• It is a convenient, fast, efficient, reliable, modern, user friendly, comfortable and affordable mode of urban transport.

• It is safe and eco-friendly.

• It is electric and requires only 1/5th energy per passenger km compared to road based transport systems.

• Brings about a more equitable allocation of road space by encouraging greater use of public transport.

History of metro Rail

THE world's first metro, now the world's oldest system, is the London Underground in England, which is more commonly known as the Tube, which was opened in 1863.

THE world's longest metro system is the Shanghai Metro in China which is 434 kilometers long.

THE metro system with the most number of stations in the world is the New York City Subway in U.S.A, with four hundred and twenty two stations.

THE country with the highest number of metro systems in the world is the USA with subway systems situated in at thirty two cities.

Reasons behind Present Traffic Condition of

Dhaka City The minimum road requirement for a standard city is 25% whereas Dhaka city has only 7.5% roads.

Large numbers of trucks and buses.

EPZ (Export Processing Zone) area near the Dhaka city.

Thousands of outnumbered rickshaws.

Thousands of hawkers here and there.

Insufficient walkways.

Not enough spaces to build wide roads.

Most common problem is increasing numbers of populations.

Dhaka Metro rail Project Financing:oTransport sector has received around Tk 28,700 crore which is 23.8% of the total development budget for the FY2015-16.

o Tk 22,000 crore allocated for the metro rail project

oJapan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has confirmed they will provide Tk 16,600 crore of the project's total cost while Bangladesh government will bear the rest.

A train with six air-conditioned coaches will operate every four minutes travel from Uttara to Motijheel in just 38 minutes

A total of 24 such trains would carry 60,000 passengers every hour to both directions.

The metro rail will have stations at 16 points of the city.

Fast and affordable transport system.

Can carry a lot of passengers at the same time.

Passengers don’t have to face any kind of traffic jam.

Specific stations for exit and entrance.

Disadvantages of Dhaka Metro Rail project

The route isn’t changeable.

Sometimes the trains can become overcrowded.

A huge investments is required.

May require a huge govt. subsidy.

Will be available for specific locations.

Conclusion Finally, we can say, any development of a country is not possible without developing its transport sector.

Although it needs a huge amount of money, Bangladesh Govt. has taken truly an impressive step.
