Workshops

and tutorial sessions will be held within the day by the members of the academic staff and past and

present club members. These workshops are intended to enhance the knowledge of the

participants regarding the subject and provide a ground level understanding about the mechanisms

and machines used.

The second day evening will be allocated for the fabrication of the builds, testing and

troubleshooting. The finals of each competition will be held during the afternoon of the second day

followed by the closing ceremony and awards distribution.

A club member will be allocated for each group as a supervisor for the whole course of the

competition. They will be responsible for the provision of all the requirements for the group

namely, safety, resources for the projects, tools, meals, transportation, accommodation etc. They

might assist the team to finish their project on time.

-THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS A WORLD OF ENGINEERING MARVELS- Innovators 2015

5 Inventors’ Club — University of Peradeniya

As in the previous year, a Wi-Fi zone will be put up for the competitions and the participants will be

encouraged to research using the internet via their personal devices or devices provided from the

club.

All the facilities required for the participants; food, accommodation, transport to residential halls,

sanitation, first aid and medical care will be provided at the club’s expense.

The evening will be reserved for the final competitions, and prize giving for the competitors for

their performances. Security, health, and personal wellbeing of every competitor will be assured by

the club.

3. Aim

The Innovators competition is targeted on the freshers entering the Faculty of Engineering, to give

them a first-hand experience of basic engineering aspects and also the concept of team work, time

management, crisis handling and most importantly familiarize and understand the fellow

colleagues. The whole innovators 2015 project is carefully planned with the motive of imprinting

the above aspects in the lives of the competitors with a hope of nourishing a better, confident and

capable engineering undergraduate and in extent a reputed professional engineer.

Organizing committee will provide 500g of Spaghetti packet to each group (an

additional100g of spaghetti will be provide on request), hot glue guns and 100g

of glue sticks. Each bridge will be loaded by a person from the group that built

the bridge. During the competition, bridges will be loaded until they collapse.

A bridge’s “score” will be determined by dividing the maximum weight held (the

bridge must hold the weight for at least ten seconds) by the weight of the bridge.

Awards will be made for the top three bridges.

Resources supplied

1. 500g of Sanremo No.05 Spaghetti packet

2. Hot melt glue gun

Rewarding Points

Bridges will be inspected and weighed by the judges prior to testing to

ensure all bridges comply with the rules. Bridges failing inspection will

be disqualified. Each bridge will be placed by the contestant on two

level, smooth-topped platforms with an open space of 600mm between

the platforms. All contestants must accept the loading conditions as

provided.

The load will be applied to the two hooks attached to the bridge that

are located near mid span of each bridge. The load will be progressively

increased until failure occurs. Bridges may not be touched while

loading.

• Strong and Stableness o The Bridge will be subjected to an

increasing load hanging middle of the span until its failure.

The proportion of the self-weight of the bridge to its ultimate

capacity of load will be used to evaluate the performance.
