Power Quality mainly deals with the affect of harmonics in the electrical distribution system.

Harmonics: It surfaced as a buzzword in the early 1980s, making many people reconsider the effectiveness of their building's wiring system. Yet, many still view the concept as a relatively new phenomenon. However, harmonics have been around since well before the early '80s: The associated problems existed in the electrical world way back when transistor tubes were first used in the 1930s. Aside from grounding, many deem harmonics as one of the greatest concerns for the power quality industry today.

Harmonic currents can cause overheating of distribution system equipment.

Harmonic currents are caused by any electrical equipment that used SMPS.

Distribution system loading by non-linear equipment can cause older dry type transformers to overheat if not derated.

Lighting accounts for 55% of all electrical power used. An estimated 90% of that power is controlled by some type of switching mode power supply (SMPS). That means that 50% of all power used can have harmonic currents overloading transformers, capacitors and other components on the distribution system.

Harmonic distortion can cause poor power factor, transformer and distribution equipment overheating, random breaker tripping, or even sensitive equipment failure. Since harmonics affect the overall power distribution system, the power utility may even levy heavy fines when a facility is affecting the utilities’ ability to efficiently supply power to all of its customers.

Variable Speed Drives (also known as Variable Frequency Drives) are prolific creators of harmonics in electrical systems and as a result, most of the harmonic mitigation effort focuses on the input side and output side of a VFD.UPS system also generates considerable amount of harmonics.
