4G, an acronym for Fourth-Generation Communications System, is a term used to describe the next step in wireless communications.

4G is not one defined technology or standard, but rather a collection of technologies and protocols aimed at creating fully packet-switched networks optimized for data.

4G networks are projected to provide speeds of 100 Mbps while moving and 1 Gbps while stationary.

It will provide a comprehensive IP solution where voice , data and multimedia can be given to user on “anytime , anywhere” basis.

1.Support for multimedia services like teleconferencing and wireless internet.

2.Tight network security.

3.Wider bandwidths and higher bitrates.

4.Entirely packet-switched network.

5.Global mobility and service portability.

6.Support for previous wireless technologies.

7.High internet speed.

4G Networks & BandwidthThe 4G network will encompass all systems from various networks, public to private; operator-drivenbroadband networks to personal areas; and ad hoc networks.

The 4G systems will interoperate with 2Gand 3G systems, as well as with digital (broadband) broadcasting systems. In addition, 4G systems will befully IP-based wireless Internet.

4G Networks & Bandwidth

4G systems will use a bandwidth of up to 20 MHz, i.e. the channel offersfour times more bandwidth than channels of current systems.

most 4G systems will be scalable, for example in steps of 1.25 MHz. It can therefore beexpected that 4G channel sizes will range from 5 to 20 MHz.

Wi-Max World Interoperability for Microwave

Access There are two main applications of

WiMAX:

1) Fixed WiMAX (IEEE 802.16-2004) - Fixed WiMAX applications are point-to-multipoint enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL for homes and businesses.

2) Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e-2005) - Mobile WiMAX offers the full mobility of cellular networks at true broadband speeds.

3G vs. 4GLess Complexity, Faster Transmission

Unlike the 3G networks which are a combination of circuit switched and packet switched networks, 4G will be based on packet switching only. This will allow low-latency data transmission.

Wi-MAX / Wi-Fi Comparison

Wi-MAX and Wi-Fi are somewhat independent, addressing slightly different needs.

Wi-MAX uses private, licensed spectrum and provides Wi-Fi-like service with guaranteed performance to larger public areas, similar in coverage to cellular networks today.

Wi-Fi uses shared spectrum and operates at short distances, making it ideal for low-cost, private networks (where usage of the network is constrained to an office building or campus) or free public systems (where service guarantees are not required).

Interoperability between the signaling techniques that are planned for use in 4G.

Cost is another factor that could hamper the progress of 4G

technology. The equipment required to implement the next-generation network are still very expensive.

A Key challenge facing development of 4G technologies is how to make the network architectures compatible with each other. This was one of the unmet goals of 3G.

As regards the operating area, rural areas and many buildings in metropolitan areas are not being served well by existing wireless networks.

Limitation of 4G

4G in IndiaIn India, BSNL has launched India's first 4G service 4G WIMAX Broadband Services In Kochi Kerala on 4th June 2011.

Bharti Airtel launched India's first 4G service, using TD-LTE technology, in Kolkata on April 10, 2012.

It must be noted that Airtel's 4G network does not support mainstream 4G phones [73] such as Apple iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S III, Nokia Lumia 920 and others.
