Basic capacitor construction adheres to plate-dielectric-plate structure- a positively charge anode, a negatively charged cathode, separated by a dielectric. The anode of a tantalum capacitor is a porous pellet of Ta metal. The dielectric is tantalum pentoxide. The cathode is a semiconductor material- either MnO2 or an intrisically conductive polymer. The benefit of the tantalum pellet lies in its porosity and the enormous amount of surface area present within this pellet structure. As shown in this schematic this SA is coated with the Ta2O5, which is in turn coated with the semiconductor. The external surfaces of the Ta pellet are also coated with Ta2O5 and semiconductor. A metal filled layer provides a highly conductive encapsulating layer for the capacitor. A carbon layer serves to chemically isolate the semiconductor from the metal filed layer. A surface mount capacitor is plastic typically encapsulated in a manner that provides for very consistent dimensions and smooth, flat surfaces for high speed pick-and-place solder operations.
