Definitions
PONs :passive optical networks are really not passive !!
Why called passive ??-no electronics to power components that’s mean :no amplifiers ,rectifiers and of course no batteries .
PONs advantages
shared infrastructure translates to lower cost per customer
minimal number of optical transceiverspassive splitters translate to lower costcan be installed anywhereno power neededfiber data-rates can be upgraded as
technology improves
PONs Elements
Passive Power Coupler/Splitter: Number of input/output ports and the power is split in different ratios.
Star Coupler: Splits the incoming power into number of outputs in a star network
Add/Drop Bus Coupler: Add or drop light wave to/from an optical bus
All Optical Switch: Divert the incoming light wave into a particular output
PONs Topology
PONs topology is shown in next figure ,in which fiber can be forked out to multiple sites with the use of splitters .
This approach saves a lot of money by multiplexing many user payloads on few fibers than in conventional point to point topology .
PONs employs ATM to give efficient bandwidth management .
PONs
Ethernet PONs
The use of Ethernet and PON technology in the local loop reduces the cost of providing high capacity links to the customer
The reason is that the expensive components such as SONET ADM ,and ATM switches can be eliminated ,and replaced with less expensive components as shown in figure
Point to point topology used in Ethernet PON and as we learned can be split into multiple fibers with splitter .
Conventional ATM/SONET and PON configurations
Metro Optical Networking
Metro network deployed fiber in a distribution plant.
Its extensive operation , administration and maintenance (OAM) capabilities make it an effective technology for the service providers
The most common approach topology for metro optical network is to employ RINGs
